Maternal chocolate and sucrose soft drink intake induces hepatic steatosis in rat offspring associated with altered lipid gene expression profile.

AIM: According to the World Diabetes Foundation, there is an urgent need to investigate the impact of maternal health and nutrition during pregnancy to understand the background for the accelerating incidence of obesity and type 2 diabetes. In this study, we specifically concentrated on the role of overfeeding during different developmental periods. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats were offered chow or high-fat/high-sucrose diet (chow plus chocolate and soft drink) during gestation and lactation. At birth, offspring were randomly cross-fostered within each dietary group into small and normal litt

Cardiovascular risk factors are reduced with a low dose of acarbose in obese patients with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is defined by menstrual irregularity, hyperandrogenism, chronic anovulation, and enlarged ovaries with multiple follicles. Polycystic ovary syndrome is highly prevalent in women, affecting up to 10% of all women of reproductive age and reducing the possibility of spontaneous conception. In addition to altering reproductive function, PCOS has systemic implications, especially in the cardiovascular system. Cardiovascular risk (CVR) in PCOS patient increases because of insulin resistance, elevated androgen levels, and association with obesity. Those alterations pr

The biochemical, clinical, and genetic features of type III hyperlipoproteinemia.

The clinical and biochemical features of type III hyperlipoproteinemia are described in 49 patients from 23 to 70 years of age. An increase in very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) of abnormal chemical composition was the basis for diagnosis. The untreated patients all had hypercholesterolemia and hyperglyceridemia, and, on the average, decreased concentrations of both low- and high-density lipoproteins. Seventy-four percent had xanthomas, and classic "xanthoma striata palmaris" was found in more than half. Twenty-seven percent had ischemic heart disease, detected earlier in men than in women.

Effect of Furocyst on Lipid Profile and Insulin Resistance Across Different Categories of Body Mass Index in Women With Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).

Introduction Insulin resistance is a fundamental factor in the pathogenesis of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and has been found to mediate a close association with obesity and dyslipidemia. While the anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory properties of fenugreek seed extracts have been demonstrated, research on its anti-hyperlipidemic properties is still in its novice stage, with inconclusive evidence. The present study assessed the impact of fenugreek seed extracts rich in furostanolic saponins (Furocyst) on lipid profiles across different categories of body mass index (BMI) in women with P

The role of postprandial very-low-density lipoprotein in the development of atrial remodeling in metabolic syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Negatively charged very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL-χ) in metabolic syndrome (MetS) patients exerts cytotoxic effects on endothelial cells and atrial myocytes. Atrial cardiomyopathy, manifested by atrial remodeling with a dilated diameter, contributes to atrial fibrillation pathogenesis and predicts atrial fibrillation development. The correlation of VLDL-χ with atrial remodeling is unknown. This study investigated the association between VLDL-χ and remodeling of left atrium. METHODS: Consecutively, 87 MetS and 80 non-MetS individuals between 23 and 74 years old (50.6% men) with

Unveiling biomarkers via plasma metabolome profiling for diabetic macrovascular and microvascular complications.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysregulation plays a crucial role in the development of diabetic vascular complications. Current models for diabetic vascular complications predominantly rely on three conventional parameter classes: demographic characteristics, clinical measures, and standard laboratory indices. In contrast, the potential prognostic value of the plasma metabolome remains substantially under characterized in this context. This study aims to systemically reframe the value of circulating metabolites, providing new insights into both assessment and pathophysiology of diabetic complications.

Pramipexole mitigates rotenone-evoked hepatic injury by regulating inflammatory, antioxidant, apoptosis and NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis.

The environmental chemical rotenone, which is employed as a natural insecticide, is hazardous to many organs. Thus, this study aimed to elucidate the protective efficacy of an oral administration of pramipexole (PPX) at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg/d against rotenone-induced hepatocellular damage for 60 days. Rotenone administration caused significant hepatic dysfunction, as evidenced by elevated serum AST, ALT, GGT, and bilirubin levels, along with reduced total protein and albumin, indicating impaired liver function. PPX co-administration markedly attenuated these changes, restoring liver enzyme acti

Cholesterol-Ester Transfer Protein Alters M1 and M2 Macrophage Polarization and Worsens Experimental Elastase-Induced Pulmonary Emphysema.

Cholesterol-ester transfer protein (CETP) plays a role in atherosclerosis, the inflammatory response to endotoxemia and in experimental and human sepsis. Functional alterations in lipoprotein (LP) metabolism and immune cell populations, including macrophages, occur during sepsis and may be related to comorbidities such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Macrophages are significantly associated with pulmonary emphysema, and depending on the microenvironment, might exhibit an M1 or M2 phenotype. Macrophages derived from the peritoneum and bone marrow reveal CETP that contributes to

Particle number analysis of lipoprotein subclasses by gel permeation HPLC in patients with cholesteryl ester transfer protein deficiency.

OBJECTIVE: We previously reported that patients with cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) deficiency (CETP-D) have a higher prevalence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, in spite of increased HDL-C levels. However, characterization of HDL in CETP-D has not been well described. Therefore, we examined HDL particle number (PN) rather than HDL-C level. APPROACH AND RESULTS: Nine patients with CETP-D and 9 normolipidemic subjects were enrolled. We performed gel permeation high-performance liquid chromatography (GP-HPLC) analysis, determined the cholesterol and triglyceride composition
