PURPOSE: The anatomical variations of the thyroid gland including separate thyroidal remnant at the thyrothymic area are of significance during thyroid surgery for "total" thyroidectomy, and for recurrent goitre. In the present study, we aimed to detect the separate rests of thyroidal tissue in the thyrothymic region.
METHODS: The thyrothymic region was explored for identification, dissection, and excision of separate thyroidal remnants in 134 patients who underwent primary thyroid surgery. In this series, we studied the incidence and anatomical features of the thyrothymic remnant and its rel

The embryologic development of the spinal cord is a remarkably complex process. Spinal abnormalities can occur in isolation or be part of a … es in the various planes and one should be able to correlate the abnormal findings with spinal cord embryology as it aids in identifying the etiology. US should be considered as a first-line imaging for neonates suspected of spinal anomalies. In this article, we discuss up-to-date US technique of the spine, the most frequently encountered neonatal spinal mal …

The triad of micrognathia, glossoptosis, and concomitant airway obstruction defined as "Robin sequence" (RS) is caused by oropharyngeal developmental events constrained by a reduced stomadeal space. This sequence of abnormal embryonic development also results in an anatomical configuration that might predispose the fetus to a cleft palate. RS is heterogeneous and many different etiologies have been described including syndromic, RS-plus, and isolated forms. For an optimal diagnosis, subsequent treatment and prognosis, a thorough understanding of the embryology and pathogenesis is necessary. Th…

Classically, the globulomaxillary cyst was considered to be an inclusion or developmental cyst that arises from entrapped nonodontogenic epithelium in the globulomaxillary suture. Subsequently Christ disputed the existence and histogenesis of this lesion stating that the evidence indicated that facial processes per se did not exist. The development of the anterior maxilla was attributed to the merging of growth centers rather than fusion of facial processes, and hence ectodermal entrapment was ruled out. Recent embryologic studies, however, have demonstrated that Christ's view of facial develo

It is imperative for all imaging specialists to be familiar with detailed multiplanar computed tomography imaging anatomy of the paranasal sinuses and adjacent structures. This article reviews, in brief, the radiologically relevant embryology of the sinonasal region and discusses the imaging anatomy of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Radiologists should understand the importance and clinical implications of identifying the numerous anatomic variations encountered in this region and prepare a structured report that provides a surgical road map to the referring clinician.

Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich (HWW) syndrome is a rare complex female urogenital anomaly, with diverse anatomical presentations. Due to obstruction, most patients with HWW syndrome need to be addressed surgically. The treatment strategy should be tailored to the different anatomical variants of each patient. Therefore, a detailed and comprehensive preoperative evaluation is needed. In this review, we describe the embryology and clinical manifestations of HWW syndrome and discuss and illustrate its diverse preoperative magnetic resonance imaging presentations to guide clinical treatment.

This case study presents an infant with non-specific symptoms for esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula shortly after birth. A detailed examination of the infant provides clues to the potential diagnosis while the radiograph provides confirmation. This column provides the clinician with a detailed evaluation of the x-ray findings specific to the infant with esophageal atresia with and without tracheo esophageal fistula. Additionally, a description of the different types of this congenital anomaly, embryology, pathophysiology, testing, treatment, and nursing considerations is present…

Pediatric foot polydactyly presents in a wide variety of deformities from single extra digits attached only by a narrow soft-tissue connection to complex central foot duplications with tarsal bone duplication. The goal of surgical reconstruction is a stable, mobile, pain-free foot with five cosmetically appealing toes that allows for normal footwear and painless ambulation. This review covers the incidence, genetics and embryology, classification, presentation and natural history, physical examination, radiographic assessment, and surgical intervention for all types of foot polydactyly.

This document is designed to assist in vitro fertility clinics in the management of cryopreserved reproductive tissues stored in cryogenic storage (cryostorage) tanks, based upon scientific principles and laboratory experience related to best practice for safe and reliable storage of cryopreserved reproductive tissue. Embryology and andrology laboratories provide storage of often irreplaceable reproductive tissues such as oocytes, embryos, sperm, and ovarian and testicular tissues, including tissues from cancer patients. All of these reproductive tissues must be maintained under stringent cond…

Orbital lesions in the pediatric population vary from adults in terms of their presentation, unique pathology, and imaging characteristics. The prompt and accurate diagnosis of these lesions is imperative to prevent serious consequences in terms of visual impairment and disfigurement. Along with dedicated ophthalmologic examination, imaging is instrumental in characterizing these lesions, both for accurate diagnosis and subsequent management. In our pictorial essay, we provide a basic review of orbital embryology, anatomy, and congenital orbital pathologies, with emphasis on radiological findi…

The appearance of the female external genitalia is key for understanding and diagnosing many diseases that women of all ages encounter. Alas, the normal appearance of the vulva is an elusive concept, scarcely represented in textbooks, and the growing number of vulvar cosmetic surgery calls for a review of the normal appearance of the vulva and its diversity. In this paper I will review vulvar embryology, anatomy, the current literature discussing vulvar appearance, and describe meticulous vulvar examination, including the diagnostic tools.

We describe the case of an elderly albino man who presented with the typical features of a caecal malignancy and underwent a right hemi-colectomy. Histological assessment subsequently revealed the tumour to be a primary malignant melanoma of the colon. This unexpected diagnosis raises interesting questions regarding the embryology and aetiology of this rare tumour and the anticipated prognosis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a primary colonic melanoma associated with oculocutaneous albinism.

Fetal arrhythmias may be benign or life-threatening. Benign disturbances in fetal cardiac rhythm are relatively common, and their clinical manifestations are reviewed. Life-threatening fetal arrhythmias include supraventricular tachycardias, atrial flutter, ventricular or junctional tachycardia, chaotic atrial tachycardia, and bradyarrhythmias such as second or third degree AV block. The incidence, diagnostic characteristics and treatment of each of these are reviewed. In addition, the pathophysiology of hydrops fetalis, embryology of the conduction system and transplacental drug transfer char…

Two cases of casual discovery of persistent left superior vena cava during cardiac surgery are reported. Diagnoses were suspected at the time of peroperative transoesophageal echocardiography in the first case, and of preoperative fluoroscopy during a Swan-Ganz catheter insertion procedure in the second case. For both patients, a peroperative echo contrast study permitted to confirm the anomaly before initialization of cardiopulmonary bypass. Embryology, echocardiographic findings and surgical management, including cardioplegia delivering and left upper venous system drainage, are reviewed.

A 48-year-old woman with congenital mirror movements of the hands presented with a high cervical split spinal cord malformation and a ventrally located neurenteric cyst. The clinical, radiological, and surgical features are presented. A brief discussion of the literature and embryology pertaining to split cord malformations and mirror movements is included. To our knowledge, this is the first case of radiographically and surgically proven split cord malformation associated with either mirror movements or a neurenteric cyst presenting in an adult.

Rare types of aortic arch malformations include isolation of the right or left subclavian arteries in conjunction with a left or right aortic arch respectively. Isolation of the innominate or carotid arteries and an aberrant left innominate artery may exist in association with a right aortic arch. Other anomalies are persistent fifth aortic arch, subclavian artery as the first branch of the aortic arch, pulmonary artery, and ductus arteriosus sling. The angiocardiographic features and embryology of each of these malformations are discussed.

We report an anorchic patient with normal male phenotype and 46,XY karyotype. Plasma levels of gonadotropins and testosterone were abnormally low. Administration of human chorionic gonadotropin caused no increase in plasma testosterone, and injection of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone resulted in a lack of plasma gonadotropin response. Sex-determining region Y was detected by DNA studies of peripheral white blood cells. Laparoscopy revealed absence of testis, Wolffian and Müllerian derivatives. We discuss the embryology and hormone condition in an anorchic patient.
