High mortality in a commercial turkey flock associated with coinfection by Pasteurella multocida and Mycoplasmoides (Mycoplasma) gallisepticum.

Six 11-wk-old, commercial, Broad-Breasted White, meat turkeys were submitted to the Turlock branch of the California Animal Health & Food Sa … nd classified as profile HhaI 0001, strain X-73, by restriction enzyme analysis DNA fingerprinting. Coinfection with P. multocida and MG in a susceptible flock resulted in rapid elevation of mortality and significant economic losses in this commercial meat turkey operation.

Case report: A rare case of skin abscess caused by coinfection of Actinobaculum schaalii and Actinomyces turicensis.

Skin abscess is one of the most common infections of the skin and soft tissues. However, anaerobic bacteria are infrequently identified as the causative agents of this particular form of abscess. In this case, a 34-year-old pregnant woman was diagnosed with a skin abscess with the use of ultrasonography. The microbiological analysis results of the purulent fluid revealed the coinfection of Actinobaculum schaalii and Actinomyces turicensis. The patient was first treated empirically with 3 days of cefathiamidine, which resulted in no symptom improvement. Subsequently, a surgical procedure involv…

Esophagitis in a Post-Liver Transplant Patient: A Case of Cytomegalovirus and Herpes Simplex Virus-1 Coinfection.

In post-liver transplant patients, esophagitis presents a diagnostic and management challenge due to the potential for opportunistic infecti … ogies such as cytomegalovirus (CMV) and herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1). The biopsy confirmed a rare coinfection of CMV and HSV-1, which was characterized histologically by viral cytopathic effects and immunohistochemical staining. Treatment with valganciclovir and temporary cessation of mycophenolate led to symptom resolution and viral clearance. Follow-up EG …

Coinfection of Hepatitis B and C Viruses and Risk of Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis B and C are viral infections causing chronic liver inflammation and, when left untreated, lead to cirrhosis and a risk for hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common type of primary liver cancer with high mortality. The hepatitis B virus-hepatitis C virus (HBV-HCV) coinfection leads to a faster progression to advanced liver diseases and higher hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk than monoinfection. Unlike the relative risk for HCC due to either HBV or HCV, no recent analysis of the risk for HBV-HCV coinfection exists. METHODS: Based on PRISMA recommendations and guideli…

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) Coinfection and Diffuse Interstitial Lymphocytosis Presenting With Kidney Disease.

This case report highlights a rare presentation of acute kidney injury (AKI) with nephrotic syndrome in a Pacific Islander with concomitant acute HIV and hepatitis B virus (HBV) coinfection, progressing to require hemodialysis; the patient recovered completely and discontinued dialysis after a course of high-dose steroids and initiation of antiviral agents. The renal biopsy revealed features consistent with HIV-associated nephropathy (HIVAN) and HBV-associated nephropathy (HBVAN), along with diffuse interstitial lymphocytosis (DIL) showing dominant CD8 lymphocyte infiltration and high Hep B an…

WNV and SLEV coinfection in avian and mosquito hosts: impact on viremia, antibody responses, and vector competence.

West Nile virus (WNV) and St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) are closely related flaviviruses that can cause encephalitis in humans and related diseases in animals. In nature, both are transmitted by Culex, with wild birds, including jays, sparrows, and robins, serving as vertebrate hosts. WNV and SLEV circulate in the same environments and have recently caused concurrent disease outbreaks in humans. The extent that coinfection of mosquitoes or birds may alter transmission dynamics, however, is not well characterized. We therefore sought to determine if coinfection alters infection kinetics a…

Expression profiling & functional characterization of candidate miRNAs in serum exosomes among Indians with & without HIV-tuberculosis coinfection.

Background & objectives Despite the evidence of population differences in miRNA expression, limited information is available about the expression profile of miRNAs in Indian tuberculosis (TB) patients. The present study aimed to investigate the expression profile of candidate serum exosomal microRNAs in Indian patients with and without HIV-TB coinfection. Methods The pool samples of serum exosomes of study participants (HIV-TB coinfection, extra-pulmonary TB, HIV mono-infection, pulmonary TB) and healthy humans were processed for the isolation of total RNA followed by miRNA analysis using miRC…

Acute cholangitis caused by coinfection with zoonotic pathogens of Gallibacterium anatis and Enterococcus cecorum: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Gallibacterium anatis and Enterococcus cecorum are considered to be emerging infectious pathogens in poultry, particularly in the European Union. These bacteria are isolated on rare occasions from immunocompromised hosts and cause opportunistic infections associated with the ingestion of contaminated food. Here, we report the first case of G. anatis and E. cecorum coinfection in an immunocompetent host and clarify the genomic characteristics of these bacteria. CASE PRESENTATION: A 78-year-old Japanese man diagnosed with acute cholangitis as a result of a common bile duct stone was…

Coinfection with porcine epidemic diarrhea virus and Clostridium perfringens type A enhances disease severity in weaned pigs.

Clostridium perfringens is a constituent of the normal gut microbiome in pigs; however, it can potentially cause pre- and post-weaning diarr … ype A (CPA; 64/203, 31.5%). Among the CPA infections, single infections with CPA (30/64, 46.9%) and coinfections with CPA and PEDV (29/64, 45.3%) were the most common in diarrheal samples. Furthermore, we conducted animal experiments to investigate the clinical outcome of single infections and coinfections with highly pathogenic (HP)-PEDV and CPA in weaned pi …

Procalcitonin and C-reactive protein to rule out early bacterial coinfection in COVID-19 critically ill patients.

PURPOSE: Although the prevalence of community-acquired respiratory bacterial coinfection upon hospital admission in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been reported to be < 5%, almost three-quarters of patients received antibiotics. We aim to investigate whether procalcitonin (PCT) or C-reactive protein (CRP) upon admission could be helpful biomarkers to identify bacterial coinfection among patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. METHODS: We carried out a multicentre, observational cohort study including consecutive COVID-19 patients admitted to 55 Spanish intensive care units (I…

Coinfection of Clonorchis sinensis and hepatitis B virus: clinical liver indices and interaction in hepatic cell models.

BACKGROUND: In China, people infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV) are commonly found in areas with a high prevalence of Clonorchis sinensis, a trematode worm. Published studies have reported that the progression of hepatitis B is affected by coinfection C. sinensis. METHODS: Clinical data from a total of 72 patients with C. sinensis and HBV (as sole infection or with coinfections) and 29 healthy individuals were analysed. We also incubated the hepatic stellate cell line LX-2 with total proteins from C. sinensis adult worms (CsTPs) and HBV-positive sera. In addition, the human hepatoblastoma …

Infection History and Current Coinfection With Schistosoma mansoni Decreases Plasmodium Species Intensities in Preschool Children in Uganda.

Malaria-schistosomiasis coinfections are common in sub-Saharan Africa but studies present equivocal results regarding the interspecific relationships between these parasites. Through mixed-model analyses of a dataset of Ugandan preschool children, we explore how current coinfection and prior infection with either Schistosoma mansoni or Plasmodium species alter subsequent Plasmodium intensity, Plasmodium risk, and S mansoni risk. Coinfection and prior infections with S mansoni were associated with reduced Plasmodium intensity, moderated by prior Plasmodium infections, wealth, and host age. Futu…
