Novel neurodigital interface reduces motion sickness in virtual reality.

Virtual reality (VR) is a computer-created 3D environment with a focus on realistic scenes and pictures created for entertainment, medical and/or educational and training purposes. One of the major side effects of VR immersion reported in the scientific literature, media and social media is Visually Induced Motion Sickness (VIMS), with clinical symptoms such as disorientation, nausea, and oculomotor discomfort. VIMS is mostly caused by the discrepancy between the visual and vestibular systems and can lead to dizziness, nausea, and disorientation. In this study, we present one potential novel s

Neuropsychiatric involvement in juvenile-onset systemic lupus erythematosus: A multicenter study.

INTRODUCTION: Neuropsychiatric (NP) involvement is a restricted area in juvenile-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (jSLE). AIM: To investi … volvement (13.5%). The most common NPSLE findings were headache (50.3%), seizure (38.3%), and acute confusional state (33.6%). Five clusters were identified with all clinical and laboratory findings. The first two clusters involved neuropathies, demyelinating diseases, aseptic meningitis, and movement disorder. Cluster 3 involved headache, activity markers …

Clinical Reasoning: A 40-Year-Old Woman Presenting With Encephalopathy and Paraparesis.

Patients with acute to subacute multifocal neurologic abnormalities often have a unique presentation, and their diagnosis and management can be challenging. We present the case of a 40-year-old patient who presented with a 4-day history of confusion, bradyphrenia, right facial droop, bilateral lower limb weakness, urinary incontinence, and hypothermia. This case highlights the diagnostic approach to patients with subacute multifocal neurologic abnormalities, the importance of considering coexisting systemic illnesses in the diagnosis, and their management. Readers will explore the diagnostic s…

Older Adult Woman in a Coma After Acute Laryngitis.

A 72-year-old woman with a history of adenocarcinoma of the lung, for which she was receiving tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy with osimert … tion. Clinically, there were no signs of meningitis. No sedative medications that would explain her confusion were given except for low-dose opioid analgesics. On day 4 after hospitalization, she was transferred to the shock room for immediate stabilization and diagnostics because of profound encephalopathy and increasing oxygen requirements.

[Psychiatric disorders in palliative care and at the end of life].

Patients confronted to advanced organic diseases at a palliative stage can present psychological distress that might announce the occurrence of genuine psychiatric disorders. Some frequent and comprehensible symptoms such as sadness, mild agitation, anxiety or more disturbing such as hallucinations, delusions or suicidal ideations must alert the clinician who should not minimize them by attributing them in a reactive way to the consequences of the evolution of physical disease or treatment's side effects. Literature data regarding psychiatric disorders (mainly anxiety disorders, delirium and d

Cryptococcal meningitis and confusional psychosis. A case report and literature review.

A previously healthy and immuno-competent 22-year-old man presented in confusional psychosis. Cryptococcal meningitis was later found to be the underlying cause as proven by culturing Cryptococcus neoformans serotype A from the cerebrospinal fluid. Combined antifungal therapy with amphotericin B and 5-fluorocytosine resulted in sustained improvement of all mental and physical functions. Cryptococcosis has rarely been reported from the Middle East. This represents the second case from Kuwait.

[Malignant angioendotheliomatosis associated with an acute confusional syndrome: a case report and review of the literature].

We present a case of malignant angioendotheliomatosis (MAE) localized at the central nervous system (CNS) in a 74-years-old male, manifested as an acute confusional syndrome with fever, characteristics of lymphocytic meningitis in the cephalorhachidian liquid (CRL) and dilatation of the left lateral ventricle according to the cranial computerized tomography (CT). The diagnosis was established using post-mortem immunohistological techniques, concluding that it was an intravascular lymphomatous process with secretion of immunoglobulins.

[Confusional states following administration of short-acting benzodiazepines (midazolam/triazolam)].

The authors report about six patients, who after the intake of Midazolam or Triazolam suffered from an oneiroid-confusional state in which they carried out complex acts and for which an anterograde amnesia existed. In addition to these drugs, one female patient was under the influence of alcohol and one male patient of Bromazepam. Two of the patients suffered of emotional conflicts. The possibility of disinhibition of suicide and other impulses is named. The authors recommend caution in prescribing these benzodiazepines of ultrashort action.

Encephalitis caused by Coxiella burnetii.

Acute infection with Coxiella burnetii usually results in a self-limited illness, but it can occasionally cause chronic endocarditis or hepatitis. Headache is a common presenting symptom of acute infection with this agent, but specific neurological abnormalities are rare. We report the case of a patient with acute Q fever that caused frank encephalitis. We also review the literature on central nervous system disease attributable to C. burnetii.

Spatial Disorientation Event During Flight Due to Proposed Reverse-Dip Visual Illusion.

BACKGROUND: Spatial disorientation is a leading nontechnical cause of fatal military aviation accidents, triggered by insufficient or misleading cues mainly from the visual and vestibular systems. Spatial disorientation accounts for 20-38% of fatal military aviation accidents, but case reports describing specific illusions during actual flight are rare. CASE REPORT: On a clear night, an aerial refueling tanker was cruising at 16,000 ft (4877 m), while an F-15I fighter aircraft was 3 mi behind and 971 ft (296 m) below. About 100 s before a near collision, the fighter pilot switched to Air-to-A

A neural circuit for spatial orientation derived from brain lesions.

There is disagreement regarding the major components of the brain network supporting spatial cognition. To address this issue, we applied a lesion mapping approach to the clinical phenomenon of topographical disorientation. Topographical disorientation is the inability to maintain accurate knowledge about the physical environment and use it for navigation. A review of published topographical disorientation cases identified 65 different lesion sites. Our lesion mapping analysis yielded a topographical disorientation brain map encompassing the classic regions of the navigation network: medial pa

Quantifying effectiveness and best practices for bumblebee identification from photographs.

Understanding pollinator networks requires species level data on pollinators. New photographic approaches to identification provide avenues to data collection that reduce impacts on declining bumblebee species, but limited research has addressed their accuracy. Using blind identification of 1418 photographed bees, of which 561 had paired specimens, we assessed identification and agreement across 20 bumblebee species netted in Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota by people with minimal training. An expert identified 92.4% of bees from photographs, whereas 98.2% of bees were identified from s

Predicting Subjective Discomfort Associated With Lens Distortion in VR Headsets During Vestibulo-Ocular Response to VR Scenes.

With advances in Virtual Reality (VR) technology, user expectation for a near-perfect experience is also increasing. The push for a wider field-of-view can increase the challenges of correcting lens distortion. Past studies on imperfect VR experiences have focused on motion sickness provoked by vection-inducing VR stimuli and discomfort due to mismatches in accommodation and binocular convergence. Disorientation and discomfort due to unintended optical flow induced by lens distortion, referred to as dynamic distortion (DD), has, to date, received little attention. This study examines and model

Distinct clinical symptom patterns in patients hospitalised with COVID-19 in an analysis of 59,011 patients in the ISARIC-4C study.

However, it i … gh, and dyspnoea, which co-occurred with additional symptoms in three further patterns: fatigue and confusion, diarrhoea and vomiting, or productive cough. Presentations with a single reported symptom of dyspnoea or confusion were also identified, alongside a sub-phenotype of patients reporting few or no symptoms. Patients presenting with gastrointestinal s …
