Medical Response and Factors Leading to Violent Death in the United States Incarcerated Population.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to characterize trauma-associated deaths in the United States prison system. We hypothesize that incarcerated vi … he incarcerated compared to the non-incarcerated population, but the opposite was true of homicide. Firearms were more commonly used in the non-incarcerated population. After Propensity score matching, we found that incarcerated victims received higher levels of medical care following suicide (P < 0.001) while there was no difference for homicide (P = 0.28 …

Post-mortem analysis of gunshot wounds to the head and thorax in dogs by computed tomography, radiography and forensic necropsy.

In view of the scarcity of literature data on the use of radiological imaging techniques in forensic veterinary medicine, while at the same time the number of reported crimes against animals involving the use of firearms is rising, this paper attempts to assess the usefulness of radiography and computed tomography (CT) in the post-mortem diagnosis of gunshot wounds (GSW) in comparison to classic necropsy. The design of the experiment was as follows: preparation of the research material (13 dog carcasses), shooting of the material from different distances (1.5 and 12 m, plus one contact shot to…

Evaluation of the backspatter generation and wound profiles of an anatomically correct skull model for molecular ballistics.

Molecular ballistics connects the molecular genetic analysis of biological traces with the wounding events and complex forensic traces investigated in terminal ballistics. Backspatter, which originates from a projectile hitting a biological target when blood and/or tissue is propelled back into the direction of the gun, is of particular interest; those traces can consolidate and persist on the outer and inner surfaces of firearms and serve as evidence in criminal investigations. Herein, we are the first to present an anatomically correct head model for molecular ballistic research based on a p…

Rates of neurovascular injury, compartment syndrome, and early infection in operatively treated civilian ballistic forearm fractures.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the incidence of neurovascular injuries, compartment syndrome, early postoperative infecti … rm fractures result in high rates of neurovascular injury. Fractures caused by high velocity/energy firearms have extremely high rates of neurologic injury when compared with low velocity ballistic injuries. Ballistic fractures involving the proximal third of the radius or ulna are five times more likely to be associated with neurologic injury after a ball …

National trends and outcomes of cardiac arrest in opioid overdose.

AIM: To investigate the epidemiology and outcomes of cardiac arrests associated with opioid overdoses. Recent data suggest that drug overdoses are responsible for more deaths than motor vehicle crashes or firearms in the United States each year, with opioids being involved in majority of drug overdose deaths. Despite the potential for opioids to cause cardiac arrest, few studies have examined this association. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Using data from National (Nationwide) Inpatient Sample database from years 2000-2013, we identified hospitalizations with drug overdoses using ICD-9-CM codes. We f…

CONCLUSION: The analysis showed that body measures of suicide cases in comparison to other non-natural death circumstance cases differ. Are seasonalities in suicide dependent on suicide methods? A reappraisal.

In general, suicide frequencies peak in spring and early summer and depict a low in autumn and winter months. Suicide seasonality is a ubiqu … n pattern. Suicide seasonalities are absent or weak in some violent as well as non-violent methods (firearms, cutting, crashing, poisoning). Even if clearly present (hanging, drowning, jumping from high places, unspecified/other), the seasonalities show distinct patterns and cycles. Apart from sinusoidal patterns, there are also outliers: in overall data a …

Assessing Violence Risk in Adolescents in the Pediatric Emergency Department: Systematic Review and Clinical Guidance.

INTRODUCTION: Violence risk assessment is one of the most frequent reasons for child and adolescent psychiatry consultation with adolescents in the pediatric emergency department (ED). Here we provide a systematic review of risk factors for violence in adolescents using the risk factor categories from the MacArthur Violence Risk Assessment study. Further, we provide clinical guidance for assessing adolescent violence risk in the pediatric ED. METHODS: For this systematic review, we used the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) 2009 checklist. We searched

Acute lead poisoning in an indoor firing range.

The presented case demonstrates that acute lead poisoning may occur due to just short-term exposure to a mixture of lead-containing dust and ammunition. Such exposure may result in high blood lead levels persisting for years in the absence of any symptoms. A middle-aged male with a history of an approximately 7-day cleanup of an old recreational firing range with large ammunition and dust deposits presented to an emergency department with abdominal pain, dyspnea, fatigue and impaired cognitive function. Given his occupational history, specific tests were performed that showed high lead concent

The relationship between multiscale dynamics in tremulous motion of upper limb when aiming and aiming performance in different physical load conditions.

The dynamics of tremulous motion in the upper limb is complex. We aimed to explore the relationship between the complexity of upper limb tremor when aiming and aiming performance and the influences of physical load on the two outcomes. Fifteen modern pentathlon athletes were recruited and completed two 1000-m treadmill running and three 60-s standard aiming task trials: one at baseline and each of the other two immediately after each running. The time series of light spot trace on the target was measured using a high-speed camera. The complexity of this time series was quantified using multisc

Eighty-seven cases of a nail gun injury to the extremity.

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this research were to characterise the injury patterns associated with nail guns, highlight their potential complications and review treatment options. METHODS: A retrospective case series was conducted of all patients with a nail gun injury to the upper or lower limb who presented to the Princess Alexandra Hospital from 1 January 2007 to 30 July 2012. RESULTS: Young men in the work environment were at most risk of sustaining a nail gun injury to their non-dominant hand. Out of 87 cases identified, 29% were intra-articular, 16% had evidence of neurovascular injury, 24

Specifying the role of exposure to violence and violent behavior on initiation of gun carrying: a longitudinal test of three models of youth gun carrying.

Two waves of longitudinal data from 1,049 African American youth living in extreme poverty are used to examine the impact of exposure to violence (Time 1) and violent behavior (Time 1) on first time gun carrying (Time 2). Multivariate logistic regression results indicate that (a) violent behavior (Time 1) increased the likelihood of initiation of gun carrying (Time 2) by 76% after controlling for exposure to violence at Time 1, which is consistent with the stepping stone model of youth gun carrying, and (b) youth who were both exposed to violence at Time 1 and engaged in violent behavior at Ti

[Computer analysis of audiograms in epidemiologic surveillance of cohorts exposed to excessive noise].

We have developed a method for the assessment of auditive loss using a sample of 1794 Bekesy audiograms recorded in young military students. A rectangular digital filter was used to smooth rough audiogram signals so as to detect pathological patterns such as scotoms and recruitments. Three factors were extracted from principal component analysis. They were correlated with the usual auditory indices and explained 70% of the total observed variance. The first factor is a general indicator of deafness, while the second and third describe the shapes of the hearing threshold level (asymmetry and co

What is a gun good for? Esteem and protection in American gun owners.

What can we learn from gun owners by asking them about how their guns make them feel? We take a person-centered approach in analyzing a sample of over 4,000 gun owners drawn from a nationally representative survey frame to model the ways in which owners differ in the esteem they feel their guns provide. We find evidence for four distinct subpopulations of ownership, one which generally disagrees that guns help them to feel esteem (11.4% of the sample); two that generally agree that guns provide esteem, albeit to different degrees (39.8% and 30.2%, respectively); and one subpopulation that stro
