A simple epidemiological method for animal trypanosomiasis to provide relevant data for effective financial decision-making.

The epidemiology of bovine trypanosomiasis on Galana Ranch, Kenya was studied for one year (July 1980--June 1981), using measurements from an experimental population of 3 types of Boran cattle. The results were applied to the estimated ranch population at risk, and an attempt was made to measure the potential economic loss due to trypanosomiasis. The potential losses in beef production due to trypanosomiasis in the ranch population at risk at Galana were estimated at around K.Shs. 8900/km2, when the stocking rate was 14.2 Tropical Livestock Units per km2. The estimated potential loss in the to

[Organization and accomplishing of antituberculosis measures in the Republic of Ingushetia].

The epidemiological situation in tuberculosis in the Republic of Ingushetia is evaluated. The unsatisfactory sanitary and hygienic state of camps for migrants (persons, forced to quit the place of their permanent residence), has been found to create favorable conditions for the spread of tuberculosis. Recommendations on the improvement of the organization and carrying out of measures for controlling tuberculosis among both temporarily displaced persons and the local population, as well as on the improvement of the material base of the laboratory diagnostics of tuberculosis, are proposed.

The effect of various interventions during a typhoid epidemic. Results of a simulation study.

This paper presents an epidemiological model for typhoid fever epidemics or paratyphoid diseases with an enteric course, as well as a deterministic approach for the quantitative representation of this model. The model has been tested against one typhoid and two paratyphoid epidemics which occurred in the Federal Republic of Germany. It was possible to simulate the course of these epidemics with sufficient precision, and to obtain information on the effects of various interventions (e.g. oral vaccination or hygiene measures).

Pinworms (enterobius vermicularis).

Pinworm infestation (enterobiasis, syn. oxyuriasis), though not usually dangerous, remains one of the commonest parasitic infections seen by the family physician. Particularly prevalent in the pediatric age group, pinworms also infect adults; in both groups the commonest symptom is pruritus ani. Detailed descriptions of history, life cycle, and epidemiology are given. In addition to hygienic measures useful in treatment, the particulars of drug therapy are also outlined.

Paranoia in African-American men receiving inpatient psychiatric treatment.

The present study tested a continuum model of paranoid symptom expression in a sample of African-American men receiving inpatient treatment in a state psychiatric hospital. The continuum measure comprised the scales of Distrust (DST), Perceived Hostility of Others (PHO), and False Beliefs and Perceptions (FBP) from the Psychiatric Epidemiology Research Interview (PERI), reflecting mild to severe paranoia, in the order listed. They were interviewer administered with other self-report symptom measures, within three weeks of hospital admission, by ethnically matched interviewers. A multivariate m

Effects of curcumin on anthropometric measurements in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: An umbrella meta-analysis study.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) affects approximately 30% of the global population and is associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome. Anthropometric indices such as body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and weight are crucial markers for evaluating the progression of MAFLD. Curcumin, a bioactive compound with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, has been investigated for its potential to improve metabolic outcomes. This umbrella review aimed to systematically evaluate the effects of curcumin supplementation on anthropometric indices in patie

[Changes in the epidemiology of human leptospirosis in the Slovak Republic].

BACKGROUND: The epidemiologic patterns of infectious diseases are liable to change in the course of time. References to such changes in leptospirosis are very rare and of low systematic value. OBJECTIVES: The study is aimed at the detection of changes in the epidemiology of leptospirosis within the 20 years in Slovakia. METHODS: Basic epidemiologic characteristics of leptoospirosis were compared within two chronological periods. 598 registered cases were analyzed during the first period (1970-1976), and 200 cases of leptospirosis were analysed during the second period (1986-1991). A measurement model of adolescent smoking.

Self report measures of smoking may contain substantial measurement error. If these errors are nonrandom, then they may be correlated with substantive variables in epidemiologic or intervention studies, thus confounding and biasing estimates of structural relations. In efforts to circumvent such bias, investigators have supplemented questionnaires with biological indicators of exposure to tobacco smoke. However, errors in biological indicators may also include systematic errors that produce biased estimates. The current study was designed to estimate the variance of systematic and random error

The relationship between development indicators and HIV epidemiology: a global perspective on social determinants.

Despite major strides in global HIV prevention and treatment, development imbalances and gender disparities continue to shape the epidemic's burden worldwide. This study aimed to examine the associations between development indicators - including the Human Development Index (HDI), Gender Inequality Index (GII), Life Expectancy at Birth (LEaB), and Universal Health Coverage (UHC) - and HIV epidemiological measures (incidence, prevalence, mortality, and antiretroviral therapy [ART] coverage). HIV-related data for 2023 were obtained from the UNAIDS database. Countries with missing data were exclu

Global prevalence of respiratory virus infections in adults and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, efforts have been made to contain the spread of the virus. However, the epidemiological burden of other respiratory viruses during the pandemic is unclear. We aim to address the epidemiology of respiratory viruses on adults/adolescents since the beginning of the pandemic. METHODS: We systematically searched five databases and performed a meta-analysis to explore the pooled prevalence of respiratory viruses in different geographical regions, age groups, and periods and compared the prevalence between COVID-19 cases and non-COVID-19 pati

Associations between antibiotic exposure and abnormal cardiac enzyme profiles in older Chinese adults.

Biomonitoring methods can be used to measure exposure to antibiotics in the general population; however, epidemiological data on the associations between urinary antibiotic levels and the cardiac profiles of enzymes lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase, and creatine kinase isoenzyme in older adults remain sparse. We investigated these associations in 990 individuals from the Cohort of Elderly Health and Environment Controllable Factors. Antibiotic residues in urine samples were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Urinary levels of 34 antibiotics we

An interregional measles outbreak in Spain with nosocomial transmission, November 2017 to July 2018.

Given sustained high vaccination coverage and enhanced surveillance for measles, Spain has been free of endemic measles transmission since 2014, achieving elimination certification from the World Health Organization in 2017. In November 2017, measles was introduced through an imported case travelling to the Valencian Community, causing an interregional outbreak. Here, we describe the outbreak using data reported to the national epidemiological surveillance network. The outbreak involved 154 cases (67 males, 87 females) notified in four regions; 148 were laboratory-confirmed and six epidemiolog

Use of expanded Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B panels with the serum bactericidal antibody assay for the evaluation of meningococcal B vaccine effectiveness.

INTRODUCTION: Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B (NmB) antigens are inherently diverse with variable expression among strains. Prediction of meningococcal B (MenB) vaccine effectiveness therefore requires an assay suitable for use against large panels of epidemiologically representative disease-causing NmB strains. Traditional serum bactericidal antibody assay using exogenous human complement (hSBA) is limited to the quantification of MenB vaccine immunogenicity on a small number of indicator strains. AREAS COVERED: Additional and complementary methods for assessing strain coverage developed

Laboratory associated zoonotic parasitic infections: a review of main agents and biosecurity measures.

Laboratory workers are exposed to the risk of acquiring infections due to the manipulation of infectious materials. The biological hazard for researchers is seven times higher when compared with hospital and public health laboratory workers. Despite the implementation of standardized practices to control infections, multiple cases of Laboratory Associated Infections (LAIs) usually go unreported. There has been a lack of comprehensive epidemiological data regarding the situation of LAIs for parasitic zoonosis and besides, the available sources are not completely updated. Since most accounts of

Epidemiology of respiratory virus before and during COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID pandemic has forcefully turned the spotlight on the importance of the diagnosis of respiratory virus infections. Viruses have always been a frequent and common cause of respiratory tract infections. Rapid molecular diagnostics applied to the diagnostics of respiratory virus infections has revolutionized microbiology laboratories only a few years ago. Few studies illustrate the epidemiology of respiratory viruses, and fewer still those that have compared the pre-pandemic to the pandemic period. During the first year of the pandemic (2020-2021) it was clear to everyone to witness a sud

Do Vaccines Have a Role as a Cause of Autoimmune Neurological Syndromes?

Vaccines are the most important preventive measure against infectious diseases presently available. Although they have led to the eradication or the elimination of some infectious diseases, concerns about safety are among the main reasons for vaccine hesitancy. In some cases, the biological plausibility of a given damage in association with the temporal association between vaccine administration and disease development makes it difficult to define causality and can justify hesitancy. Only well-conducted epidemiological studies with adequate evaluation of results can clarify whether a true asso

Epidemiology and Control of Leishmaniasis in the Former USSR: A Review Article.

BACKGROUND: All types of the Old World's leishmaniasis were endemic on the territory of the South regions of ex-USSR. Epidemiological situation was well under control during the USSR era, due to implementation of complex anti-leismaniasis measures. These interventions were dramatically stopped as a result of the collapse of the USSR. METHODS: Most relevant publications on epidemiology and control of leishmaniases in the Republics of Central Asia and Transcaucasia of the ex-USSR were screened. RESULTS: Within the endemic area, the foci of different kinds of leishmaniasis are often overlapped

Environmental exposure to combustion-derived air pollution is associated with reduced functional capacity in apparently healthy individuals.

Prior toxicological exposure reports demonstrated the decremental effect of several air pollutants on the metabolic equivalents achieved during exercise testing (METs). There are no prior large scale epidemiological reports about the effect of environmental air pollution exposure on those parameters. We analyzed a cohort of apparently healthy individuals attending a screening survey program held between 2003 and 2009. Participants were included if residing within an 11 km radius from the nearest air pollution monitoring station. Linear regression models were fitted for the metabolic equivalent
