Effect of on-farm poultry litter composting processes on physicochemical, biological, and toxicological parameters and reduction of antibiotics and antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli.

Poultry litter is a valuable source of nutrients for crop production, but its use in agriculture can lead to environmental and public health concerns due to the presence of pollutants, antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs). We compared the effect of different on-farm poultry litter composting processes on physicochemical, biological, and toxicological parameters, as well as on the occurrence of antibiotics and resistant Escherichia coli. The composting treatments consisted of passively-aerated piles C:N = 19 (PAC19), mechanically-aerated piles C:N = 19 (MAC1…

Synthesis and Pesticidal Activity of New Niacinamide Derivatives Containing a Flexible, Chiral Chain.

Natural products are a source for pesticide or drug discovery. In order to discover lead compounds with high fungicidal or herbicidal activity, new niacinamide derivatives derived from the natural product niacinamide, containing chiral flexible chains, were designed and synthesized. Their structures were confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS analysis. The fungicidal and herbicidal activities of these compounds were tested. The fungicidal activity results demonstrated that the compound (S)-2-(2-chloronicotinamido)propyl-2-methylbenzoate (3i) exhibited good fungicidal activity (92.3% inhibition)

The nitrogen cycle.

Nitrogen is the fourth most abundant element in cellular biomass, and it comprises the majority of Earth's atmosphere. The interchange between inert dinitrogen gas (N2) in the extant atmosphere and 'reactive nitrogen' (those nitrogen compounds that support, or are products of, cellular metabolism and growth) is entirely controlled by microbial activities. This was not the case, however, in the primordial atmosphere, when abiotic reactions likely played a significant role in the inter-transformation of nitrogen oxides. Although such abiotic reactions are still important, the extant nitrogen cyc

Cranberry Fruit Rot Revisited: Advances, Challenges, and Future Directions.

Cranberry fruit rot (CFR) has constrained commercial cranberry production since the mid-1800s and remains among the most economically significant diseases affecting the crop. Historically viewed as a disease caused by a limited number of fungal pathogens, CFR is now recognized as a complex, multiscale pathosystem involving diverse fungal taxa, latent infections, host developmental stage, and environmentally driven disease expression. Approximately 12-15 fungal species have been associated with the fruit rot complex, although the ecological roles, infection biology, and relative contributions o

Gender roles in ruminant disease management in Uganda: Implications for the control of peste des petits ruminants and Rift Valley fever.

There is a distinct division of tasks and roles between men and women in livestock management in the different ruminant production systems in Uganda. Division of roles can influence disease control and prevention. This qualitative study asks what men and women do to prevent or control diseases that affect them and their livestock and what factors influence the choice of disease control measures taken. Discussants represented three production systems (pastoral, agro-pastoral, and mixed crop livestock), selected for the high prevalence of two livestock diseases (peste des petits ruminants and Ri

Effective biofertilizer Trichoderma spp. isolates with enzymatic activity and metabolites enhancing plant growth.

Trichoderma species have been widely recognized as biofertilizer fungi for their ability to produce phytohormones and enhance plant growth. In our current study, fifteen strains of Trichoderma spp. (T1-T15) were screened for their capacity to produce phytohormones and metabolites eliciting plant growth. The stains were previously isolated from olive rhizosphere soil in northern Algeria. Plant growth promoting (PGP) potential of Trichoderma spp. was evaluated in vitro through the production of phosphatases, siderophores, hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and ammonia (NH3). Besides, plant growth phytohorm

Evaluation of breeding objectives, breeding practices and reproductive performance of indigenous dairy cows in selected districts of Kaffa Zone, South West Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Breeding objectives are designed to achieve targeted dairy cow production goals, which can be affected by production type, farmer preferences, environmental factors and genetic factors individually or in combination. Breeding practices, such as both controlled and uncontrolled, and artificial insemination (AI) are the tools used to obtain the desired breeding objectives. The lower reproductive performance of indigenous dairy cows affects the total milk production and calf crops that are produced during their lifetime. Designing appropriate breeding objectives and breeding practices

Rethinking control strategies for plant-parasitic nematodes.

To improve management for plant-parasitic nematodes, new solutions must reflect biological realities and be guided by coherent, science-based regulations. This study addresses five areas: (1) regulatory and market hurdles that slow adaptation of biological control products despite strong safety records and scalable production; (2) microbiome-mediated soil resilience, including nematode-microbiome interactions, suppressive consortia, validated delivery systems, and diagnostics to shift soils toward durable suppression; (3) effective containment for nematodes of regulatory concern, and precise r

The spinosyns, spinosad, spinetoram, and synthetic spinosyn mimics - discovery, exploration, and evolution of a natural product chemistry and the impact of computational tools.

Natural products (NPs) have long been a source of insecticidal crop protection products. Like many macrolide NPs, the spinosyns originated from a soil inhibiting microorganism (Saccharopolyspora spinosa). More than 20 years after initial registration, the spinosyns remain a unique class of NP-based insect control products that presently encompass two insecticidal active ingredients, spinosad, a naturally occurring mixture of spinosyns, and spinetoram, a semi-synthetic spinosyn product. The exploration and exploitation of the spinosyns has, unusually, been tied to an array of computational tool

Multi-Stage Transcriptomics Reveals TF- and lncRNA-Mediated Regulatory Networks Governing Glyphosate Resistance in Cyperus rotundus.

Glyphosate resistance in Cyperus rotundus, a globally invasive weed, is increasingly threatening crop production, yet its molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we performed multi-stage RNA sequencing of tubers from glyphosate-resistant and -susceptible populations across three developmental stages to investigate the transcriptional dynamics underlying resistance. Differential expression analysis revealed extensive stage-specific transcriptional reprogramming, with the strongest divergence at the III developmental stage. Integrating constitutive and stage-dependent expression patterns iden…

Cyclo(Val-Pro), a Potential Plant Immunomodulator, Confers Rice Blast Resistance via Circadian-Clock-Modulated Immune Activation and Metabolic Reprogramming.

Rice blast, caused by Magnaporthe oryzae, is a devastating disease threatening global rice production, with current control strategies facing resistance and environmental risks. Small bioactive peptides have emerged as promising eco-friendly plant immunomodulators with low resistance risk for sustainable crop disease control. Here, we identified cyclic dipeptide cyclo(Val-Pro) as a potential plant immunomodulator with no direct fungicidal activity, which effectively conferred robust rice resistance to M. oryzae via promoting host intrinsic defense responses. Pre-treatment with cyclo(Val-Pro) a

A Comparative Transcriptomic Analysis of X-Ray Irradiation Responses Identifies Candidate Biomarker Genes in Bactrocera dorsalis Larvae.

Bactrocera dorsalis (Diptera: Tephritidae) ranks among the most serious quarantine pests threatening global fruit and crop production. Irradiation has been adopted worldwide as an eco-friendly phytosanitary treatment strategy, yet how B. dorsalis responds to irradiation is not fully understood. To investigate the transcriptional response to irradiation, third-instar B. dorsalis larvae were exposed to two X-ray doses: a sub-effective dose of 15 Gy and a phytosanitary dose of 120 Gy. Comparative transcriptomic profiling revealed a clear dose-dependent escalation in the number of differentially e…

Harnessing algal biology for engineering photosynthesis and metabolism in plants.

Photosynthesis underpins global food production and energy conversion across the biosphere and remains a central target for improving biological and agricultural productivity. Previous methods to improve photosynthetic efficiency in land plants include enhancing carbon fixation, bypassing photorespiration, and optimizing Rubisco efficiency; however, recent advances in algal biology reveal alternative strategies. Here, we review three key traits of algal biology with translational potential for plant biotechnology: chlorophyll c-based light-harvesting systems, pyrenoid-associated carbon-concent

Site-Specific Measurement of Meiotic Crossing-Over Rate with Droplet Digital PCR.

Understanding the frequency and distribution of meiotic crossovers (COs) is critical for both fundamental studies on meiosis and for practical applications in plant breeding, where controlling recombination can accelerate crop improvement. Determining CO rates at specific genomic loci has traditionally relied on labor-intensive methods that require the production and genotyping of large progenies. Here, we present a high-throughput protocol for site-specific quantification of meiotic COs in maize using droplet digital PCR (ddPCR). The method is based on genotyping individual pollen nuclei from

Four sequential filters constrain the efficacy of spray-induced gene silencing against fungal pathogens.

Fungal pathogens remain a major constraint on crop production, while resistance and residue concerns increasingly limit reliance on conventional fungicides. Spray-induced gene silencing (SIGS), an RNA interference (RNAi)-based approach, offers a non-transgenic and sequence-specific strategy for controlling fungal diseases. Although laboratory studies increasingly report effective gene silencing and disease suppression, these results have not consistently translated into reliable protection under field-relevant conditions. In this review, we examine this gap through four sequential filters: env…

Systematic Investigation of the Biocontrol Potential of Bacillus velezensis B05 against Soybean Root Rot Pathogen Fusarium spp.

Soybean is an important global crop, but its production is often limited by root rot, which causes severe yield and quality losses. In this study, a potent antagonistic bacterium, Bacillus velezensis B05, was isolated from the rhizosphere of healthy soybean plants. Genome analysis identified eight biosynthetic gene clusters, including bacilysin and macrolide H, as well as 34 carbohydrate-active enzymes, suggesting its biocontrol potential. Metabolomic analysis detected 621 metabolites, and KEGG enrichment results were consistent with the genomic predictions. The cell-free supernatant of B05 si
