Presence of red foxes and contamination with Echinococcus multilocularis on soft fruit farms in Limburg, the Netherlands.

Echinococcus multilocularis (fox tapeworm), with the red fox as the main definitive host, is a major foodborne parasite in Europe and is emerging in the Netherlands. While wild berry consumption is often communicated as a risk factor for foodborne E. multilocularis infection, contamination of commercially grown soft fruits remains poorly studied. This study assessed fox presence and E. multilocularis contamination on commercial soft fruit farms in Limburg, an endemic area in the Netherlands. During the 2024 harvest season (June-August), 220 soft fruit and 220 soil samples were collected on 22 …

A One Health comparative genomic assessment of antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia coli in dairy farms in western Canada.

UNLABELLED: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global public health concern affecting animals, humans, and the environment. Given its ubiquity, Escherichia coli may play a key role in the dissemination of AMR across these domains. Peri-urban regions where urban and rural systems intersect present unique challenges for controlling AMR. Despite this, limited data are available on AMR dissemination across the One Health continuum in peri-urban settings such as the Fraser Valley region of Canada. This study adopted a One Health approach to assess associations in AMR traits between E. coli

Molecular detection of antibiotic resistance genes in Staphylococcus aureus isolated from poultry farms of Kathmandu Valley, Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as a critical global health challenge and is currently addressed through a "One Health" approach that investigates its occurrence in humans, animals, and the environment, as well as the transmission pathways linking these reservoirs. In commercial poultry farms, antibiotics are routinely used to treat bacterial infections that are economically significant as well as to promote weight gain. However, data on AMR in Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) of poultry origin remain scarce in Nepal. Antimicrobial resistance in S aureus, particularly t…

Assessment of microbial community changes in seawater of marine cage- culture large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) farms.

Microbial communities in aquaculture seawater are fundamental to ecosystem stability and health, serving as critical indicators of environmental change. However, the specific impacts of large-scale marine cage culture on these planktonic communities remain poorly understood. Using 16S and 18S rRNA sequencing, we assessed prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities in seawater from nearshore and offshore large yellow croaker farms, as well as a non-farmed site on Nanji Island, China. Our analysis revealed ecologically notable taxonomic and functional trends, despite overall community composition sho…

Temperature tolerance and persistence of promising native Metarhizium isolates for use in chili pepper farms in Ghana.

Ghanaian chili pepper exports are subject to stringent regulations on pesticide residues in significant foreign markets. Therefore, safer pest management options are needed to supplement current non-chemical control techniques, especially for controlling Thaumatotibia leucotreta Meyrick (False codling moth, FCM), an important phytosanitary pest. A national survey was initiated in 2023 to identify native entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) from Ghanaian farms. Seven Metarhizium isolates were recovered from soils and induced substantial mortalities of soil-residing final-instar stages of FCM in vitro. …

Within-species phenotypic resistance rather than community turnover tracks antimicrobial usage in Staphylococcus aureus on swine farms.

Bioaerosol-mediated transfer of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria from swine farms to workers represents a poorly quantified occupational hazard. Whether farm-level antimicrobial usage track resistance through community-level taxonomic turnover or through within-species phenotypic differences remains unclear. Existing occupational risk assessments also lack phenotypic resistance resolution and corrections for microbial viability. Here, we performed antimicrobial susceptibility testing of 962 isolates across six species from six Korean swine farms stratified by defined daily dose for animals (DD…

Prevalence and transmission patterns of Mycoplasma bovis in comingled Holstein dairy heifers from two different parent farms.

BACKGROUND: Mycoplasma bovis probably enters dairy herds when carrier animals are introduced. Comingled calves that become subclinical M. bovis carriers could promote cross-dairy transmission. A prospective cohort study in Holstein heifers from two unrelated herds (Farms A and B previously M. bovis positive and negative, respectively) comingled at a facility raising only their calves assessed: 1). prevalence of asymptomatic M. bovis infection; 2). associations between four anatomic sites (nares, eyes, ear canal, vagina; M. bovis culture with PCR confirmation). Fifteen calves per farm were enro…

Flexible assessment of biosecurity in small- and medium scale poultry farms in low and middle income countries.

BACKGROUND: Biosecurity measures are essential for mitigating the risk of pathogen introduction and spread in farms. While standardised tools for monitoring biosecurity implementation exist, they are often not tailored to the specific needs of low and middle income countries (LMICs), where pathogen occurrence and farming practices can be highly variable compared to intensive high income country settings. The aim of our study was to develop a flexible risk assessment tool for evaluating biosecurity practices on small and medium-scale poultry farms in LMICs. The methodology described here allows…

Antimicrobial resistance and prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Klebsiella species in East Tennessee dairy farms.

UNLABELLED: Klebsiella species commonly reside in dairy cattle guts and are consistently exposed to beta-lactam antibiotics, including ceftiofur, which are frequently used on the U.S. dairy farms. This may impose selection pressure and result in the emergence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing strains. However, information on the status and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profile of ESBL-Klebsiella spp. in the U.S. dairy farms is largely unknown. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and AMR profile of ESBL-Klebsiella spp. and the factors affecting their occurrence in d…
