Renal tubular acidosis and sensorineural deafness: an autosomal recessive syndrome.

This is the first known reported case of autosomal recessive syndrome of renal tubular acidosis and sensorineural deafness in the otorhinolaryngological literature. Ten cases in six families have been reported in the pediatric literature. Most cases manifested at birth or soon after with vomiting, dehydration, polydipsia, polyuria, hyposthenuria, and failure to thrive. Renal tubular acidosis is a clinical syndrome of disordered acidification out of proportion to the impairment of glomerular filtration, and is associated with alkaline urine. Sensorineural deafness is variable and, in most cases…

[Central deafness without aphasic disorders due to bilateral temporal lesion].

The authors report the case of a 68 years-old man with two strokes with an interval of 12 years in each hemisphere. In the last one, the patient presented total and persistent central deafness without any aphasic disorders, except verbal comprehension interference due to the deafness. During the first weeks he also had complex auditory hallucinations. Computerized tomography showed alterations suggesting old bilateral temporal lobe infarctions.

[Audiologic diagnosis of sensorineural deafness by discriminant analysis (author's transl)].

The audiometric test-battery surely is a help to the diagnosis of a lesion of the VIIIth nerve. The discriminant analysis is the most suitable statistic procedure for reduction of the test-battery and for clearer decision in cases of ambigous constellation of findings. The persons are divided into three groups: normals, patients with presumable inner-ear disturbance, and those with lesions of the acoustic nerve. By means of the classification-coefficients (a result of the discriminant analysis) in new cases a diagnosis per conclusionem can be found on-line.

[Protects stapedectomy from increasing otosclerotic inner ear deafness? (author's transl)].

The favourable influence--first shown by Shambaugh--of fenestration operation used in cases of the otosclerosis which cause a rapid sensorineural hearing loss can also be stated for stapedectomy. A negative influence of stapedectomy on inner ear stability was not determined. Especially the ears whose inner ear function is very bad were favoured by this operation.

Atypical ichthyosiform erythroderma and congenital neurosensory deafness--a distinct syndrome.

A patient has been studied in whom an atypical ichthyosiform erythroderma was associated with congenital neurosensory deafness, vascularization of the corneas progressing to blindness, alopecia totalis, abnormalities of the teeth and nails, and postnatal growth deficiency. Twelve other patients with a similar pattern of malformation have been reported previously. This syndrome appears to represent a distinct disorder with a pattern of inheritance which is most likely autosomal recessive.

Tomography of petrous bone in deafness associated with Paget's disease.

Two cases of Paget's disease presenting with deafness are described. Tomography of the petrous bones showed, in both cases, an upward tilt of the long axes of the bones including their auditory canals, generalized sclerosis of the petrous pyramids and enlargement of the ossicles. In one case, there was narrowing of the internal auditory canal. Review of the literature revealed three radiological phases in Paget's disease of the temporal bone:--(i) early changes consisting mainly of demineralisation; (ii) an intermediate phase consisting of diminishing visibility of the semicircular canals and …

Management of conductive deafness of non-suppurative aetiology in Nigeria.

A review of 39 cases of deafness of non-suppurative aetiology seen in the Department of Otolaryngology of the University College Hospital, Ibadan between 1966 and 1971 is presented. Deafness of this type is not as common as deafness of suppurative origin but it presents problems of its own. First there is the inability of many patients to give accurate histories and describe actual sensation in the ear. Secondly, there is the problem created by patients not turning up for regular follow up. Thirdly, there is the problem of unavailability of necessary equipment such as that highlighted by the u…

[Some aspects of hereditary perceptive deafness and leukism (author's transl)].

A discussion of certain aspects of leukism and deafness as well as the possible relationship between the two, based on a study of the literature on cats, dogs, mink, mice and man. This is followed by some preliminary communications on personal studies in Dalmatians, Bull Terriers and Rottweilers. The paper concludes with some notions on genetic aspects.

[A case of reversible deafness in cystic arachnoiditis (author's transl)].

A patient studied preoperatively by a neuro-otological test battery showed signs of an extensive cerebellopontine angle tumour. During the operation dense fibrotic tissue was found extending from the choroid plexus to the right acoustic nerve, which was freed and thus decompressed. Postoperatively, low frequency hearing improved markedly in the right ear. In contrast to the well-known documented cases of successful decompression of the optic nerve it has not been possible up to now to achieve a successful outcome in similar procedures on the acoustic nerve. In the described case the fibrotic l
