Lichen planopilaris (LPP) is a type of lymphocytic cicatricial alopecia, which can occur at unusual sites. It can be difficult to diagnose at an early stage and may be misdiagnosed as seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis in early stages before alopecia occurs. We report a rare case in which alopecia occurred between two long surgical scars on the scalp several years after surgery. Dermoscopy and biopsy led to a diagnosis of LPP. The localization of the lesions in our case suggests that oxidative stress from the failure of lymph flow might have induced LPP. Oral roxithromycin, a macrolide antibio

An 80-year-old man with a past medical history of basal cell carcinomas presented with an asymptomatic eruption on the chest during his biannual skin check for cancer. He had had no prior or current episodes of seborrheic dermatitis on the scalp, face, or chest. He showered and cleaned that area daily. Physical examination revealed multiple brown plaques on the upper central region of the chest (Figure 1A and B). A SMART (skin modified by alcohol rubbing test) evaluation was performed.1 A 70% isopropyl alcohol pad was used to firmly rub the area. The brown plaques and discoloration remained on

HIV-positive patients and those persons immunosuppressed as a result of other diseases or chemotherapy are especially susceptible to mycotic infections. The superficial fungal infections seen most often in patients with HIV infection include seborrheic dermatitis, various dermatophyte infections, candidiasis, and onychomycosis. Uncommonly, systemic fungal infections, such as candidiasis, histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis, and coccidioidomycosis, may disseminate to the skin, producing a wide variety of cutaneous lesions. All cutaneous lesions in these patients should be biopsied and cultured if an

The number of cases of mycotic infections are increasing, presenting physicians today with an unprecedented challenge in handling the treatment and prophylactic control of these disorders. The increase in mycotic disorders is due to many factors, such as longer life span, organ transplantation, and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. The pharmaceutical industry is providing physicians with newer, more potent drugs to manage mycoses. An overview of current practice in the use of topical and oral agents, especially ketoconazole, are given in the following specific mycoses: tinea capitis, pit

A 13-year-old boy underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for underlying acute lymphoblastic leukemia and achieved neutrophil engraftment 28 days after HSCT. He developed ichthyosis 6 weeks after HSCT and then keratotic follicular papules, palmoplantar keratoderma, and a seborrheic dermatitis-like eruption 18 weeks after HSCT. From skin biopsies he was diagnosed with eczematoid graft-versus host disease (GVHD), which showed spongiosis with scattered necrotic keratinocytes. He responded to oral and topical steroids and an increase in cyclosporine dose. Although uncom

1,476/2,320 of our cases of atopic dermatitis (AD) start in the first six months of life. The diagnosis is usually easy, but at this age it is sometimes more difficult, mainly because of lack of or rare evidence of scratching, but also because of the brief clinical history that does not allow observation of the characteristic chronic and relapsing course. Moreover, the major atopic disorders-asthma, rhinitis-usually appears later in the natural history of atopic subjects. From a differential diagnosis point of view, AD is the most definite dermatological disorder at this age. Other not well de

Several inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic conditions in HIV-infected patients are distinctive or require a biopsy for diagnosis. Some differ subtly from similar conditions seen in noninfected patients. The exanthem of acute HIV infection cannot be diagnosed specifically on biopsy as its histologic appearance is similar to that of other viral exanthemata. A condition that closely resembles seborrheic dermatitis occurs in HIV-infected patients. Plasma cells, necrotic keratinocytes, and leukocytoclasis may be present, in contrast to findings in sporadic seborrheic dermatitis. Psoriasis and

Most patients with chronic blepharoconjunctivitis will fall into one of the four seborrheic groups or the primary meibomianitis group. With all of these, there appears to be a predisposition to develop an abnormality in sebaceous glands, as manifested by the fact that such patients have clinically diagnosable seborrheic dermatitis or acne rosacea. These patients tend to develop an abnormality of either the anterior portion of the eyelid with involvement of the gland of Zeis or the posterior portion of the eyelid with involvement of the meibomian glands. Patients in the staphylococcal group are

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the pattern of triggering and exacerbation of dermatological diseases between March and July 2020 and to compare this pattern to the corresponding period of 2019.
METHODS: This was a quantitative, descriptive, comparative and documentary study that was carried out through the retrospective analysis of medical records (March to July 2019 and 2020) of individuals assisted at a private dermatology practice service located in the southern area of the city of São Paulo (SP).
RESULTS: We evaluated 992 medical consultations in 2019 and 1,176 in 2020. In 2020, we observed a sig

Among HIV-infected individuals, skin diseases cause significant morbidity and are frequently the initial indication of immunosuppression. From an on-going cohort study to determine prevalence and incidence of HIV infection among police officers (POs) and their suitability for HIV vaccine trials, a sub-study was carried out to determine the prevalence and pattern of skin diseases among HIV-infected POs and relate this to their immunodeficiency status. Consenting HIV-infected POs and their age and sex-matched HIV-negative officers were assessed for presence and type of skin diseases at their wor

The human skin harbors a wide variety of microbes that, together with their genetic information and host interactions, form the human skin microbiome. The role of the human microbiome in the development of various diseases has lately gained interest. According to several studies, changes in the cutaneous microbiota are involved in the pathophysiology of several dermatoses. A better delineation of the human microbiome and its interactions with the innate and adaptive immune systems could lead to a better understanding of these diseases, as well as the opportunity to achieve new therapeutic moda

Scabies, caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis, is a common infestation that presents with intense itching. Crusted scabies, also known as Norwegian scabies, is a severe variant of classic scabies that is characterized by hyperkeratotic lesions and often manifests in immunosuppressed patients. There is both a high parasitic load and high infectivity with this form of scabies because crusted scabies can look similar to many conditions including psoriasis, eczema, and seborrheic dermatitis, diagnosis can be difficult and is based on both clinical findings and microscopic detection of
