The retinoid-related orphan receptor alpha (RORA) gene and fear-related psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: This study followed on findings from a recent genome-wide association study of PTSD that implicated the retinoid-related orphan receptor alpha (RORA) gene (Logue et al., 2012) by examining its relationship to broader array of disorders. METHODS: Using data from the same cohort (N=540), we analyzed patterns of association between 606 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) spanning the RORA gene and comorbidity factors termed fear, distress (i.e., internalizing factors) and externalizing. RESULTS: Results showed that rs17303244 was associated with the fear component of internalizin…

Fear of blood draws, vasovagal reactions, and retention among high school donors.

BACKGROUND: We previously demonstrated that fear of having blood drawn is one of the strongest known predictors of vasovagal reactions among high school blood donors. This report examines the combined effects of donor fear and experience of vasovagal reactions on repeat donation attempts among high school blood donors. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Immediately after completing the blood donor health screening, 1715 high school students were asked about their fear of having blood drawn. The donor record was then used to collect information regarding their experience of vasovagal reactions at the t…

Experimental modification of interpretation bias regarding social and animal fear in children.

Using an experimental bias modification task, an interpretation bias towards or away from threat was induced about animal or social situatio … ng particularly vulnerable to acquiring biases about stimuli that were congruent with the normative fears for their age group. Weak age-related modification-congruent effects on younger but not older children's anxiety vulnerability in response to a behavioral task were also observed. However, no consistent effects of bias modification on avoidance beh …

Nicotine withdrawal exacerbates fear reactivity to CO₂-induced bodily sensations among smokers.

INTRODUCTION: Independent lines of research suggest that smoking increases the prospective risk of panic disorder. Studies that have examined the hypothesized link between nicotine withdrawal and panic have typically employed light smokers or lacked optimal control groups. Our laboratory team previously found, for example, that smokers who abstained from cigarettes for 12 hr demonstrated greater fear reactivity to a CO(2) rebreathing challenge than nonsmokers. However, the absence of a smoking-as-usual group limited our ability to draw conclusions about the potential role of nicotine withdrawa…

Does 'Yuck' mean 'Eek'? Fear responses in children after a disgust manipulation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Disgust is a basic emotion that is thought to play a role in the development of animal phobias. This study was conducted to test whether experimentally induced disgust also results in higher levels of fear and interpretation bias. METHODS: Children aged 9-13 years (N=94) were asked to inspect a set of specimen characteristic of a novel animal and requested to form themselves an impression of it based on those characteristics. Half of the children were given a set of disgust-eliciting products in relation to the animal, whereas the other half received a set of neutra…

Cross-national measure of fear-based xenophobia: development of a cumulative scale.

To apply a Mokken Scale Procedure in developing a hierarchical cross-national scale to measure xenophobia, a pool of 30 xenophobia-related items was collected from several sources and modified using established unidimensional criteria. The survey was administered to 608 undergraduate students in the USA, 193 undergraduate students in The Netherlands, and 303 undergraduate students in Norway. 14 items measuring perceived threat or fear and meeting the criteria of the Stereotype Content Model were selected for further analysis. A separate item analysis and, subsequently, Mokken Scale Procedure y…

Amygdalar hyperactivity, a fear-related link between panic disorder and mesiotemporal epilepsy.

The sudden onset, short duration and stereotyped features of panic attacks, and the fear aura of seizures starting at the mesial aspects of the temporal lobe, suggest common mechanisms underlying panic disorder (PD) and mesiotemporal epilepsy (MTLE). However, current consensus emphasizes the importance of differentiating the two entities based on 1) intact consciousness in panic attacks, 2) poor response to antiepileptics, and 3) unsuccessful electrophysiological attempts to demonstrate a relationship. We report two cases with a diagnosis of PD that had been partially responsive to first line …

Unique affective and cognitive processes in contamination appraisals: Implications for contamination fear.

A large body of evidence suggests an important role of disgust in contamination fear (CF). A separate line of research implicates various cognitive mechanisms in contamination fear, including obsessive beliefs, memory biases, and delayed attentional disengagement from threat. This study is an initial attempt to integrate these two lines of research and examines whether disgust and delayed attention disengagement from threat explain unique or overlapping processes within CF. Non-clinical undergraduate students (N = 108) completed a spatial cueing task, which provided measures of delayed disenga…

Socioeconomic status influences the relationship between fear-avoidance beliefs work and disability.

OBJECTIVE: Biopsychosocial models are currently accepted for study of low back pain (LBP), but there is little evidence investigating socioeconomic status (SES) influence on disability, pain intensity, and physical impairment. The present study examined SES (income and education) and fear-avoidance model (fear-avoidance beliefs and pain catastrophizing) for their influence on disability, pain intensity and physical impairment. DESIGN: Cohort study, where patients (n = 108) were referred to physical therapy for treatment of acute or sub-acute LBP and completed standard questionnaires. RESULTS…

How do we measure dental fear and what are we measuring anyway?

Dental anxiety shares similar characteristics with many clinical anxiety disorders, and this is especially the case with other specific fears and phobias. These often debilitating conditions comprise several different dimensions, including cognitive, emotional, behavioural and physiological components. In addition, dental anxiety and fear are associated with a range of aversive health consequences. A number of indices have been developed to measure dental anxiety and fear, but their sheer number is indicative of a continuing problem with delineating the concept of dental fear and anxiety and h…

Fear potentiation is associated with hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function in PTSD.

A central problem in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the inability to suppress fear under safe conditions. We have previously shown that PTSD patients cannot inhibit conditioned fear. Another relevant finding in PTSD is the hypersensitivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis feedback. Given their common neurobiological pathways, alterations in HPA function in PTSD may be associated with impaired fear inhibition. The present study examined the relationship between HPA axis function and fear-potentiated startle and inhibition of conditioned fear in trauma-exposed individual…

Individuals at risk for Huntington disease who pursued genetic testing feared losing medical insurance, and many paid out of pocket for medical services. Alleviating the fear of health insurance loss may help those who want to pursue genetic testing for many other conditions. [ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT0052143].

Developmental emergence of fear learning corresponds with changes in amygdala synaptic plasticity.

Mother-infant attachment is facilitated in altricial rodents through unique neural mechanisms that include impaired neonatal fear conditioning until the time that pups first begin to leave the nest (sensitive period). Here, we confirmed the developmental emergence of odor fear conditioning in neonatal rat pups, and examined synaptic plasticity of inputs to the basolateral amygdala in vitro. Coronal slices through the amygdala were obtained from sensitive (<10 days) and post-sensitive (>10, <19 days) period pups. Field potentials were recorded in the basolateral amygdala in response to stimulat…

Perceptions of athletic competence and fear of negative evaluation during physical education.

BACKGROUND: Physical education (PE) aims to enhance self-esteem, develop sporting interests and to encourage a physically active life-style. However, little is known about how a fear of negative evaluation (FNE), the socially evaluative aspect of social anxiety, affects children's attitudes to PE. AIM: The aim of the study was to investigate the relationships between perceived athletic competence and FNE within PE lessons, specifically looking at differences between boys and girls and primary and secondary schools. SAMPLE: The participants were 192 children in three primary schools (N=85, me…

Social anxiety symptoms uniquely predict fear responding to 35% CO(2) challenge.

The vast majority of biological challenge studies have focused on panic disorder though there is a small literature suggesting that patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) show comparable responding. The SAD literature is potentially confounded, however, by the fact that many patients with SAD experience panic attacks. These patients also show elevated negative affect and anxiety sensitivity, factors that are also associated with increased fear responding to challenge. By controlling for these factors, the present report was able to evaluate whether social anxiety symptoms were uniquely as…

Elevated fear conditioning to socially relevant unconditioned stimuli in social anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Though conditioned fear has long been acknowledged as an important etiologic mechanism in social anxiety disorder, past psychophysiological experiments have found no differences in general conditionability among social anxiety patients using generally aversive but socially nonspecific unconditioned stimuli (e.g., unpleasant odors and painful pressure). The authors applied a novel fear conditioning paradigm consisting of socially relevant unconditioned stimuli of critical facial expressions and verbal feedback. This study represents the first effort to assess the conditioning correla…

Fear-relevant selective associations and social anxiety: absence of a positive bias.

An illusory correlation paradigm was used to compare high and low socially anxious individuals' initial, on-line and a posteriori covariation estimates between emotional faces and aversive, pleasant and neutral outcomes. Overall, participants demonstrated an initial expectancy bias for aversive outcomes following angry faces, and pleasant outcomes following happy faces. On-line expectancy biases indicated that initial biases were extinguished during the task, with the exception of low socially anxious individuals who continued to over-associate positive social cues with pleasant outcomes. Evaluating implicit spider fear associations using the Go/No-go Association Task.

The Go/No-go association task (GNAT) [Nosek, B.A., & Banaji, M.R. (2001). The Go/No-go Association Task. Social Cognition, 19, 625-666], which measures automatic associations in memory, was administered to participants who were high (N=17) versus low (N=17) in spider fear along with other established fear measures to validate the tool as a proxy measure for fear schemata. The GNAT involves participants classifying stimuli into superordinate categories and looking at speed of categorization when categories match, versus contradict, participants' hypothesized implicit fear associations. The effects of verbal information on children's fear beliefs about social situations.

Two experiments explored the role of verbal information in changing children's fear-related beliefs about social situations. In Experiment 1, 118 6- to 8- and 12- to 13-year-olds heard positive, negative, or no information about individuals' experiences of three social situations. Fear beliefs regarding each situation were assessed before and after this manipulation. Verbal information had no significant influence on children's fear beliefs. In Experiment 2, the same paradigm was used with 80 12- to 13-year-olds, but the information took the form of multiple attitude statements about the situa…

Early life stress impairs fear conditioning in adult male and female rats.

We demonstrated that neonatal isolation (1-h pup isolation; postnatal days 2-9) impairs context-induced fear conditioning in adult male rats and tends to enhance this effect and foot shock sensitivity in females. In this study, we examine the effects of brief (i.e., handling; 15 min) and prolonged (3 h) maternal separations (postnatal days 1-21) on fear conditioning and foot shock sensitivity in adult male and female rats. Identical training and test conditions from our prior study were employed so comparisons of the three early life stressors could be made. Context- and cue-elicited freezing …
