Although a growing body of evidence underscores the contributions of community-based participatory research, community coalitions and other community engagement approaches to addressing health equity, one of the most potent forms of engagement-community organizing-has attracted far less attention in our field. Yet, organizing by and for communities, to build power, select issues, develop and use strategies, and take action to address the goals they collectively have set, may offer important lessons for public health professionals in these fraught times. We share, largely in their own words, th

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) remains a significant post-surgical complication of breast cancer treatment. Immediate lymphatic reconstruction (ILR) at the time of axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) has shown promise in preventing BCRL. While the primary literature supporting ILR comes from academic institutions, the majority of breast cancer care in the USA occurs in the community setting. This study evaluated a preventative lymphedema program performing ILR at a community health system.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective database including all patients who underwent

OBJECTIVE: To examine the 30-day risk of hospitalization with hyponatremia associated with carbamazepine, valproic acid (V), phenytoin (P), or topiramate (T) use compared to nonuse in the outpatient setting among older adults.
METHODS: We conducted two population-based, retrospective cohort studies in Ontario, Canada, between 2003 and 2015 using administrative health care databases of older adults. The first study compared carbamazepine users to a propensity-score matched group of antiepileptic drug nonusers, whereas the second compared V-P-T users to a propensity-score matched group of antie

BACKGROUND: In developing countries, there are few comprehensive studies of mortality following stroke.
AIMS AND/OR HYPOTHESIS: We aimed to determine the one-year case fatality rate following stroke and to identify factors associated with death in a population-based stroke incidence study in Iran.
METHODS: Six hundred eighty-four patients who had suffered a stroke between November 21, 2006, and November 20, 2007, and were recruited to the Mashhad Stroke Incidence Study were followed up at one-year. Most patients were seen in an outpatient visit. When patients had died, a verbal autopsy was c

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of meralgia paresthetica (MP) and its relationship to diabetes mellitus (DM) and obesity.
METHODS: A population-based study was performed within Olmstead County Minnesota, from January 1, 1990, to December 31, 1999. MP incidence and its association with age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and DM were reviewed.
RESULTS: A total of 262 patients with MP, 262 normal controls, and 262 BMI-matched normal controls with mean age of 50 years were identified (51% men). The age- and sex-adjusted incidence of MP was 32.6 per 100,000 patient years, whereas the incide

Bioterrorism preparedness is clearly a goal for the health care community, working in concert with city, county, state, and federal public health and emergency authorities and in collaboration with law enforcement at the local and federal levels. Opening the channels of communication between all groups involved, obtaining the necessary resources, and maintaining an understanding of the potential agents and the diseases they cause will foster a smooth transition to a rational program directed at patient, personnel, and community safety.

Data from surveys conducted by The Alan Guttmacher Institute (AGI) in 1981 have been used to create three indicators of the effectiveness of family planning clinics in serving teenagers: the mean delay between first intercourse and first clinic visit (which for teenage clinic patients is 13.2 months); teenage patient retention (67 percent; and the average excess of patient satisfaction over dissatisfaction with clinic policies and services (33 percent). Clinics run by Planned Parenthood are more effective than other types of facility, according to the mean delay indicator, whereas other clinic

BACKGROUND: Skin cancer rates continue to rise in underserved populations, particularly among Hispanics who often present with later-stage diagnoses. While photoprotective practices and regular skin examinations can mitigate risks, barriers such as limited dermatologist access and insufficient awareness persist. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a community-based educational intervention in improving skin cancer awareness and prevention behaviors in an underserved U.S.-Mexico border community. METHODS: We conducted a community-based educational intervention combining bilingual

The sixth update of the Canadian Stroke Best Practice Recommendations for Transitions and Community Participation following Stroke is a comprehensive set of evidence-based guidelines addressing issues faced by people following an acute stroke event. Establishing a coordinated and seamless system of care that supports progress achieved during the initial recovery stages throughout the transition to the community is more essential than ever as the medical complexity of people with stroke is also on the rise. All members of the health-care team engaged with people with stroke, their families, and

The Ebola virus disease outbreak that began in Western Africa in December 2013 was unprecedented in both scope and spread, and the global response was slower and less coherent than was optimal given the scale and pace of the epidemic. Past experience with limited localized outbreaks, lack of licensed medical countermeasures, reluctance by first responders to direct scarce resources to clinical research, community resistance to outside interventions, and lack of local infrastructure were among the factors delaying clinical research during the outbreak. Despite these hurdles, the global health c

BACKGROUND: Gender-affirming care (GAC) improves the mental health, quality of life, and social functioning of gender-diverse patients. In spite of this, GAC in the United States (as elsewhere) has become a major focus of debate, with several federal policy changes enacted through Executive Orders and legislation creating major restrictions on transgender (trans) Americans' ability to obtain the care they need.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to understand how trans Americans are responding to the anticipated changes in their access to GAC and to provide healthcare professionals with strategies to suppor

With extreme weather events growing in severity and frequency, interventions aimed at preventing associated health disorders in coastal communities have become salient. Coastal communities are expected to develop coping mechanisms to climate change related stressors. However, these frontline communities may need special assistance to effectively adapt to unprecedented climatic disasters. Existing infrastructure and policy support systems may be inadequate, resulting in residual vulnerabilities that require attention. We examine whether tropical cyclones inflict adverse mental health impacts on

BACKGROUND: End-of-life (EoL) care is the final phase of life (typically the last year when death is imminent), distinct from but related to palliative care, which provides broader support for serious illness. In many low- and middle-income countries, including Bangladesh, end-of-life care remains underdeveloped. Cultural norms, socio-economic disparities, limited palliative care infrastructure, and lack of healthcare provider training further complicate informed decision-making at EoL. This study aimed to evaluate EoL care awareness, preferences, and decision-making factors among critically i

India is the first country in the world to implement a family planning program, and this program has succeeded in generating universal knowledge about family planning methods. In spite of this, there exists a wide gap between knowledge and acceptance of family planning methods reflecting an unmet need for contraception. Different communication channels used to disseminate knowledge like television, radio, and newspapers aim to change the family planning methods. Being a didactic method, these have the least potential to change the attitudes of the people. This article represents the tip of the

Family planning is often regarded as the woman's responsibility, but there is growing recognition of the need to involve men in family planning programs. Since 2001, the fertility-awareness-based Standard Days Method® (SDM) has been introduced in more than 30 countries, providing a natural, effective birth control option. SDM requires the cooperation of the male partner, and its introduction created an opportunity to test innovative strategies to engage couples in family planning. Such strategies included couple counselling, outreach activities that encouraged men to participate in family plan
