We examined the histologic features of the posterior scleral foramen in 27 enucleated eyes (16 during autopsy and 11 with choroidal malignant melanoma). The histologic findings of the posterior scleral foramen were similar to those in previous reports. The shape of the scleral foramen was either cylindrical or truncated, the latter occurring when the inner margin of the sclera projected with a crest-like edge pressing into the optic nerve. During the period from March 1963 through March 1978, 30 patients with malignant neoplasms of the paranasal sinuses were treated with supervoltage technique at the University of Rochester Medical Center. We present a case of 100% third-degree burns. The patient received full resuscitative measures, but the family was prepared for a poor outcome based on the severe extent of the injuries. After several days of treatment, it became apparent that the patient indeed could not survive the injuries and palliative care was instituted, including mechanical ventilation, fluid therapy, and analgesia. Surgery was not possible without causing major disfigurement, including enucleation of both eyes and amputation of all limbs.

A 31-year-old intoxicated woman self-enucleated her left eye during an acute psychotic episode. CT revealed avulsion of the intracranial optic nerve, chiasmal edema, and adjacent subarachnoid hemorrhage. Exploration via transconjunctival orbitotomy was performed, and the globe and 4.8 cm of contiguous optic nerve were removed. The patient developed postoperative contralateral visual loss followed by middle cerebral artery vasospasm and bilateral cortical infarcts.

Senior-Loken syndrome is a rare hereditary disease that combines a disorder resembling familial juvenile nephronophthisis with retinitis pigmentosa. Retinitis pigmentosa is even less frequently associated with exudative retinopathy. The patient, a 15-year-old boy, had hereditary renal-retinal dystrophy combined with an exudative vasculopathy of the Coats' type. The patient is on thrice-weekly hemodialysis after two kidney transplants failed. One eye became painful and blind and was eventually enucleated.

Histopathologic changes occurred in a human eyeball enucleated 12 years after intravitreous silicone injection for the treatment of complicated retinal detachment with massive preretinal membrane. Silicone "bubbles" (droplets) were found in the chamber angle, iris, ciliary body, retina, and preretinal and subretinal membrane, as well as in the optic nerve. Clinically, glaucoma developed in the eye. A review of the literature indicates that the common late complications of intravitreous silicone injection are cataract, glaucoma, and retinal changes.

Our goal was to determine whether experimentally induced ametropias have an effect on lenticular accommodation and spherical aberration. Form-deprivation myopia and hyperopia were induced in one eye of hatchling chicks by application of a translucent goggle and +15 D lens, respectively. Nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infections are becoming an increasingly important complication in ophthalmology, particularly among immunocompromised patients. We report a case of NTM in a 66-year-old male immunosuppressed after cardiac transplantation. AIM: To review all cases of suspected vitreous seeding of treated or untreated uveal melanoma at our clinic and to compare clinical, cytological and histological findings with patients' survival.
METHODS: Retrospective non-randomised study of 23 patients with consecutive uveal melanoma who underwent diagnostic vitrectomy in our clinic between January 2000 and November 2013. Reason for vitrectomy was suspected dissemination of tumour cells inside the eye. Treated as well as treatment-naïve primary uveal melanomas were included in this study. Follow-up data of all patients were collected.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the histopathological changes of lens subcapsular epithelial proliferation and analyze their etiology.
METHODS: Sixty-four enucleated eyes with lens subcapsular epithelial proliferation were observed with light microscopy and analyzed retrospectively. Among all the cases of lens subcapsular epithelial proliferation, there were 36 ones enucleated because of trauma, 10 absolute glaucoma, 6 corneoscleral staphyloma, 5 intraocular tumor, 2 after cataract extraction, 4 endophthalmitis, 1 cataract combined with ocular atrophy (diabetes type II).

PURPOSE: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is associated with a worse systemic prognosis compared to methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA). Prior studies of MRSA and MSSA endophthalmitis group endogenous and exogenous cases.
