INTRODUCTION: Active trachoma is caused by chronic infection of the conjunctiva by Chlamydia trachomatis, and is the world's leading infectious cause of blindness. Infection can lead to: scarring of the tarsal conjunctiva; inversion of the eyelashes (trichiasis), so that they abrade the cornea; and corneal opacity, resulting in blindness. BACKGROUND: The prevalence of long-term trichiasis recurrence following tarsal rotation and electro-epilation procedures has not been determined. A non-concurrent prospective study of surgical cases of trichiasis was therefore undertaken in Oman.
METHODS: A sample of 603 surgical cases of trichiasis (approximately half tarsal rotation and half electro-epilation) was followed for an average of 3.1 years to determine recurrence. PURPOSE: To report a case series of penetrating injury complicated by occurrence of intraocular cilia.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of charts of 11 eyes of 11 patients with penetrating injury and intraocular cilia, presenting between September 1978 and November 1998. Ten eyes underwent surgery for trauma-related problems such as cataract, vitritis, retinal detachment etc., at which time intraocular cilia were removed. One eye did not have surgery and continues to harbour cilia at the posterior perforation site.

We present an extremely serious clinical case of Stevens-Johnson syndrome, the evolution of which has been followed for 3 years. The etiology was unknown, although it was related with the administration of amoxicillin. We found a type III immunity mechanism involving immune complexes. The serious complications affected the skin, mucosae and internal organs. The present sequelae are: esophageal stenosis, pneumopathy with a 50% deficit of pulmonary perfusion and bilateral trichiasis.
