A simple and sensitive technique for detection of strand breaks in DNA has been further developed. The method has been used to follow UV-induced excision-repair in human fibroblasts. It has been possible to study the kinetics of enzymic reactions in intact cells, in which strand breaks in DNA are produced and sealed again. PURPOSE: Anterior urethroplasty has been shown to negatively impact erectile function. Recovery of function is common but the likelihood and extent of recovery have not been fully elucidated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between October 2006 and May 2008 men undergoing anterior urethroplasty were enrolled in a prospective study to evaluate the effects of urethroplasty on erectile function. We report a case of a 46-year-old man who presented with recurrent lower urinary tract infections and obstructive voiding symptoms on the background of a proximal hypospadias repair at 4 years of age. A mass was later identified at his distal urethra, which on biopsy was found to be a penile squamous cell carcinoma. The lesion was excised en bloc, and at 10 months post-excision, the patient has no evidence of local or regional recurrence.
