Congenital single-sided deafness (SSD) leads to an aural preference syndrome that is characterized by overrepresentation of the hearing ear in the auditory system. Cochlear implantation (CI) of the deaf ear is an effective treatment for SSD. However, the newly introduced auditory input in congenital SSD often does not reach expectations in late-implanted CI recipients with respect to binaural hearing and speech perception. In a previous study, a reduction of the interaural time difference (ITD) sensitivity has been shown in unilaterally congenitally deaf cats (uCDCs). In the present study, we …

Cochlear implant (CI) provision is the most effective clinical treatment to restore hearing performance in individuals with profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). It has been successful in providing improved speech perception outcomes, especially in quiet environments. However, speech perception performance within complex environments, lexical tone recognition, and music perception have been shown to only improve with newer fine structure coding strategies or related techniques. Therefore, the methods used to assess hearing performance in noisy environments, lexical tone recognition, and

INTRODUCTION: Cogan's syndrome is a rare form of vasculitis mainly affecting young subjects of whatever gender, associating cochleovestibular and ophthalmological damage. Despite medical treatment, auditory prognosis is uncertain, with 50-60% of patients showing irreversible severe to profound hearing loss, thus being candidates for cochlear implantation. Following CARE guidelines, we report 10 cases of cochlear implantation in Cogan's syndrome, with assessment of speech reception threshold and maximum intelligibility after a minimum 1 year's experience with the implant.

OBJECTIVE: Congenitally deaf children with a cochlear implant (CI) improve their speech production intelligibility, but their prosody, including stress and intonation produced by voice pitch and loudness changes, often differs from normal hearing people, which affects their fluent oral communication. This study is aimed to clarify abnormal characteristics of voice pitch and loudness control in CI recipients using a newly developed visually guided pitch change task.
METHODS: We included 13 normal hearing volunteers (NH group) and 17 congenitally deaf CI users who showed good speech intelligibi

IMPORTANCE: Research has suggested that early cochlear implantation is associated with improved language outcomes. Select studies demonstrate that this translates into a higher quality of life following implantation. Previous work from our group has shown that underinsurance represents a risk factor for worsened auditory and language outcomes for implantees. However, to our knowledge, the effect of insurance status on quality of life outcomes following cochlear implantation has not been evaluated.
OBJECTIVE: To assess quality of life outcomes for children receiving cochlear implants, accounti…

Cochlear implantation as an approved clinical therapy ushered in an exciting era of innovation for the treatment of hearing loss. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of cochlear implants as a treatment option for adults with profound sensorineural hearing loss in 1985. The landscape for treating adults and children with significant hearing loss has changed dramatically over the last three decades. The purpose of this paper is to examine the evolving regulatory process and changes to clinical care. A significant emerging trend in cochlear implantation is the consideration of …

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Children and adults with unilateral or asymmetric hearing loss (UHL/AHL) have poorer spatial hearing (e.g. speech understanding in complex maskers and localization) and quality of life compared with peers with normal hearing bilaterally. Patients with UHL/AHL experience limited benefits with contralateral-routing technologies (e.g. bone conduction, CROS hearing aid systems). Cochlear implantation allows for stimulation of the auditory pathway for the poorer hearing ear. The present study reviews the recent literature on outcomes of cochlear implant use for recipients with UH…

BACKGROUND: It is well established that biallelic mutations in transmembrane protease, serine 3 (TMPRSS3) cause hearing loss. Currently, there is controversy regarding the audiological outcomes after cochlear implantation (CI) for TMPRSS3-associated hearing loss. This controversy creates confusion among healthcare providers regarding the best treatment options for individuals with TMPRSS3-related hearing loss.
METHODS: A literature review was performed to identify all published cases of patients with TMPRSS3-associated hearing loss who received a CI. CI outcomes of this cohort were compared w…
