A novel disintegrin salmosin inhibits tumor angiogenesis.

Salmosin is a snake venom-derived novel disintegrin that antagonizes platelet aggregation. In this study, we investigated its functional specificity in tumor angiogenesis. Salmosin significantly inhibited bovine capillary endothelial cell proliferation induced by basic fibroblast growth factor but had no effect on normal growth of the cell. The basic fibroblast growth factor-induced in vivo angiogenesis in the chorioallantoic membrane was disrupted by salmosin treatment without affecting normal embryonic angiogenesis. Adhesion of the bovine capillary endothelial cells to vitronectin was also i

Venous-to-arterial carbon-dioxide tension difference as a useful predictor of patient prognosis after major surgery.

PURPOSE: Change in venous-to-arterial carbon dioxide partial pressure difference[P(v-a)CO2] could be a useful marker to assess tissue perfusion status. Herein, we assessed the predictive values of postoperative P(v-a)CO2 measurements for mortality in critically ill patients after major surgery. The correlation between P(v-a)CO2 values and other conventional parameters of patient prognosis was also evaluated. METHODS: Patients admitted to the intensive care unit(ICU) after abdominal surgery were enrolled. Arterial and venous blood gas analyses were performed within 1 h(T0) and after 24 h(T1) o

The visceral pancreatic neck anterior distance may be an effective parameter to predict post-pancreaticoduodenectomy clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula.

BACKGROUND: The clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula (CR-POPF) is significantly correlated with a high post-pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) mortality rate. Several studies have reported an association between visceral obesity and CR-POPF. Nevertheless, there are many technical difficulties and controversies in the measurement of visceral fat. The aim of this research was to determine whether the visceral pancreatic neck anterior distance (V-PNAD) was a credible predictor for CR-POPF. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 216 patients who underwent PD in our center betw

Precisely Controlling Csr sRNA Levels by MshH Enhances Vibrio cholerae Colonization in Adult Mice.

Vibrio cholerae is the causative agent of cholera. Effective intestinal colonization is a key step for V. cholerae pathogenicity and transmission. In this study, we found that deleting mshH, a homolog of the Escherichia coli CsrD protein, caused a V. cholerae colonization defect in the intestine of adult mice. By analyzing the RNA levels of CsrB, CsrC, and CsrD, we found that deleting mshH increased the levels of CsrB and CsrD but decreased the level of CsrC. However, deleting CsrB and -D not only recovered the mshH deletion mutant colonization defect but also recovered CsrC to wild-type level

Factors influencing injury severity to belted drivers in car crashes in India.

OBJECTIVE: The 2019 revised Indian seat belt regulation resulted in a significant increase in driver belt use. This study examines the factors influencing Maximum Abbreviated Injury Scale (MAIS) 2+ injuries to belted car drivers using Indian crash data. METHODS: Crash data obtained from Road Accident Sampling System-India (RASSI; 2011 to 2020) were used. Analysis was performed on a sample of 662 belted car drivers, representing 1.7 million drivers nationally. Survey logistic regression was used to identify factors influencing the odds of MAIS 2+ injuries to belted car drivers. Factors includi

The risk of venous thromboembolism in oral contraceptive users: the role of genetic factors-a prospective cohort study of 240,000 women in the UK Biobank.

BACKGROUND: More than 150 million women worldwide use oral contraceptives. Women with inherited thrombophilia and carriers of certain thrombophilia gene variants, such as factor V Leiden and the prothrombin, are at an increased risk for venous thromboembolism, especially when combined with oral contraceptive use. Venous thromboembolism is a complex disorder involving many genetic risk factors, and recently, polygenic risk scores have been proposed to capture a significant proportion of the genetic risk of venous thromboembolism. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to estimate the risk for de…

New Insights into Hepatic and Intestinal Microcirculation and Pulmonary Inflammation in a Model of Septic Shock and Veno-Arterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation in the Rat.

Despite significant efforts toward improving therapy for septic shock, mortality remains high. Applying veno-arterial (V-A) extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in this context remains controversial. Since the cannulation of the femoral artery for V-A ECMO return leads to lower body hyperoxia, this study investigated the impact of V-A ECMO therapy on the intestinal and hepatic microcirculation during septic shock in a rodent model. Thirty male Lewis rats were randomly assigned to receive V-A ECMO therapy with low (60 mL/kg/min) or high (90 mL/kg/min) blood flow or a sham procedure. Hemod

Studies of the g factors of the ground 4A2 and the first excited 2E state of Cr3+ ions in emerald.

By using complete diagonalization method, the zero-field splitting and g factors of the ground 4A2 and the first excited 2E states of Cr3+ ions in emerald are calculated. The theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental data. The dependencies of the g factors on the crystal field parameters, including Dq, v, and v', have been studied. It is shown that, the g factors of the ground state varied with the crystal field parameters approximately in a linear way, but the g factors of the first excited state varied nonlinearly with these parameters.

Cellular Response of Ventricular-Subventricular Neural Progenitor/Stem Cells to Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Brain Injury and Their Enhanced Neurogenesis.

PURPOSE: To elucidate the brain's intrinsic response to injury, we tracked the response of neural stem/progenitor cells (NSPCs) located in ventricular-subventricular zone (V-SVZ) to hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HI). We also evaluated whether transduction of V-SVZ NSPCs with neurogenic factor NeuroD1 could enhance their neurogenesis in HI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Unilateral HI was induced in ICR neonatal mice. To label proliferative V-SVZ NSPCs in response to HI, bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) and retroviral particles encoding LacZ or NeuroD1/GFP were injected. The cellular responses of NSPCs were

Recurrent pseudotumor cerebri in childhood: a case of neuro-Behçet disease complicated with thrombotic risk factors.

Pseudotumor cerebri with or without venous sinus thrombosis is a rare clinical presentation of Behçet disease in childhood. We present here a case of childhood pseudotumor cerebri without a previous diagnosis of Behçet disease. The detailed history and physical examination of the case led to the diagnosis of neuro-Behçet disease. The investigation of predisposition to thrombosis revealed heterozygous factor V Leiden mutation along with the high lipoprotein(a) level. The symptoms resolved dramatically by treatment with the combination of immunosuppression and anticoagulation with regard to the …

Prothrombotic profile in children with peripheral gangrene: a single center experience.

Peripheral gangrene is rare in children. Protein C, protein S, and antithrombin deficiency, positivity for anticardiolipin antibodies or lupus anticoagulant and factor V Leiden mutation are important causes of thrombosis in the venous system. There is paucity of literature on the contribution of these factors in children with peripheral gangrene. We evaluated the role of aforementioned factors in children with peripheral gangrene. Protein S deficiency was seen in one case and another was transiently positive for lupus anticoagulant. None of the 11 age- and sex-matched normal controls had prote…

Absence of congenital prethrombotic disorders in children with Legg-Perthes disease.

Resistance to activated protein C (RPCA) and other congenital prethrombotic disorders have been recently reported to be strongly associated with Legg-Perthes disease. RPCA and deficiencies of protein C, protein S, and antithrombin III were sought in 22 children with Legg-Perthes disease. Detection of the factor V Leiden mutation was found in children with RPCA. Twenty-two healthy children paired by age and sex served as controls. The prevalence of congenital prethrombotic disorders was not found to differ significantly among patients with Legg-Perthes disease and among control subjects. Only o…

Induced chronic intravascular coagulation in dogs.

When an emulsion of dog brain thromboplastin was infused continuously into dogs for 1--4 weeks only platelets and factor XI were consistently depressed. The remaining clotting factors fell in a dose-dependent fashion but there was a tendency toward recovery despite continued infusion of thromboplastin. Fibrinogen and factor V were unique in that with weaker emulsions of thromboplastin, they often rose without a preliminary fall.

Neonatal hypertension. Incidence and risk factors.

To determine the incidence and risk factors for neonatal hypertension we studied the entire population of 3179 infants admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit over a 6-year period. We report a 0.81% (26/3179) incidence of hypertension in this population. In 13 patients (50%) the hypertension was renal in origin. In four patients (15.4%), the etiology of hypertension could not be determined. Significant risk factors for neonatal hypertension included: bronchopulmonary dysplasia (5.9% in affected infants v 0.5% in unaffected infants, P less than .001); patent ductus arteriosus (3.07% in aff

The relationship between symptoms and regurgitant severity in primary mitral regurgitation: a cardiovascular magnetic resonance study.

In the ACC/AHA guidelines, the presence of symptoms plays a central role in determining timing surgery in primary mitral regurgitation (MR). Studies have shown a disconnect between the severity of MR and symptoms. The purpose of this study is to assess risk factors for symptoms in patients with chronic primary MR. There were 430 patients with degenerative MR and preserved left ventricular function who underwent cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR). MR volume (MRV) and MR fraction (MRF) were categorized as per the ACC/AHA guidelines. Patients were divided into three groups based on category

Proteomic analysis of Pseudomonas putida reveals an organic solvent tolerance-related gene mmsB.

Organic solvents are toxic to most microorganisms. However, some organic-solvent-tolerant (OST) bacteria tolerate the destructive effects of organic solvent through various accommodative mechanisms. In this work, we developed an OST adapted strain Pseudomonas putida JUCT1 that could grow in the presence of 60% (v/v) cyclohexane. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis was used to compare and analyze the total cellular protein of P. putida JUCT1 growing with or without 60% (v/v) cyclohexane. Under different solvent conditions, five high-abundance protein spots whose intensity values show over 60% d

Prognostic usage of V(H) gene mutation status and its surrogate markers and the role of antigen selection in chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a clinically heterogeneous disease with many patients surviving for decades with minimal or no treatment, whereas others succumb rapidly to their disease despite therapy. In recent years, new molecular prognostic factors have emerged in CLL that have significantly improved the subgrouping of the disease. One of the most important molecular predictors, the immunoglobulin V(H) gene mutation status, divides CLL into two prognostic groups, depending on the presence or absence of somatic hypermutation, where unmutated V(H) genes are associated with consi
