Cell size explains shift in phytoplankton community structure following storm-induced changes in light and nutrients.

Understanding the mechanisms driving community structure and dynamics is crucial in the face of escalating climate change, including increasing incidences of extreme weather. Cell size is a master trait of small organisms that is subject to a trade-off between resistance to grazing and competition for resources, and thus holds potential to explain and predict community dynamics in response to disturbances. Here, we aimed at determining whether cell size can explain shifts in phytoplankton communities following changes in nutrient and light conditions resulting from storm-induced inputs of nutr

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder resources for educators: A scoping review.

Children with foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) can experience neurodevelopmental, physical, psychological and behavioural impairments that can result in a disrupted school experience. However, educators often have limited knowledge or experience in the identification and support of students with FASD, and there is a critical need for effective tools and resources to ensure students with FASD are supported in their ongoing learning and development. This scoping review aimed to identify and evaluate publicly available educator resources that aid in the identification, and support of stude

Harmonizing ALS research data across multimodal data sets using the OMOP Common Data Model.

Three nonprofit organizations-ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI), Answer ALS, and the Critical Path Institute (C-Path)-collaborated to harmonize distinct ALS research datasets using the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) Common Data Model (CDM). This effort was designed to make otherwise separate ALS resources more comparable, enabling larger and more informative cross-cohort analyses. The teams coordinated vocabulary mapping, identified OMOP vocabulary gaps, and submitted new concepts to the Observational Health Data Science and Informatics (OHDSI) community for approv

Frailty, loneliness and social isolation in older adults: a holistic approach for district nursing.

This article explores frailty and its links to loneliness and social isolation among older adults and the key role of district nurses in community-based early identification and management. Frailty, often linked with loneliness and social isolation, increases the risk of hospitalisation and adverse outcomes. Current assessment tools, such as the Rockwood Clinical Frailty Scale, may inadequately address the multidimensional nature of frailty. The author suggests combining the Edmonton Frailty Scale with the University of California, Los Angeles Loneliness Scale for a more holistic approach, alo

Barriers to Patient Referral and Completion of CAR T-Cell Therapy for Relapsed/Refractory Large B-Cell Lymphoma.

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy has improved outcomes for patients with hematologic malignancies such as relapsed or refractory large B-cell lymphoma. However, research indicates that a substantial proportion of medically eligible patients with relapsed or refractory large B-cell lymphoma in the United States do not receive CAR T-cell therapy. Multiple barriers across the treatment pathway contribute to the significant gap between patient eligibility and receiving treatment. To further examine these barriers, a multistakeholder panel was convened on October 8, 2025. Key barriers

Factors Explaining State Differences in Applying for a Recent Long-Term Care Program that Promotes Aging in Place: Perspectives of Medicaid Administrators.

Older adults in need of assistance often prefer to remain at home rather than receive care in an institution. To meet these preferences, Medicaid invited states to apply for the Balancing Incentive Program (BIP), a program intended to "rebalance" Medicaid-financed long-term services and supports to Home- and Community-Based Services (HCBS). However, only about half of eligible states applied. We interviewed Medicaid administrators to explore why some states applied for BIP whereas others did not. Supportive state leadership and the presence of other programs supporting community-based care wer

Affording Housing at the Expense of Health: Exploring the Housing and Neighborhood Strategies of Poor Families.

Low-income families often simultaneously encounter housing and neighborhood problems pertaining to safety, affordability, and quality issues that necessitate strategies to maximize limited budgets and ensure safety. Such constrained decisions regarding inadequate housing and poor neighborhood conditions, however, may themselves create or exacerbate health risks. Building on the survival strategies literature, this article offers rich and detailed accounts of coping and management strategies on the part of vulnerable families facing housing and neighborhood hardships. The findings are based on

Translating Life Course Theory to clinical practice to address health disparities.

Life Course Theory (LCT) is a framework that explains health and disease across populations and over time and in a powerful way, conceptualizes health and health disparities to guide improvements. It suggests a need to change priorities and paradigms in our healthcare delivery system. In "Rethinking Maternal and Child Health: The Life Course Model as an Organizing Framework," Fine and Kotelchuck identify three areas of rethinking that have relevance to clinical care: (1) recognition of context and the "whole-person, whole-family, whole-community systems approach;" (2) longitudinal approach wit

Helping homeless individuals with co-occurring disorders: the four components.

Homeless individuals with co-occurring disorders (CODs) of severe mental illness and substance use disorder are one of the most vulnerable populations. This article provides practitioners with a framework and strategies for helping this client population. Four components emerged from a literature review: (1) ensuring an effective transition for individuals with CODs from an institution (such as a hospital, foster care, prison, or residential program) into the community, a particularly important component for clients who were previously homeless, impoverished, or at risk of homelessness; (2) in

The burden of stroke in Pakistan.

Epidemiologic literature on stroke burden, patterns of stroke is almost non existent from Pakistan. However, several hospital-based case series on the subject are available, mainly published in local medical journals. Despite the fact that true stroke incidence and prevalence of stroke in Pakistan is not known, the burden is assumed to be high because of highly prevalent stroke risk factors (hypertension, diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease, dyslipidemia and smoking) in the community. High burden of these conventional stroke risk factors is further compounded by lack of awareness, poor
