In 1997, two years after the last epidemic peak of scarlet fever, the speed of decrease of the number of registered cases has been slower than after earlier epidemics. However, the seasonal distribution of cases does not forecast an increase of incidence of scarlet fever in the near future. The age, sex, urban/rural distribution of scarlet fever remain stable. The highest incidence rates are noted in 7-8-year old children. Scarlet fever cases are hospitalized in 1%.

Virus zoonoses causing haemorrhagic fever have been recognized in three major families: Arenaviridae, Bunyaviridae and Filoviridae. All are negative-stranded RNA viruses, with genomes in two segments, three segments, or non-segmented, respectively. Acquisition of haemorrhagic fever in man generally requires close contact with a vertebrate vector species, usually rodents, for the arenaviruses and bunyaviruses. In the case of filoviruses, the vector is currently unknown, but these viruses may infect monkeys, and may contaminate cell cultures prepared from them. Both bunyavirus and arenavirus hae…

We describe a case of acute symptomatic infection with Coxiella burnetii acquired between the 16th and 28th week of pregnancy. Oral ciprofloxacin therapy was started on diagnosis, at the 28th week of pregnancy, but symptoms were unabated after 3 weeks treatment, suggesting persisting infection of the products of conception. Caesarean section was therefore performed at 32 weeks gestation when a healthy infant was delivered, and subsequent investigations showed no evidence of transplacental spread of infection. Infection control measures were applied at the time of delivery to minimize the risk

In the sense that the brain houses the central mechanism for the regulation of body temperature, almost all illnesses that cause fever must interact with the central nervous system. There are far fewer diseases, however, in which the nervous system symptomatology is of prime diagnostic importance. A helpful way to view fever in association with neurologic disease is to roughly divide these disease entities into four broad categories: (1) neurologic impairment resulting from fever itself, (2) fever as the sole manifestation of a central nervous system infection, (3) systemic febrile disorders w…

During a four-year period, 86 children with fever lasting for at least 6 days without diagnosis at admission after initial physical examination and preliminary laboratory tests were included in a retrospective analysis. Their ages ranged from 2 months to 16 years, and there were 55 males and 31 females. Bacterial infections occurred in 19 patients (22%), viral infections in 17 (20%), mycoplasmal infections in 3 and malaria in 1. Collagen vascular diseases were diagnosed in 13 children (15%), including 7 juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and 5 systemic lupus erythematosus. Thirteen children (15%) h…
