Oral uracil and tegafur plus Leucovorin(UFT/LV)therapy is one of the standard adjuvant chemotherapies for colorectal cancer, and is widely used without any serious adverse events. Herein, we describe a case of UFT/LV-induced acute liver failure in a 75-year-old woman who underwent laparoscopic sigmoidectomy for sigmoid colon cancer. She was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer and lymph node metastasis by postoperative histopathological analysis, and adjuvant chemotherapy was initiated. After 30 days of commencing the therapy, the patient visited our hospital with complaints of severe diarrhea

Large bowel perforation is an acute abdominal emergency requiring rapid diagnosis for proper treatment. The high mortality rate associated with large bowel perforation underlines the importance of an accurate and timely diagnosis. Computed tomography is useful for diagnosis of ingested foreign bodies, and endoscopic repair using clips can be an effective treatment of colon perforations. We herein describe a 78-year-old man with sigmoid colon perforation caused by accidental swallowing of a jujube pit. The jujube pit had become stuck in the wall of the sigmoid colon and was successfully removed

BACKGROUND: Patients with locally advanced sigmoid colon cancer (LASCC) have limited treatment options and a dismal prognosis with poor quality of life. This retrospective study aimed to further evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NACRT) followed by surgery as treatment for select patients with unresectable LASCC.
METHODS: We studied patients with unresectable LASCC who received NACRT between November 2010 and April 2019. The NACRT regimen consisted of intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) of 50 Gy to the gross tumor and positive lymphoma node and 45 Gy t

PURPOSE: Colonoscopic detorsion (CD) is the first treatment option for uncomplicated sigmoid volvulus (SV). We aim to examine the factors affecting the failure of CD.
METHODS: The files of patients, treated after diagnosis of SV between January 2015 and September 2020, were retrospectively reviewed. Patients' demographic data, comorbidities, endoscopy reports, and surgical and other treatments were recorded. Patients were divided into two groups, as the successful CD group and unsuccessful CD group. The data were compared between the groups, and multivariate analysis of statistically signific

BACKGROUND: Persistent descending mesocolon (PDM) is a congenital anomaly associated with the failure of fixation of the descending colon to the lateral abdominal wall. In the laparoscopic colectomy for colorectal cancer, it has been noticed that there are extensive adhesions and a distinctive anatomy of colonic vessels in cases with PDM. Therefore, it is necessary to have sufficient knowledge about PDM so that it can be appropriately treated during surgery.
CASE PRESENTATION: Case 1-a 79-year-old man underwent laparoscopic intersphincteric resection for rectal cancer. Preoperative barium ene

OBJECTIVE: Cystectomy with urinary diversion is the gold standard for muscle invasive bladder cancer. It also may be performed as part of pelvic exenteration for non-urologic malignancy, neurogenic bladder dysfunction, and chronic conditions that result in a non-functional bladder (e.g., interstitial cystitis, radiation cystitis). Our objective is to describe the surgical technique of urinary diversion using large intestine as a conduit whilst creating an end colostomy, thereby avoiding a primary bowel anastomosis and to show its applicability with respect to urologic conditions.

BACKGROUND: Intra-abdominal desmoid tumors are rare and generally occur in some patients with familial adenomatous polyposis or secondary to an external stimulus such as surgical trauma. We report herein a case of intra-abdominal desmoid tumor in the jejunal mesentery after laparoscopic colectomy for sigmoid colon cancer.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 74-year-old woman underwent laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy for colon cancer with pathological stage I. Follow-up computed tomography (CT) 18 months after primary surgery showed a nodular and enhanced soft tissue density mass, 20 mm in size, in the mesent

The incidence of internal hernias is rare (0.2-0.9%). The prevalence of intestinal obstruction for an internal hernia is low (0.5-5%), however if strangulation is present the overall mortality is higher than 50%. There are multiple places where an internal hernia may be localized, with transmesenteric: transmesocolic (8%) and transomental (1-4%) as the rarest. We report a series of two cases (men with 40 years-old and women with 92 years old) of volvulus of colon sigmoid in a strangulated transverse and descendent transmesocolic hernia, with one case associated also to a transomental hernia. PURPOSE: To compare the diagnostic performance of MRI and CT for local staging of sigmoid and descending colon cancer, with pathological results as the reference standard.
METHOD: This retrospective study included 116 patients with sigmoid or descending colon cancer who underwent both MRI and CT before surgery. MRI and CT images were separately reviewed by two independent and blinded radiologists to assess the following features: T-stage, presence of extramural extension (T3-4 disease), lymph node metastases (N+), and extramural vascular invasion (EMVI+). Diagnostic performance with sensitivi

OBJECTIVES: Colonic diverticular disease is widespread in Western countries and its associated with aging. In Japan, diverticulitis and colovesical fistula are also occurring more frequently. Colonic resection for diverticula-related fistulas is frequently technically demanding because of associated acute or chronic inflammation. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of a standardized laparoscopic procedure.
METHODS: Data from 39 consecutive patients who had undergone laparoscopic surgery for colovesical fistula between October 2006 and August 2017 were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: The

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare condition resulting from mucin-producing tumors that have disseminated into intraperitoneal implants and mucinous ascites. The extra-abdominal spread of PMP is exceptionally rare, with few reported cases in the medical literature. Pseudomyxoma pleurii is an infrequently encountered clinical syndrome characterized by transdiaphragmatic pleural extension and spread of PMP. The disease is highly fatal. We hereby report a case of 58 years old woman who presented with an abdominal distension and shortness of breath of 2 months duration. Histopathology confirme

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced complication occurs in two phases: acute and chronic toxicities. Bowel perforation is regarded as a chronic toxicity associated with injury to vascular and connective tissue. It is usually noted a few months to several years after radiation treatment (RT).
CASE: Herein, we present a case of sigmoid colon perforation relatively early after completion of RT. A 70-year-old woman was treated with laparoscopic radical hysterectomy and postoperative hypofractionated intensity-modulated RT for clinical stage IB1 cervical cancer. RT was delivered with a total dose 4000 c

A 45-years-old man presented discharge of abscess from the umbilicus with lower abdominal pain. CT scan showed huge tumor from the bladder to the umbilical part with sigmoid colon invasion. He was diagnosed as urachal carcinoma, which was confirmed by pathological examination. We started FOLFOX chemotherapy according to advanced colon cancer. Approximately 80% of reduction was accomplished after 11 courses of FOLFOX. We performed radical cystectomy with sigmoid colon resection. Pathological examination revealed complete resection with negative surgical margin. No recurrence and metastasis were

An 86-year-old man was brought in ambulance to our hospital because of sudden hematochezia and abdominal pain during defecation. Intestinal prolapse approximately 80mm from the anus and a type 1 tumor 50mm in size on the mucosal surface were detected. The intestinal prolapse was manually repositioned, and the reduction of the intussusception was confirmed by computed tomography (CT). Following colonoscopy and abdominal-enhanced CT, a sigmoid colon cancer without distant metastases was detected. Elective laparoscopic radical surgery was performed. The present study described a rare case of sigm
