This article discusses the plague epidemic that broke out in Scotland in the mid 1640s, particularly its effects on the city of Aberdeen where it remained virulent from April 1647 until the end of the following year. Prevailing medical understandings of disease causation and transmission will be discussed, and it will be shown that governments attempted to restrict outbreaks in accordance with these beliefs. The spread of plague throughout Scotland from 1644 will be summarised, with the focus on the impact of the disease on Aberdeen in 1647-48. The surviving council registers and other primary

Schultz et al (2008) raised the question whether regression into autism is triggered, not by the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, but by acetaminophen (Tylenol) given for its fever and pain. Considerable evidence supports this contention, most notably the exponential rise in the incidence of autism since 1980, when acetaminophen began to replace aspirin for infants and young children. The impetus for this shift - a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warning that aspirin was associated with Reye's syndrome - has since been compellingly debunked. If aspirin is not to be feared as a c

Gonorrhea in spite of its fully elucidated etiopathogenesis and available drugs for etiotropic therapy belongs to infections which are not controlled by vaccination due to absence of immunity formation. Analysis of scientific publication, statistical materials and WHO's data showed that epidemic process of gonorrhea infection depends mainly from people's behaviour, first of all, sexual. Modern epidemic process of gonorrhea infection consists from irregular increases and decreases of incidence due to various reasons. Reasons for increases of incidence appear to be simultaneous action of a range

The incidence of placenta accreta, defined as the abnormal adherence of the placenta to the uterine wall, has been increasing alarmingly in the developed as well as the developing world. There is considerable maternal morbidity and mortality related to the condition. The pathophysiology focuses on the balance between decidualisation on the one hand and trophoblast invasion on the other. Pathological diagnosis relies on the finding of placental villi in direct apposition to myometrium, either in hysterectomy specimens or in placental basal plates.

BACKGROUND: Second generation surveillance of HIV infection and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among pregnant women in 6 Pacific Island Countries and Territories were undertaken to improve knowledge and to make recommendations on future prevention and management of STIs.
METHODS: Cross-sectional studies, using standardized questionnaire, laboratory tests, and protocols were undertaken in Fiji, Kiribati, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu between 2004 and 2005. For each country, between 200 and 350 pregnant women aged 15 to 44 years were consecutively recruited from antenatal c

Meningococcus, an obligate human bacterial pathogen, remains a worldwide and devastating cause of epidemic meningitis and sepsis. However, advances have been made in our understanding of meningococcal biology and pathogenesis, global epidemiology, transmission and carriage, host susceptibility, pathophysiology, and clinical presentations. Approaches to diagnosis, treatment, and chemoprophylaxis are now in use on the basis of these advances. Importantly, the next generation of meningococcal conjugate vaccines for serogroups A, C, Y, W-135, and broadly effective serogroup B vaccines are on the h

UNLABELLED: Epidemic dropsy is a multi-system disease involving the cardiovascular, hepatic, renal, ocular and other systems. It is a toxic disease caused by the unintentional ingestion of Argemone mexicana (prickly yellow poppy) seeds as an adulterant of wheat flour or more commonly of cooking oil such as mustard oil.
PURPOSE: To investigate the occurrence of visual field defects in patients suffering from epidemic dropsy glaucoma.
METHODS: Visual field analysis was performed to ascertain the field defects, in patients suffering from epidemic dropsy. Group I consisted of 35 patients (69 eye

The term epidemic (from the Greek epi [on] plus demos [people]), first used by Homer, took its medical meaning when Hippocrates used it as the title of one of his famous treatises. At that time, epidemic was the name given to a collection of clinical syndromes, such as coughs or diarrheas, occurring and propagating in a given period at a given location. Over centuries, the form and meaning of the term have changed. Successive epidemics of plague in the Middle Ages contributed to the definition of an epidemic as the propagation of a single, well-defined disease. The meaning of the term continue…

More than 20 years into the human immunodeficiency virus-type 1 (HIV-1) epidemic, women account for nearly half of the 40 million people living with HIV-1 worldwide, with an even higher proportion existing in developing countries. Social determinants of female vulnerability to HIV-1 include gender disparities, poverty, cultural and sexual norms, lack of education, and violence. Women are also more susceptible to HIV-1 because of hormonal changes, vaginal microbial ecology and physiology, and a higher prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases. Prevention strategies must address the wide range

Disease epidemics have influenced world history throughout time. Although disease patterns such as the plague and smallpox historically have been infectious in nature, chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, and end-stage renal disease have become the new global epidemics. The effects of these conditions affect nearly all populations of the world. Although high blood pressure has been implicated as the common link of these pandemic patterns only for less than half a century, the impact of hypertension treatment and control has become a documented popu…

There has been an increase in the incidence of obesity, which is a substantial component of metabolic syndrome. It is visceral obesity, which especially favours the occurrence of insulin resistance endothelial dysfunction and acceleration of atherogenesis. The influence of inflammation, neuro-humoral balance, genetic background and sleep apnoea on the metabolic syndrome development are discussed. Current opinions on the treatment of metabolic syndrome are shown.

We report a case of epidemic typhus in a patient from the Batna region of Algeria, who presented with generalized febrile exanthema. The clinical diagnosis was confirmed by serological cross-adsorption followed by Western blotting. Our report emphasizes the threat of epidemic typhus in the highlands of Algeria.

In typhoid epidemy in Tadjikistan we studied hemograms obtained in 200 patients and 100 healthy controls matched by age. Though hematological shifts are considered to be typical of typhoid, most of the patients had no hematological disorders despite their severe condition. Hemograms were normal in half of the patients at the height of typhoid while other patients often (40-43%) had accelerated ESR, uneosinophilia and left shift of immature neutrophils.
