Occupational Contact Dermatitis: An Update.

Occupation contact dermatitis (CD) is a common inflammatory skin condition impacting every professional industry in the United States. It is associated with significant personal and professional distress, loss of revenue, and decreased productivity. Occupational CD is further subdivided into irritant CD and allergic CD. Frequently, workers may suffer from a combination of both types. Numerous workplace exposures are implicated, but there are several themes across professions, such as CD related to frequent handwashing and wet work. A detailed occupational history, physical examination, and pat…

Current Concepts of Dermatitis Herpetiformis.

Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) is an autoimmune skin disease that causes itchy, blistering rash, typically on the elbows, knees and buttocks. DH and coeliac disease share the same genetic background, gluten-dependent enteropathy and antibody response against tissue transglutaminase. DH is currently considered a cutaneous manifestation of coeliac disease, and the prevailing hypothesis is that DH develops as a late manifestation of subclinical coeliac disease. The incidence of DH is decreasing contemporarily with the increasing incidence of coeliac disease. The IgA immune response in DH skin is d…

Food allergy and atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD), characterized by intense pruritus, eczematous lesions, and a relapsing disease course, is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that affects both children and adults. AD often begins in infancy and is associated with atopic diseases in the personal or family history.1 Environmental factors may trigger AD by affecting the skin barrier and by triggering inflammation. The elicitation of T-helper type 2 cytokines further impairs the epidermal barrier and leads to the penetration of irritants and allergens into the epidermis and thereby perpetuating inflammation. The presence …

Alcohol-Related Dermatitis: A Review.

: Wine, beer, liquor, and spirits are widely consumed in many cultures across the globe, and for some individuals, ingestion, cutaneous contact, or other exposure can lead to dermatologic findings. However, there currently exist no comprehensive reviews on alcohol-related dermatitis. Herein, we will provide an overview of alcohol-related dermatitis and contact urticaria, including the epidemiology and clinical manifestations, potential allergens found in alcoholic beverages, testing approaches, and strategies for allergen avoidance.

Atopic dermatitis in elderly adults.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) in adults over 45 years of age (AD≥45) has been poorly studied. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the AD phenotype varies according to the pattern of AD onset in AD≥45 patients and whether response to cyclosporine A (CsA) is influenced by age. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This monocentric retrospective study was performed in a French university department of dermatology. We included 409 AD<45 patients (111 treated with CsA) and 124 AD≥45 patients (26 treated with CsA). Among AD≥45 patients, 20% were categorised into Subgroup 1 (persistence of AD since childhood), …

[Vemurafenib-induced radiation recall dermatitis].

INTRODUCTION: Radiation recall dermatitis is an uncommon inflammatory reaction of the skin appearing after several days to several years at the site of previous irradiation; it is precipitated by the use of triggering drugs, although rarely by BRAF or MEK inhibitors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report an unusual case of recall dermatitis induced 3 months after initiation of vemurafenib and cobimetinib therapy. DISCUSSION: Radiation recall dermatitis is a cutaneous reaction that must be known and which in rare cases such as ours may occur a long time after the end of radiotherapy.

Ocular complications of atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that can present with ocular comorbidities. Ocular complications are more prevalent in individuals with AD compared to the general population and can cause notable morbidity. This article reviews the clinical presentation, pathophysiology, and management of common ocular complications associated with AD, including blepharitis, keratoconjunctivitis, keratoconus, glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachment, ophthalmic herpes simplex virus infections, and dupilumab-associated ocular complications. It is important for dermatologists to be…

Glove-Related Allergic Contact Dermatitis.

Hand dermatitis is a common condition with a lifetime prevalence of 20%. Glove allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a very important dermatitis affecting health care workers, hairdressers, cleaning personnel, kitchen workers, craftsmen, construction workers, laboratory workers, and homemakers. Occupationally related cases may be severe and can result in significant disability. Glove ACD is most commonly due to exposure to rubber accelerators, which are compounds that are added to rubber during production to increase strength and durability. Given the known allergic potential of these compounds…

Histopathological patterns in dermatitis artefacta.

BACKGROUND: Dermatitis artefacta is a relevant and frequently unrecognized clinical condition associated with self-harming behavior, in which unconscious manipulation causes skin lesions. While atypical lesions and an unusual disease course may give rise to clinical suspicion of a self-induced disorder, questioning and examining these patients usually fails to confirm or clarify this suspicion. In this setting, the dermatopathologist may be faced with the question whether there are any histological signs corroborating the diagnosis of dermatitis artefacta. METHODS: We conducted a Pubmed searc…

Contact dermatitis: a historical perspective.

Contact dermatitis is a common skin condition that can have a considerable impact on patient quality of life and function. Historically, contact dermatitis has played a significant role in the evolution of dermatology as the understanding of a relationship between environmental exposure and specific skin disease became more widely accepted. Reports about this relationship can be found throughout the history of humanity, thousands of years ago. The Egyptians were perhaps the first to document this relationship in ancient history, and documentation has also been found in several other cultures a…

Alkyl Glucosides in Contact Dermatitis.

Ecologically sound because they are synthesized from natural and renewable sources, the mild surfactants alkyl glucosides are being rediscovered by the cosmetic industry. They are currently found in rinse-off products such as shampoos, liquid cleansers, and shower gels, but also in leave-on products that include moisturizers, deodorants, and sunscreens. During the past 15 years, numerous cases of allergic contact dermatitis have been published, mostly to lauryl and decyl glucosides, and these compounds are considered emergent allergens. Interestingly, the sunscreen Tinosorb M contains decyl gl…
