BACKGROUND: Gaelic football is a national sport of Ireland. While predominantly played in Ireland, it is recognized in North America, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Australasia. Its high-velocity, multidirectional, and high physical contact elements expose players to a risk of injury. To date, prospective injury data for Gaelic football has been of short duration.
PURPOSE: To describe the incidence and nature of sport-related injuries in elite male Gaelic football players over 4 consecutive seasons.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study.
METHODS: Over the period 2007 to 2010, a tota

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy and the transition to parenthood are major adjustment periods within a family. Existing studies have asked parents, retrospectively, about their experience of antenatal education, mainly focusing on women. We sought to address this gap by asking first-time mothers and their partners about how they could be better supported during the antenatal period, particularly in relation to the transition to parenthood and parenting skills.
METHODS: Purposive sampling was used to recruit 24 nulliparous women with a range of ages from two healthcare organisations in South-West Englan

One of the most common infectious disease-related causes of death globally, particularly in low- and middle-income nations, persists: tuberculosis. At a manifestation of globalization, causes of death keep growing. As it happens, we have developed a sensor that quickly recognizes tuberculosis. The sensor operates in the (1-2 THz) frequency band, resulting in exemplary recognition and accuracy. Our present work asserts the design and numerical analysis of a hexagonal hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) sensor for detecting tuberculosis (TB) cells adopting the finite element method (FEM)

Closed fractures of distal radius and ulna are one of the most common skeletal injuries, occurring at all ages. Temporary arm immobilization through cast is part of the standard treatments. However, traditional casting procedures are time consuming, operator's skill dependent and do not always guarantee a satisfactory outcome. From a clinical perspective, casts are often considered uncomfortable and can be associated to skin lesions. To overcome these limitations, the recent growth of 3D technologies has enabled new standardized casting procedures: additive manufacturing (AM) is a technique th

BACKGROUND: Adjacent segment degeneration (ASD) is a common complication of lumbar interbody fusion; the paraspinal muscles significantly maintain spinal biomechanical stability. This study aims to investigate the biomechanical effects of proximal multifidus injury on adjacent segments during posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF).
METHODS: Data from a lumbosacral vertebral computed tomography scan of a healthy adult male volunteer were used to establish a normal lumbosacral vertebral finite element model and load the muscle force of the multifidus. A normal model, an L4/5 PLIF model (PFM)

AIM: Eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoE) is a rare, chronic, relapsing immune/antigen-mediated disease characterised by symptoms of oesophageal dysfunction, with a paucity of data among New Zealand (NZ) children. This 3-year prospective study aimed to characterise EoE diagnosed nationally and to describe initial treatment strategies adopted.
METHODS: Information on new diagnoses of paediatric EoE was obtained via the New Zealand Paediatric Surveillance Unit, through monthly questionnaires.
RESULTS: From February 2014 to January 2017, 73 new cases (74% male) of EoE were reported, including 74% NZ

BACKGROUND: There is growing interest in the area of "wearable tech" and its relationship to health. A common element of many of these devices is a triaxial accelerometer that can yield continuous information on gross motor activity levels; how such data might predict changes in health is less clear.
METHODS: We examined accelerometry data from 2,976 older men who were part of the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) study. Using a shape-naive technique, functional principal component analysis, we examined the patterns of motor activity over the course of 4-7 days and determined whether these

Skull fractures are common injuries in young children, typically caused by accidental falls and child abuse. The paucity of detailed biomechanical data from real-world trauma in children has hampered development of biomechanical thresholds for skull fracture in infants. The objectives of this study were to identify biomechanical metrics to predict skull fracture, determine threshold values associated with fracture, and develop skull fracture risk curves for low-height falls in infants. To achieve these objectives, we utilized an integrated approach consisting of case evaluation, anthropomorphi

CONTEXT/OBJECTIVE: Hyperandrogenism is a common feature of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and is considered a cardinal element for the diagnosis and phenotyping of this condition. Unfortunately, routinely available methods for measuring serum androgens suffer from major limitations. No data are available on the impact of androgen assay quality on the assignment of PCOS women to the different clinical phenotypes of PCOS, when defined according to the Rotterdam criteria for diagnosis.
PATIENTS: Two hundred four consecutive Caucasian women with PCOS, diagnosed by the Rotterdam crite

Constant drive provided to the human lumbar spinal cord by epidural electrical stimulation can cause local neural circuits to generate rhythmic motor outputs to lower limb muscles in people paralysed by spinal cord injury. Epidural spinal cord stimulation thus allows the study of spinal rhythm and pattern generating circuits without their configuration by volitional motor tasks or task-specific peripheral feedback. To reveal spinal locomotor control principles, we studied the repertoire of rhythmic patterns that can be generated by the functionally isolated human lumbar spinal cord, detected a

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a common complication observed in diabetic patients, which can lead to lower limb amputation in severe cases and seriously impair the patient's mobility and even endanger life. Plantar insoles aim to redistribute pressure, yet diabetic foot tissues exhibit altered material properties, necessitating a novel approach to address vertical pressures and shear forces. This study sought to design a three-dimensional anisotropic heel cushioning pad that mitigates both vertical pressure and anteroposterior/mediolateral (AP/ML) shear forces.

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review study.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the effect of osteoporosis on spine instrumentation.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Osteoporosis is a common skeletal pathology that affects systemic cortical bone maintenance and remodeling. This disease accelerates the degeneration of the spine, often necessitating spinal surgery for progressive vertebral deformity, pathologic fracture, bony canal stenosis, and/or neural element decompression. There is a paucity of literature describing the role of osteoporosis as it relates to both perioperative complications

Interferon regulatory factor 6 ( IRF6) acts as a tumor suppressor and controls cell differentiation in ectodermal and craniofacial tissues by regulating expression of target genes. Haploinsufficiency of IRF6 causes Van der Woude and popliteal pterygium syndrome, 2 syndromic forms of cleft lip and palate. Around 85% of patients with Van der Woude express pits on the lower lip that continuously or intermittently drain saliva, and patients with the common cleft lip and palate have a higher prevalence of dental caries and gingivitis. This study aims to identify the role of IRF6 in development of e

MOTIVATION: Long arrays of near-identical tandem repeats are a common feature of centromeric and subtelomeric regions in complex genomes. These sequences present a source of repeat structure diversity that is commonly ignored by standard genomic tools. Unlike reads shorter than the underlying repeat structure that rely on indirect inference methods, e.g. assembly, long reads allow direct inference of satellite higher order repeat structure. To automate characterization of local centromeric tandem repeat sequence variation we have designed Alpha-CENTAURI (ALPHA satellite CENTromeric AUtomated R

Eight mononuclear chromium(III), manganese(II), iron(III), cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), zinc(II) and cadmium(II) complexes of Schiff's base ligand were synthesized and determined by different physical techniques. The complexes are insoluble in common organic solvents but soluble in DMF and DMSO. The measured molar conductance values in DMSO indicate that the complexes are non-electrolytic in nature. All the eight metal complexes have been fully characterized with the help of elemental analyses, molecular weights, molar conductance values, magnetic moments and spectroscopic data. The ana

BACKGROUND: Recent data demonstrate that the incidence of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NETs) has increased exponentially (overall ~500%) over the last three decades, thus refuting the erroneous concept of rarity. GEP-NETs comprise 2% of all malignancies and in terms of prevalence, are the second commonest gastrointestinal malignancy after colorectal cancer. Diagnosis is usually late since there is no biochemical screening test and symptoms are protean and overlooked. As a consequence, 60-80% exhibit metastases with a consequent suboptimal outcome.
DISCUSSION: The gastroin

The oncogenic role of VAV1, a GTPase guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) with cytoplasmic and nuclear localizations, has been previously reported in multiple malignancies. Most of the mechanisms underlying this pro-tumoral activity have been linked to the cytoplasmic expression of this GEF. To date, the contribution of nuclear VAV1 to cancer development remains poorly understood. Here, using models of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDAC), the most common subtype of pancreatic cancer, we provide evidence of a novel mechanism driving oncogenic gene expression in PDAC cells that is regul

Despite progress in improving outcomes for oligoarticular and polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), the field still faces considerable challenges. More than half of adults who have had JIA continue to have active disease and have developed functional limitations. Medication side effects are common and intrusive. Thus, the field continues to search for therapeutic agents that target specific aspects of disease pathobiology and will be accompanied by fewer and less intrusive side effects. We identified 28 candidate target genes that were associated with JIA according to Open Targets

INTRODUCTION: Hallux valgus, a common foot deformity, often necessitates surgical intervention. This study evaluates the biomechanical alterations in patients post-surgery, focusing on the efficacy of an "8" bandage fixation system to promote optimal recovery.
METHODS: A three-dimensional (3D) model was constructed using CT data from a patient with hallux valgus. A quasi-static finite element analysis (FEA) was conducted in conjunction with gait analysis to evaluate the biomechanical changes at the osteotomy site under "8" shaped bandage fixation following hallux valgus surgery. The effects o
