Latent Heterogeneity in the Impact of Financial Coaching on Delay Discounting among Low-Income Smokers: A Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

Low-income adults are significantly more likely to smoke, and face more difficulty in quitting, than people with high income. High rates of delay discounting (DD) may be an important factor contributing to the high rates of tobacco use among low-income adults. Future-oriented financial coaching may offer a novel approach in the treatment of smoking cessation among low-income adults. This secondary analysis (N = 251) of data from a randomized controlled trial examined the integration of future-oriented financial coaching into smoking cessation treatment for low-income smokers. Linear regression

Support services for rural women micro-entrepreneurs in Bangladesh: a sectoral comparison.

INTRODUCTION: Existing studies emphasize microcredit's role in women's entrepreneurship but often overlook other forms of support such as training and support services influencing sustainability and income growth. Furthermore, research exploring sectoral differences in the effects of these types of assistance has been insufficient. This paper analyzes the effects of training and support services on women's micro-enterprises in rural Bangladesh and compares the differential effects in three sectors. METHODS: A mixed-methods approach was used. A field survey was conducted with 170 randomly sele

Providers' assessment of barriers to effective management of hypertension and hyperlipidemia in community health centers.

We explored 251 providers' (47% licensed practical nurses, 27% registered nurses, 10% physicians, 10% physician assistants, 6% other) perceptions of barriers to effective management of hypertension and hyperlipidemia from 72 Midwest community health centers (CHCs). Optimal care for these diseases is difficult in any setting; little is known about the specific barriers CHCs face. Community health centers often have a multidisciplinary team that participates in patient care. Current models of quality improvement and chronic care management require virtually all CHC providers to know clinical gui

Overcoming barriers to sustainable agricultural intensification.

Sustainably closing agricultural yield gaps remains a central challenge for advancing global food security while conserving biodiversity. This article develops a theoretical perspective on why sustainable intensification (SI) is limited in many lower-income countries, despite the technological feasibility of improving yields in these places. It explores these constraints to SI through two case studies of expanding commodity frontiers: (i) beef in the Brazilian Amazon and Cerrado and (ii) cocoa in West Africa. We find similar barriers to SI across the cases, including limited tenurial, financia

Research sustainability: Lessons and opportunities for global biomedical research institutions.

Biomedical research and development (R&D) remains universally underinvested, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), despite LMIC investigators' significant scientific contributions. To address these challenges, various approaches aim to empower individuals and institutions to generate R&D within this ecosystem. However, limitations within these approaches persist, most notably their focus on individual capacity building and lack of a systems approach that adequately incorporates science management and operations. Considering the successes and gaps in the field, we propose resea

MRI workflow efficiency: Economic constraints, operational bottlenecks, and technological innovation.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an essential diagnostic modality valued for its superior soft tissue characterization, yet it remains among the most resource-intensive in clinical radiology. Financial sustainability is increasingly challenged by high capital and fixed operational costs, rising labor and maintenance expenses, workflow inefficiencies, and constrained reimbursements amid growing demand. This review synthesizes recent literature to highlight key strategies for optimizing MRI workflow efficiency across economic, operational, and technological domains. Critical approaches includ

A multidimensional framework for mapping social need to electronic health records in people with multimorbidity.

Social needs are sociocultural and economic factors influencing health and quality of life, including, for example, mobility limitations or financial difficulties. Multimorbidity - the presence of two or more long-term conditions (LTCs) - is an increasing public health challenge, with social needs often compounding the negative health outcomes associated with multimorbidity. In this study, we present a novel multidimensional framework for identifying and characterising social needs within a population-based cohort of adults with multimorbidity in England, utilising data from the Clinical Pract

"We Had No Better Choice": Early and Prolonged Parent-Child Separation in Chinese Immigrant Families.

The present study aimed to understand the reasons for early and prolonged parent-child separation and its impacts among separated-reunited Chinese immigrant families. Chinese dual-earner immigrant parents, especially low-income families, are likely to send their newborns back to China to be raised by their extended families. Prior research has not yet sufficiently investigated the reasons for separation and how affected families perceive the benefits and costs, especially among those who have reunited years after separation. Based on one-on-one qualitative interviews (N = 48 in 24 parent-child
