[Allergy to ed-edta and formaldehyde (author's transl)].

1. Comparison of the ED/EDTA allergies as determined by epicutaneous testing from 1977-79 with the test results from 1980. An increase in the sensitization indices for ED as well as for EDTA is evident. 2. Additional information concerning the occurrence of ED/EDTA. 3. EDTA and formaldehyde allergy. 4. A self-report questionnaire to detect hand dermatitis in nurses.

BACKGROUND: Hand dermatitis is highly prevalent among nurses due to their frequent exposure to wet work. Providing cost-effective dermatological health surveillance for this occupational group presents a challenge to health service providers. AIMS: To ascertain the predictive value of nurses' self-assessment of whether they had current hand dermatitis using a screening questionnaire when compared with the assessment made by a dermatologist of the nurses' hand photographs. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study comparing the self-report decision made by student and intensive care nurse

Allergy to cocamide DEA.

Three cases are reported of individuals allergic to cocamide DEA, also known as coconut diethanolamide. In two cases, multiple other cutaneous allergies were present. In both instances, cocamide DEA was present in several personal care products used by the patients. In the third case, occupational exposure was suspected. Cocamide DEA is an unusual allergen that may cause contact dermatitis in individuals who often have multiple other skin allergies.

[Gaillardia allergy].

Allergic contact dermatitis of the face and hands occurring in a 37-year-old savings-bank employee was found to be due to non-occupational handling of Gaillardia cultivars. Additional self treatment with a body lotion containing extracts of Arnica worsened the skin lesions. Epicutaneous tests with different Gaillardia sesquiterpene lactones revealed spathulin to be the responsible sensitizer. Cross reactions were obtained with telekin, alantolactone, parthenolide, isoalantolactone and carabrone.

Acrylate-induced allergic contact dermatitis in a car windscreen repairer.

We report a case of an allergic skin reaction to ultraviolet-cured acrylates in a windscreen repair worker. The patient presented with a 6 month history of fingertip dryness, vesicles and desquamation. He had worked as a self-employed car windscreen repairer for 19 years. Previous management with vinyl glove protection and treatment with clobetasol propionate ointment had produced little improvement. He was patch tested to the British Society for Cutaneous Allergy standard and preservatives series and to the two acrylates used in his work environment, identified using safety data sheets, methy

Contact dermatitis from Larrea (creosote bush).

Six men suffering from acute dermatitis had positive patch tests to Larrea (creosote bush). The lesions preferentially involved sun-exposed sites, simulating a photodermatitis, but also were on the legs and scrotum. Our findings were more consistent with contact allergy than with a primary irritant or a phototoxic response. The patch tests were also positive to Zuccagnia punctata. In two cases the exposure to the creosote bush occurred as a result of casual occupations, in two because of household remedies (moist compresses and baths), and in the other two as a result of burning the bush and r

Prevalence of Contact Allergy to Propolis-Testing With Different Propolis Patch Test Materials.

INTRODUCTION: Propolis is a sticky substance produced by honeybees from plant resins collected from locally growing vegetation. Its chemical composition varies depending on the plant species visited by the bees. Contact dermatitis is commonly reported following exposure to cosmetics containing propolis or following the intake of food supplements. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence of contact allergy to propolis in two dermatology clinics in Europe. METHODS: From February to July 2023, consecutive adult dermatitis patients were patch tested in the Department of Dermatology in Genova, I

European Surveillance System on Contact Allergies (ESSCA): Characteristics of patients patch tested and diagnosed with irritant contact dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) is caused by the acute locally toxic effect of a strong irritant, or the cumulative exposure to various weaker physical and/or chemical irritants. OBJECTIVES: To describe the characteristics of patients with ICD in the population patch tested in the European Surveillance System on Contact Allergies (ESSCA; www.essca-dc.org) database. METHODS: Data collected by the ESSCA in consecutively patch-tested patients from January 2009 to December 2018 were analyzed. RESULTS: Of the 68 072 patients, 8702 were diagnosed with ICD (without concomitant allerg

Contact dermatitis and patch testing for the allergist.

OBJECTIVE: To review of contact dermatitis (CD) and its key allergens and provide updates and recommendations for the practicing allergist. DATA SOURCES: Through the use of various scientific search engines (eg, PubMed and MEDLINE), we reviewed literature on CD, patch tests (PTs), key allergens, occupational dermatitis, and treatment. STUDY SELECTIONS: Studies on CD, important allergens, and PTs were considered. RESULTS: Contact-induced dermatitis may be due to allergic CD, irritant CD, systemic CD, contact urticaria, and protein CD. Key allergens include metals (nickel, gold), topical medi

Patch testing with formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasers: multicentre study in Spain (2005-2009).

BACKGROUND: Formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasers are common causes of allergic contact dermatitis. OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency of sensitization to formaldehyde and seven formaldehyde-releasers. To establish and characterize groups of patients according to the results of patch testing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a 5-year retrospective study, in six Spanish hospitals, of patients with positive patch test reactions to formaldehyde or any of seven formaldehyde-releasers. RESULTS: The most frequent allergens were formaldehyde (1.72%), imidazolidinyl urea (1.05%), quaterniu

Cobalt release from implants and consumer items and characteristics of cobalt sensitized patients with dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Cobalt allergy is prevalent in dermatitis patients. Very little documentation exists about current sources of cobalt exposure. OBJECTIVES: To investigate and discuss putative sources of cobalt exposure and to present selected epidemiological data on cobalt allergy from patch-tested dermatitis patients in an attempt to better understand cobalt allergy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 19,780 dermatitis patients aged 4-99 years were patch tested with nickel, chromium or cobalt between 1985 and 2010. The cobalt spot test was used to test for cobalt ion release from mobile phones as well as co
