The Juvenile Sex Offender.

In this article, we investigate whether the life events of marriage, parenthood, and employment were associated with general offending for a Dutch sample of 498 juvenile sex offenders (JSOs). In previous empirical studies, these life events were found to limit adult general offending in the population as well as high-risk samples. A hybrid random effects model is used to investigate within-individual changes of these life events in association with general offending. We also investigated whether the findings differed for child abusers, peer abusers, and group offenders, as they have distinct b…

Do the academician independent directors promote green innovation in enterprises?

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Using the manually collated data on the employment of academicians as independent directors by Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed firms from 2010 to 2020, the role and impact mechanism of academician independent directors on enterprise green innovation were empirically analyzed. The research shows that the academician independent directors promote green innovation of enterprises by alleviating corporate financing constraints, increasing corporate R&D investment, and alleviating managerial myopia, and their role in promoting green invention patents is greater than that of green utility model …

Institutional Castling: Military Enlistment and Mass Incarceration in the United States.

The military is a major state provider of employment, occupational training, and educational subsidies. Yet military downsizing and its increased selectivity during penal expansion may have cleaved off employment opportunities for disadvantaged men. We show how institutional castling-the shifting prominence of competing institutions in the lives of specific demographic groups-has affected the underlying risk of military employment and penal confinement. Black veterans who have dropped out of high school are less likely to be incarcerated than their nonveteran counterparts, and declines in the …

Work-Related Intervention Programs: Desistance From Criminality and Occupational Integration Among Released Prisoners on Parole.

The present research examines the integration into employment of prisoners on parole who had been under the supervision of the Prisoner Rehabilitation Authority during the period 2007-2010. The supervision program included rehabilitation in the community, with the emphasis on employment. The research compares integration in employment and rates of reincarceration for the supervised group with prisoners who had been released from prison after serving their full sentences. The findings indicate that among prisoners who had participated in the supervision program, there is better integration into…

[BASELINE SCREENING USING INTERFERON-GAMMA RELEASE ASSAY SUGGESTS AN INCREASED RISK OF MYCOBACTERIUM TUBERCULOSIS INFECTION AMONG EMPLOYEES IN A JAPANESE GENERAL HOSPITAL].

OBJECTIVES: This retrospective study aimed to assess the risk of tuberculosis infection for the employees of a Japanese hospital using baseline interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA). The risk was defined as exposure to the hospital environment. METHODS: In total, 870 hospital employees including 161 new employees, 582 for baseline assay, and 127 for contact examination (709 subjects in the post-employment group) were examined from December 2010 to April 2012. The new employees were considered as the "non-exposure" group, whereas the post-employment group was considered as the "exposure" group…

Cancer incidence among women in the workplace: a study of the association between occupation and industry and 11 cancer sites.

Few studies of the occupational etiology of cancer have focused upon the risks that women experience in the workplace. In this case-referent study of 11 cancer sites (lung, colon, rectum, bladder, esophagus, liver, salivary gland, stomach, eye, melanoma of the skin, mesothelioma), 7686 women in the Detroit area were interviewed to obtain lifetime histories of employment, tobacco use, and adult health, as well as demographic information. The results provide both methodologic and substantive leads for future investigations of the association between women's employment and their risk of cancer. W…

Validity of the dictionary of occupational titles residual functional capacity battery.

BACKGROUND DATA: The Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT) is a U.S. government publication that defines each job in the United States according to 20 job factors. Fishbain et al. (Spine 1994;19:872-80) developed a DOT residual functional capacity (RFC) battery whose predictive validity for employment/unemployment had not been tested previously. OBJECTIVES: The purposes of this study were as follows: (a) to determine whether results of a DOT-RFC battery performed at completion of pain facility treatment predicted employment status at 30 months' follow-up and (b) to determine whether the DOT…

From free pastures to penned in: The within-person effects of psychological reactance on side-hustlers' hostility and initiative in full-time work.

Multiple jobholding is increasingly common, particularly among full-time employees who have adopted side-hustles-income-generating work from the gig economy that is performed alongside full-time work. A distinguishing feature of side-hustles is substantial autonomy in the work's timing, location, and method. This autonomy has typically been portrayed as beneficial. We shift this consensus by developing a within-person model that suggests elevated side-hustle autonomy-relative to what is typical for that person-sets the employee on a course to feel "boxed in" by their full-time job. Drawing on

The science behind the smile. Interview by Gardiner Morse.

Only recently have we been able to apply science to one of the world's oldest questions: "What is the nature of happiness?" In this edited interview, the author of the 2006 best seller Stumbling on Happiness surveys the field. Gilbert explores the sudden emergence of happiness as a discipline, reviews the major findings (including the mistakes we all make in predicting how happy or miserable we'll be), and examines the role of happiness in productivity on the job. He describes what makes us truly happy-it's not a promotion or a new house-and sketches out a "happiness diet" that emphasizes smal

Estimating the Intersecting Labor Market Disparities for Justice-Impacted Individuals with Disabilities: Evidence from Two United States National Data Sets.

Individuals with disabilities and people with a history of justice interaction each face substantial barriers to employment. These populations also significantly overlap, with two-thirds of individuals in federal or state prisons reporting at least one disability. Studies qualitatively explore how justice-impacted individuals with disabilities (JIID) face compounded labor market disadvantages, often shaped by race and gender. However, there has been little effort to quantify this disadvantage robustly. Our study addresses this gap by analyzing data from two national datasets, the Rehabilitatio…

Variables Affecting Return to Work After Spinal Surgery in a Non-workers' Compensation Population: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Return-to-work (RTW) outcomes following spine surgery are critical information for patients aspiring to return to employment following surgical correction. Among patients receiving workers' compensation (WC), spinal surgery has been repeatedly linked to poor RTW rates. However, among patients not receiving WC, the percentage of patients who return to employment is unclear. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 326 non-WC patients who underwent spinal surgery at two institutions. We determined RTW status and analyzed potential predictors of RTW status. RESULTS: P…

[Current Status and Challenges of Work-Related Issues among Cancer Patients].

The 5-year relative survival rate of cancer patients in Japan has reached 62.1% owing to advances in cancer treatments. Half of the people are diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lifetime, and one-third of cancer patients belong to the working-age generation between the ages of 20 and 65. In Japan, various governmental policies have been developed in a short period of time with the aim of balancing cancer treatment and employment. The Basic Plan to Promote Cancer Control Programs in Japan, enacted in 2017, specifies the need to prevent cancer patients from leaving employment and to su…

Growing up with ADHD: How diagnosis shapes socioeconomic trajectories.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most prevalent mental health disorder diagnosed in childhood in the United States, and evidence on its long-term economic consequences has largely been established using diagnosis-based measures. This paper examines how a childhood ADHD diagnosis affects adult labor market outcomes, focusing on disentangling employment effects from earnings effects and addressing sources of bias in self-reported diagnoses. Using data from Wave IV (2008-2009) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), comprising 8570 part…

How rising ICE activity influences the childcare workforce.

Immigrants play a critical role in the US childcare workforce, yet little is known about how immigration enforcement shapes employment in this essential sector. We study how the sharp escalation in community-based Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity following President Trump's inauguration in early 2025 affected childcare employment in the United States. Monthly data from the Current Population Survey are linked to compiled state-level ICE arrest records from September 2023 through September 2025, to ask how changes in enforcement intensity influence employment across childcare …

Associations between exposure to ethylene oxide, job termination, and cause-specific mortality risk.

BACKGROUND: Previous analyses of mortality were conducted in a large cohort of ethylene oxide (EtO) exposed workers employed at 13 sterilization facilities throughout the U.S. and followed from the start of operation through 1998. Statistically significant elevated mortality was reported from hematopoietic cancer in men and breast cancer in women compared to the general population. Possible healthy worker survivor bias was not addressed. METHODS: To examine survivor bias in this cohort, employment termination was analyzed with statistical models stratified on sex and race that included age, e…
