Since swine influenza virus was first isolated in 1930, it has become endemic in pigs worldwide. Although large amount of swine influenza vaccines has been used in swine industry, swine influenza still cannot be efficiently controlled and has been an important economic disease for swine industry. The high diversity and varied distribution of different subtypes and genotypes of swine influenza viruses circulating in pigs globally is a major challenge to produce broadly effective vaccines and control disease. Importantly, swine influenza virus is able to cross species barrier to infect humans an

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruption in everyone's lives globally. Optometrists, being primary health care professionals are at a higher risk of infection in their practices during these testing times. Optometrists and optical store owners need practically implementable guidelines as lockdown gets lifted in various parts of our country. As these practices gear up to provide eye examination and vision correction to people, they need to take necessary precautions to avoid any cross contaminations. Optometry Council of India guidelines were circulated among optometry and optical associatio

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with accelerated bone loss, partly mediated by dysregulation of the receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB (RANK)/RANK ligand (RANKL)/osteoprotegerin (OPG) pathway, which regulates osteoclast activity. Carboxy-terminal cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX-1) is a biochemical marker of bone resorption and may reflect increased skeletal turnover in RA. Although previous studies have evaluated RANKL, OPG, and the RANKL/OPG ratio in relation to bone mineral density, osteoporosis, and fracture risk, the correlations of circulating RANK, RANKL, an

OBJECTIVES: Circulating growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) concentrations increase with age and are elevated in chronic diseases, but evidence regarding habitual wake after sleep onset (WASO) and circulating GDF-15 remains limited. We therefore examined the cross-sectional association between plasma GDF-15 and wearable-estimated WASO in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
DESIGN: Cross-sectional biomarker analysis of first-year data from a prospective community-based cohort.
SETTING: USUKI study, Usuki, Oita, Japan.
PARTICIPANTS: 118 community-dwelling adults aged ≥65

This study aimed to examine the association between sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and osteoporosis through a cross-sectional study and a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR). We used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2013-2014 and 2015-2016 data, with exposure as serum SHBG and outcome as osteoporosis and performed multivariate logistic regression to test the correlation between SHBG and osteoporosis. To determine the causal relationship between SHBG and osteoporosis, a two-sample bidirectional MR was employed. The genome-wide association stud

BACKGROUND: Effectiveness of seasonal influenza vaccines mainly depends upon how well vaccine strains represent circulating viruses; mismatched strains can lead to reduced protection. Humans have complex influenza exposure histories that increase with age, which may lead to different postvaccination responses to emerging influenza variants. Recent observational studies also suggest that prior vaccination may influence the performance of current seasonal vaccines.
METHODS: To elucidate the effects of age and influenza preexposures on cross-reactivity of vaccination-induced human antibodies, we

The placenta is a fetal endocrine organ that secretes many neuroactive factors, including steroids, that play critical roles in brain development. The study of the placenta-brain axis and the links between placental function and brain development represents an emerging research area dubbed "neuroplacentology." The placenta drives many circulating fetal steroids to very high levels during gestation. Recent studies have highlighted the critical role of placental steroids in shaping specific brain structures and behaviors. This review uses a cross-species framework to discuss the genomic factors,

Influenza A viruses (IAVs) circulate among different species and have the potential to cause significant pandemics in humans. This study focuses on reassortment events in the H5N8 subtype of IAV, which poses a serious threat to public health due to its high pathogenicity in birds and potential for cross-species transmission. We retrieved 2359 H5N8 IAV sequences from GISAID, and filtered and analyzed 442 complete genomic sequences for reassortment events using pairwise distance deviation matrices (PDDMs) and pairwise distance correspondence plots (PDCPs). This detailed case study of specific H5

Advancing proteomic and metabolomic technologies that integrate curated omic databases have crossed a threshold to enable their clinical utility. In this issue of the JCI, Sharma et al. exploit emerging technologies to evaluate whether biomarkers identified in the mitochondrial encephalomyopathy lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome could refine disease characterization, uncover pathways to monitor therapeutic efficacy, and/or delineate disease-modifying targets. The authors analyzed blood and urine samples from patients with this genetic mitochondrial disease and elucidate

OBJECTIVE: In this study we aimed to evaluate whether there is a link between circulating 25-OH-D levels and molecular response in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).
MATERIAL AND METHOD: A total of 61 patients with CML (31 women, 30 men) were recruited in this cross-sectional study.
RESULTS: Binary logistic regression analysis demonstrated that increased vitamin D levels were independently associated with molecular response in subjects with CML.
CONCLUSION: Our results indicated for the first time in the literature that severe deficiency of vitamin D was independently associated with molecular

An effective HIV-1 vaccine should elicit sufficient breadth of immune recognition to protect against the genetically diverse forms of the circulating virus. Evaluation of the breadth and magnitude of cellular immune responses to epitope variants is important for HIV-1 vaccine assessment. We compared HIV-1 Gag-specific T-lymphocyte responses in 20 HIV-1-infected individuals representing two different HIV-1 subtypes, B and C. By assessing T lymphocyte responses with peptides based on natural HIV-1 variants, we found evidence for limited cross-reactivity and significantly enhanced within-clade re

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a pediatric hyperinflammatory disease manifesting 4-6 weeks after SARS-CoV-2 infection. While the immunological hallmarks of MIS-C have been defined, few details regarding the underlying disease pathology have been resolved. To address this, we used a multiomics approach to profile the plasma and peripheral immune cells of 13 acute MIS-C patients, 18 recovered MIS-C follow-ups resampled over multiple time points (1-18 months), and 15 healthy pediatric controls. Despite rapid clinical disease resolution, circulating pro-inflammatory (IL-8

INTRODUCTION: Mosquito-borne infections are of global health concern because of their rapid spread and upsurge, which creates a risk for coinfections. DENV and ZIKV are transmitted by Aedes aegypti and A. albopictus and are prevalent in Nigeria and neighbouring countries. However, their seroprevalence, burden, hidden endemicity and possible cocirculation are poorly understood in Nigeria.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 871 participants from three regions of Nigeria. All serum samples were analysed using malaria RDT and the immunoblot molecular diagnostic assay recomLine Tropi

Extracellular arterial activity of the pro-inflammatory enzyme myeloperoxidase (MPO) destabilizes atherosclerotic plaque and associates with future atherothrombosis. To facilitate first-in-human studies using extracellular MPO activity as a molecular imaging target to identify high-risk atherosclerotic plaque, we describe [68Ga]Ga-IEMA, a NODAGA-based positron emission tomography (PET) radiotracer that provides an index for extracellular MPO activity. Synthesis of [68Ga]Ga-IEMA was achieved in five steps and with high radiolabelling efficiency. [68Ga]Ga-IEMA self-oligomerized and bound to prot
