[Surgical orbital decompression in Basedowian optic neuropathy. Apropos of 5 cases].

Surgical orbital decompression in 5 patients with basedowian optic neuropathy restored the visual acuity and visual field in all cases. The place of surgery among the different therapeutic options proposed for this serious complication of Basedow's disease is discussed, as well as the advantages over other decompression techniques of the procedure used : the cutaneous approach to a trans-ethmoidonasal decompression.

A clinically applicable reporting system for the diagnosis of facial fractures.

A clinically applicable, comprehensive reporting system for the diagnosis of facial fractures was developed with three guiding principles: (1) preservation of classical anatomical terminology and nomenclature, (2) facilitation of uniform interpretation of radiographs between radiologists and (3) non-redundant diagnostic descriptions of complex fractures, in a manner that correlates with treatment modality. Twenty-two fracture types (17 simple fracture types and 5 complex fracture types) are included in the system. Each patient's fracture pattern is described by listing the component fractures

Intraoperative navigation assisted reconstruction of a maxillo-facial gunshot wound.

INTRODUCTION: This case report describes a suicidal gunshot wound to the head using a handgun (9 x 19 mm). During mandibular penetration, the solid hollow point projectile (Aktion4) was deformed but did not fragment. The mandible, mid-face, orbit, and nasal complex were severely damaged. Here, the authors present, for the first time, a new approach for bilateral mid-facial fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For virtual reconstruction, a naso-orbito-ethmoidal complex of an unaffected skull (same age, sex, and ethnic group) was merged into the computed tomography (CT) data set. Based on this dat

Extracranial repair of cerebrospinal fluid fistulas: technique and results in 37 patients.

Although neurosurgeons have traditionally preferred intracranial repair for the management of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistulas, this approach is associated with the complications of a craniotomy, anosmia, and a high incidence of recurrent fistulas. Extracranial repair, on the other hand, produces no central nervous system morbidity, preserves olfaction, and is associated with a low incidence of recurrence. Although there have been several reports of extracranial repair of CSF fistulas by otorhinolaryngologists, this approach has received scant mention in the neurosurgical literature. We repo

Post Traumatic Frontal Sinus Mucocele with Subcutaneous Extension: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Langenbach (1820) first described paranasal sinus mucoceles under the name of hydatids. Roulette (1909) introduced the name mucocele. Paranasal sinus mucocele is the accumulation of mucus secretions and exfoliated epithelium in the sinuses, causing enlargement of the sinus walls. It is considered a cystic, dilatation-eroding lesion. However, the mucocele often occurs as a localized mass, causing bone erosion and displacement of surrounding structures. If left untreated, a nearby mucocele in the brain can become infected and lead to death. Frontal sinuses are often involved; sphenoi

Experiences and Outcomes in Olfactory Neuroblastoma Over A Decade at a Tertiary Cancer Center.

Background  Olfactory neuroblastoma is a rare epithelial malignancy arising from the odorant receptors in the nasal mucosa or along the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone. Clinical presentation includes nasal stuffiness, local pain, epistaxis, anosmia, visual impairment, proptosis, headache, and seizures. Radiologic imaging with CT or MRI, an ophthalmic evaluation, and histopathologic confirmation with immunohistochemistry are parts of the initial diagnostic workup. Although surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation have an equally important role in the management, earlier stages may preferably b…

NUT carcinoma, an under-recognized malignancy: a clinicopathologic and molecular series of 6 cases showing a subset of patients with better prognosis and a rare ZNF532::NUTM1 fusion.

NUT carcinoma (NC) is a rare malignancy with aggressive clinical behavior, defined by rearrangements involving the NUTM1 gene locus. This entity is often under-recognized and its diagnosis may be challenging. In this study, we describe a subset of patients that, despite the molecularly proven diagnosis of NC, show improved outcomes. In addition, we describe one case with the novel ZNF532::NUTM1 fusion. All cases of NC diagnosed from 2013 to 2022 in our department were retrieved. FISH using dual color bring-together probes and next-generation sequencing assay were performed to characterize the

[Analysis of the clinical and pathological characteristics of sinonasal neoplasms].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical and pathological characteristics of sinonasal neoplasms. METHOD: A cohort of 333 patients with sinonasal neoplasm, which were confirmed by surgical pathology, were enrolled in this study. The clinicopathological characteristics, in terms of age, sex, location, and disease constituent ratio were retrospectively reviewed. RESULT: (1) In this series of patients, there were 200 males and 133 females, aged from 2 to 84 years, with a median of 54 years. The benign to malignant ratio was 1.1:1. As for their origination, 144 tumors arose from the nasal cavity,

Undifferentiated sarcoma of the sphenoid sinus.

Paranasal sinuses sarcomas are rare and no treatments have been established. We report a young-adult case of sphenoid sinus sarcoma treated by carbon-ion radiotherapy. The patient presented with progressive left-sided visual impairment. A tumor was then identified and partial resection by transnasal approach was performed. The resected mass showed typical morphology of mesenchymal tumor, and morphological and molecular analyses ruled out a predominant-differentiation phenotype. The pathological diagnosis was undifferentiated sarcoma. The residual lesion was treated with carbon-ion radiotherapy

Sinus augmentation surgery after endoscopic sinus surgery for the treatment of chronic maxillary sinusitis: a case report.

Chronic sinusitis develops when the ostiomeatal complex becomes stenosed by the swelling of the sinus mucosa. Previously, the Caldwell-Luc method was performed for the treatment of chronic sinusitis. But postoperative complications, such as discomfort of the buccal skin and recurrence of sinusitis, frequently occurred after the operation. Today, endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) has become widely used for the treatment of chronic sinusitis. The features of ESS allow for the restoration of the physical function of the sinus membrane and preservation of the physiological environment of the sinus. T

Orbital passage of pterygopalatine ganglion efferents to paranasal sinuses and nasal mucosa in man.

Parasympathetic nerves of pterygopalatine ganglion origin are considered to enter the orbit and distribute to the nasal mucosa with the anterior ethmoidal nerve. As their distribution has never been demonstrated the present study was undertaken to seek evidence of their passage and to identify their relationship with the ethmoidal nerves. The soft tissues of the pterygopalatine fossa and orbit from sixteen sides of twelve cadavers were removed in one piece and either dissected or cut coronally into slabs and prepared histologically using montages of thin resin-embedded sections at intervals su
