Caffeine restores engagement speed but not shooting precision following 22 h of active wakefulness.

BACKGROUND: Current military missions occasionally require combat readiness of soldiers who might be experiencing a sustained period of activity without sleep. Strategies to overcome the debilitating effects of sleep deprivation include the ingestion of caffeine. Unknown is the efficacy of caffeine use on specific elements of target detection and marksmanship following a modest period of sustained wakefulness. METHODS: There were 20 subjects (mean +/- SD of 26.7 +/- 7.2 yr of age, 179 +/- 6 cm in height, and 84.5 +/- 10.8 kg in weight) who participated in double-blind caffeine and placebo tri

Temporal integration for stereoscopic vision.

With normal binocular vision, maximal stereoacuity requires an extended viewing duration, but the relationship between the critical viewing duration for stereopsis and other variables affecting stereoacuity is unknown. The purposes of the study were to investigate the properties of normal temporal integration for stereoscopic vision with respect to the effects of contrast and spatial frequency of the stimuli and to determine whether the temporal summation of disparity is affected in deficient stereopsis caused by abnormal binocular vision during infancy. Psychophysical methods were used to mea

Systems of coping associated with dysphoria, anxiety and depressive illness: a multivariate profile perspective.

As numerous coping strategies to deal with stressors can be used concurrently or sequentially, it may be productive to consider coping from a broad, systemic perspective. Using profile analysis and multivariate techniques, we demonstrated that coping profiles comprising multiple strategies distinguished between various mood states (dysphoria, anxiety, major depression, dysthymia and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)). Generally, affective disturbances were associated with increased levels of rumination, cognitive distraction and emotion-focused coping (emotional expression, other-blame, self

Functional neuroanatomy of biological motion perception in humans.

We used whole brain functional MRI to investigate the neural network specifically engaged in the recognition of "biological motion" defined by point-lights attached to the major joints and head of a human walker. To examine the specificity of brain regions responsive to biological motion, brain activations obtained during a "walker vs. non-walker" discrimination task were compared with those elicited by two other tasks: (i) non-rigid motion (NRM), involving the discrimination of overall motion direction in the same "point-lights" display, and (ii) face-gender discrimination, involving the disc

Characterizing tolerance to trichloroethylene (TCE): effects of repeated inhalation of TCE on performance of a signal detection task in rats.

Previous work showed that rats develop tolerance to the acute behavioral effects of trichloroethylene (TCE) on signal detection if they inhale TCE while performing the task and that this tolerance depends more upon learning than upon changes in metabolism of TCE. The present study sought to characterize this tolerance by assessing signal detection in rats during three phases of TCE exposures. Tolerance was induced in Phase 1 (daily 1-h test sessions concurrent with TCE exposure), extinguished in Phase 2 (daily tests in air with intermittent probe tests in TCE), and reinduced in Phase 3. Origin

Learning impairments induced by glutamate blockade using dizocilpine (MK-801) in monkeys.

1. This study investigated the effects of dizocilpine (MK-801) on learning ability in a non-human primate. Acquisition and reversal learning of visual discrimination tasks and acquisition of visuo-spatial discrimination tasks were assessed in marmosets using the Wisconsin General Test Apparatus. Dizocilpine impaired acquisition of visuo-spatial (conditional) tasks requiring spatial responses to coloured objects, and perceptually difficult visual discrimination tasks in which stimulus objects are painted black. Dizocilpine did not, however, impair either acquisition or reversal of a simple visu

Selectivity in the generalization profile in baboons trained to discriminate lorazepam: benzodiazepines, barbiturates and other sedative/anxiolytics.

The discriminative stimulus effects of benzodiazepines often have been indistinguishable from those of barbiturates or other sedative/anxiolytics. However, baboons and rats trained to discriminate lorazepam did not reliably generalize to pentobarbital in previous studies, although animals comparably trained to discriminate pentobarbital reliably generalized to lorazepam. The present study investigated the generalization profile for a variety of anxiolytic, sedative and other drugs in baboons trained to discriminate oral lorazepam (1.8 mg/kg). Triazolam, alprazolam, diazepam, midazolam, bromaze

Perception of spatial orientation in spasmodic torticollis. Part I: The postural vertical.

Estimates of points of entering and exiting from upright posture were obtained from 25 seated, restrained patients with idiopathic spasmodic torticollis (ST) and matched normal subjects exposed to cycles of 1.5 degrees/s tilts in a flight simulator. Estimates were obtained for displacements in roll and pitch about upright and for yaw tilts about a rostrocaudal, "barbecue," axis with the subjects supinated. For both pitch and roll, normal subjects estimated entering upright when they were still approximately 1 degree from machine upright and perceived themselves to be upright through a mean arc

Anterior rhinal cortex and amygdala: dissociation of their contributions to memory and food preference in rhesus monkeys.

Rhesus monkeys were trained on 2 versions of delayed nonmatching-to-sample, one with multiple pairs of objects and the other with a single pair, to evaluate their ability to remember objects. They then received either bilateral aspiration lesions of the anterior rhinal cortex or bilateral excitotoxic lesions of the amygdala, or were retained as unoperated controls. On re-presentation of the multiple-pair task, monkeys with anterior rhinal cortex lesions failed to show the improvement observed in both other groups in remembering the objects over delay intervals ranging from 10 to 60 s. Also, mo

Discrimination among odorants by single neurons of the rat olfactory bulb.

1. Intracellular and extracellular recordings were made from rat olfactory bulb mitral and tufted cells during odor stimulation and during electrical stimulation of the olfactory nerve. Neurons were identified by horseradish peroxidase injections and/or antidromic activation. The presentation of multiple concentrations of at least one odorant in a cyclic artificial sniff paradigm, as reported previously (10), allowed the study of odor responses. This approach was extended to multiple odorants to compare their concentration-response profiles. This procedure avoids the problems of interpretation

Presbyacusis, hearing aids and aging.

This paper considers the factors of presbyacusis and age-related psychological changes in older adults in terms of their effects on the use or potential use of hearing aids as a means of improving aural communication. Data are presented on the prevalence of hearing impairment and the extent of hearing aid use in aging listeners. Four major classes of presbyacusis are described (sensory, neural, metabolic, and cochlear conduvtive) and a hearing aid prognosis is made for each type of disorder. It is shown that aging produces deficits in pure-tone thresholds, the speech reception threshold, and s

Inappropriate behaviour in the medical workplace - insights into organisational leadership from anthropology, psychology and related sciences.

Medicine is based on a long apprenticeship and mentorship that entails respect for skilled and experienced leaders - a process that lends the profession prestige. However, as is often the case with such professional values, this respect for leaders can be abused, and medicine continues to struggle with high levels of bullying, harassment and discrimination by medical leaders that adversely impact on medical staff and the communities they serve. We explore why inappropriate behaviour in the medical workplace has not seemingly receded in this context. Insights from anthropological and social psy

Assessing aggressiveness quickly and efficiently: the Spanish adaptation of Aggression Questionnaire-refined version.

The assessment of aggressiveness and the prediction of aggression has become a relevant research and applied topic in Psychiatry and Psychology. There have been many attempts in order to get a fast and reliable tool to measure aggression. Buss and Durkee started the pathway, and recently Bryant and Smith developed a tool with an enormous potential, a fast-applicable, reliable and valid test. We herein report a Spanish adaptation of this test and we show that aggressiveness can be measured rapidly, and in a simple, valid and reliable way across different populations. We focus on the discriminan

Coping With Pandemics: A Historical Perspective About Society's Tools to Deal With Global Infectious Diseases.

Throughout history, society has dealt with several devastating pandemics. Our objective is to analyze society's coping mechanisms to deal with pandemic-related stress in history congruent with the values of the time. For that purpose, we have carefully selected some of the most significant pandemics based on their impact and the available psychosocial literature. After a brief introduction, society's coping tools are reviewed and analyzed for the Antonine Plague, the second bubonic plague, the third cholera pandemic, the Spanish flu, the HIV pandemic, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite occurri

Abuse of residents: it's time to take action.

The scientific study of the sexual dynamics that come into play during residency training seems to both fascinate and repel trainees and their supervisors. One of the more provocative and shameful dimensions of this area of inquiry, the abuse of residents, causes a good deal of distress. How do we respond to findings of significant psychological abuse, discrimination on the basis of sex or sexual orientation and sexual harassment in medical settings? How can we ignore over a decade of research? How can we not heed the experience of so many young physicians? Given the uncertain times in Canadia

Evidence of validity, reliability, and measurement invariance of the psychological characteristics related to sport performance questionnaire in Colombian athletes.

BACKGROUND: The assessment of psychological characteristics is crucial for the intervention and monitoring of sports performance. However, there is a lack of instruments for measuring psychological characteristics in Colombian athletes. METHODS: This research aimed to examine the validity and reliability of the scores obtained from the Psychological Characteristics related to Sport Performance Questionnaire (CPRD in Spanish). Two complementary studies were conducted: Study 1 included 1.305 athletes, comprising 412 women and 893 men, with an age range between 13 and 59 years, divided into age

Development and Validation of Tawbah Scale Among Pakistani Muslims.

Tawbah (repentance) holds a central place in Islamic theology, serving as both a spiritual imperative and a path to psychological renewal. Despite its theological richness, tawbah remains underexplored in empirical psychological research, particularly within Muslim populations. The present study aimed to develop and validate a multidimensional Tawbah Scale (TS) grounded in Islamic teachings and contextualized within Pakistani Muslim culture. Drawing on Qur'anic exegesis, focus group discussions, and semi-structured interviews with religious scholars and laypersons, an initial item pool was gen

Repeated Cannabidiol treatment reduces cocaine intake and modulates neural proliferation and CB1R expression in the mouse hippocampus.

Cannabinoid derivatives have shown promising results for treating neuropsychiatric disorders, including drug addiction. Recent studies on the therapeutic effects of Cannabidiol (CBD) on drug abuse showed mixed results, especially with psychostimulant substances such as cocaine. To determine whether CBD can attenuate cocaine reinforcement, we assessed behavioural responses induced by cocaine in mice, using the behavioural sensitization, conditioned place preference and intravenous self-administration paradigms. We show that repeated CBD treatment produces anxiolytic effects in the elevated plus
