The objective of this study is to assess anxiety and chronic stress in fast- and slow-growing broilers when housed with a hut or platform enrichment. We obtained 264 day-old chicks each of Cobb 500, Ross 308, and Ross 708, Redbro-Yield, Redbro M, and Ja57NH strains, and placed them by strain across 72 pens (22 birds/pen) with an A-frame hut or a perforated platform with ramps. Anxiety was assessed via the attention bias test (proportion of birds feeding, vigilance), and chronic stress was assessed through feather corticosterone (fCORT) and secretory immunoglobulin-A (SIgA) concentrations in ex

INTRODUCTION: Duck circovirus (DuCV) is an emerging immunosuppressive virus that causes growth retardation, feather loss, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections in ducks, leading to significant economic losses in the duck industry. However, existing serological assays for DuCV detection often lack accuracy and reproducibility due to antigen instability, limiting effective disease surveillance.
METHODS: To develop a more reliable diagnostic tool, the full-length capsid (Cap) gene of DuCV-2 was codon-optimized, expressed in Escherichia coli, purified under denaturing conditions, a

Quail meat is favored by consumers because of its low fat and cholesterol contents. In this study, the differences in carcass traits, meat quality, serum biochemical profiles, amino acid and fatty acid profiles, and cecal microbiota among Chinese white feather quail (CWQ), Savimalt meat quail (SMQ), and French giant quail (FGQ) were systematically evaluated. The results revealed that the FGQ and SMQ exhibited significantly greater body weight, carcass weight, and breast muscle weight than the CWQ did (P < 0.05). In addition, the CWQ showed greater lightness (L*) and shear force, whereas the FG

Elevated corticosterone levels resulting from chronic stress impair metabolic balance in broilers, frequently culminating in lipid dysregulation. While bile acids (BAs) are essential for managing lipid metabolism, how chronic stress alters BA dynamics and drives metabolic failure across the gut-liver axis is not fully understood. To address this, we developed a chronic corticosterone-exposure model in broilers (divided into control and stressed groups) to mimic prolonged stress. We evaluated temporal changes across two zeitgeber time (ZT) points (ZT2 and ZT14) using transcriptomics for both th

Testicular tumors are rarely reported in passerine birds and are typically described as isolated cases. This study characterizes the clinical, pathological, immunohistochemical, and epidemiological features of 13 testicular neoplasms diagnosed in ultramarine grosbeaks (Cyanoloxia brissonii; n = 12) and a green-winged saltator (Saltator similis; n = 1), 2 South American passerine species commonly used in singing competitions. Clinical signs included coelomic distension, respiratory distress, pododermatitis, feather loss, cloacal prolapse, and decreased vocalization. Radiography demonstrated dis

The intestinal microbiome is essential in regulating host muscle growth and development. Antibiotic treatment is commonly used to model dysbiosis of the intestinal microbiota, yet limited research addresses the relationship between gut microbes and muscle growth in yellow-feathered broilers. In this study, Xinghua chickens were administered broad-spectrum antibiotics for eight weeks to induce gut microbiome suppression. We investigated the relationships between the gut microbiome and muscle growth using 16S rRNA sequencing and transcriptomic analysis. Results indicated that antibiotic treatmen

The annual molt, when penguins replace their entire plumage within a short period while fasting ashore, is the energetically most challenging period of their annual cycle. During molt, king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) lose most of their insulating subcutaneous fat and half of their pectoral muscle mass. Such massive changes might impact their physiological capacity during deep foraging dives of their post-molt trip, when they need to recover body reserves for the upcoming breeding season. In immature king penguins, the dive/foraging performance following molt is significantly altered, s

Immune stress is a major challenge in the poultry industry, impairing growth, liver metabolism, and intestinal health. This study investigated whether dietary sodium butyrate (NaBu) could alleviate lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced immune stress in yellow-feathered broilers through modulation of the gut-liver axis. A total of 96 male broilers were assigned to a 2 × 2 factorial design with NaBu supplementation and LPS challenge as the main factors. Results showed that NaBu significantly improved growth performance, as reflected by increased average daily gain and average daily feed intake (P < 0

This work reviews the influence of production systems, strain and age of laying hens on keel bone damages (KBDs) with the subsequent welfare implications and production losses. Damages to the keel bone are influenced to a greater extent by the type of production system and its complexity. Hens housed in cage-free production systems are more likely to have a higher prevalence of this pathological condition than hens housed in cages. The aviaries, especially multi-tier, are more associated with this pathological condition. Clumsy ascents or descents from perches and collisions during flight with

This study tested pumpkin seeds (Cucurbita spp.) against OTA toxicity in broilers. One hundred forty chicks were divided into seven groups: control, OTA (400 ppb), PS (200 or 400 mg/kg), OTA + PS (200 or 400 mg/kg), and OTA + commercial binder. Broilers fed OTA-contaminated diets showed a 37 % reduction in feed intake and 32 % decrease in body weight gain compared to control. Birds also exhibited clinical deterioration, with weekly clinical scores declining from 12 in controls to 6 in the OTA group by week 5, reflecting reduced activity, watery feces, and poor feathering. OTA suppressed humora

Decalobanthus peltatus is a woody vine that is commonly utilized in traditional Southeast Asian medicinal preparations. Despite the documented therapeutic uses of D. peltatus, there is hardly any information regarding its toxic effects on its consumers. In this study, crude leaf extracts (aqueous, methanol, ethyl acetate, and hexane) from D. peltatus were prepared and evaluated for their embryotoxicity and teratogenic effects. Phytochemical screening of bioactive compounds from the plants showed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids, and tannins. In addition, investigations

Bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) populations are declining worldwide primarily due to anthropogenic factors. A captive breeding program has been established in Spain, a country with one of the largest free-living populations in Europe, to further enhance the conservation efforts of this emblematic species. However, captive vulture populations can be exposed to different risks through food, such as drug residues and antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacteria. Health surveillance of species involved in captive breeding programs is important to face introduction of healthy animals in situ and to o

Birds may act as hosts for numerous pathogens, including members of the family Chlamydiaceae, beak and feather disease virus (BFDV), avipoxviruses, Columbid alphaherpesvirus 1 (CoAHV1) and Psittacid alphaherpesvirus 1 (PsAHV1), all of which are a significant biosecurity concern in Australia. While Chlamydiaceae and BFDV have previously been detected in Australian avian taxa, the prevalence and host range of avipoxviruses, CoAHV1 and PsAHV1 in Australian birds remain undetermined. To better understand the occurrence of these pathogens, we screened 486 wild birds (kingfisher, parrot, pigeon and
