Regional brain morphology of the primary somatosensory cortex correlates with spicy food consumption and capsaicin sensitivity.

Objective: Habitual spicy food consumption leads to altered perception of capsaicin. Little is known about the neural morphological correlates of habitual spicy food intake and related trigeminal perceptions. In this study, we used voxel-based morphometry to identify brain regions where regional gray matter volume (GMV) correlates to spicy food consumption. Methods: Fifty-two participants were surveyed for their spicy food dietary habit by a composite score of spicy diet duration, frequency of spicy food consumption, and preferred degree of spiciness. Forty-two participants were further assess

Impact of lactic acid bacteria strains against Listeria monocytogenes biofilms on various food-contact surfaces.

Listeria monocytogenes is one of the most important foodborne pathogens, causing listeriosis, a disease characterized by high mortality rates. This microorganism, commonly found in food production environments and transmitted to humans by consuming contaminated food, has the ability to form biofilms by attaching to a wide variety of surfaces. Traditional hygiene and sanitation procedures are not effective enough to completely remove L. monocytogenes biofilms from food-contact surfaces, which makes them a persistent threat to food safety. Alternative approaches to combating Listeria biofilms ar

Suppression of alcohol intake after administration of the Chinese herbal medicine, NPI-028, and its derivatives.

The Chinese herbal medicine, NPI-028, has been used for centuries in China to counteract alcohol intoxication. The present study used a number of different experimental conditions to determine whether NPI-028 and its derivatives might selectively influence alcohol intake in rodents that naturally exhibit high alcohol intakes. It was determined that intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections of NPI-028 (0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 g/kg) suppressed alcohol intake by up to 30% in both alcohol-preferring P and Fawn-Hooded (FH) rats during a continuous access schedule. These injections did not significantly affect f

Allergy. Conventional and alternative concepts. A report of the Royal College of Physicians Committee on Clinical Immunology and Allergy.

Allergy is an exaggerated response of the immune system to external substances. It plays a role in a wide range of diseases. In some, such as summer hayfever, the symptoms are due entirely to allergy. In other conditions, particularly asthma, eczema and urticaria, allergy plays a part in some patients but not all. In these situations, allergy may have either a major role or provide just one of many triggers. In an individual patient's illness, the importance of allergy may change with time. The most common allergens (substances causing allergy) are grass and tree pollens, the house dust mite,

Allotriophagy And Allotriodipsia In Endocrinology.

Allotriophagy is defined as food cravings that are different from the expected or the norm. It gives clinical pointers to an underlying diagnosis. We propose a new term, allotriodipsia which suggests a preference for beverages that are different from the norm. Taken together, these two entities may point towards certain endocrinological abnormalities and iatrogenic sequelae. In this communication we highlight the clinical relevance of allotriophagy and allotriodipsia.

Prevalence of CAMPYLOBACTER in specific food and food products: a systematic literature review and meta-analysis.

Food safety has emerged as a major global concern due to the growing number of food contamination incidences. As a result, foodborne disease burdens continue to rise, adversely affecting the growing number of vulnerable populations. A major pathogen of concern worldwide is Campylobacter, primarily associated with raw foods of animal origin. The pathogen is responsible for causing human campylobacteriosis and other serious health symptoms that result in high case-fatality rates and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis compiled results of cr

Differential effects on natural reward processing in rats after repeated heroin.

RATIONALE: Heroin users report reward deficits as well as reward enhancements (to drug stimuli). To better understand the causal relation between chronic heroin and alterations in natural reward processing, we used experimental techniques in animal models. METHODS: Separate groups of rats were trained in several food reward paradigms: conditioned place preference (CPP), food-reinforced lever pressing under a progressive ratio schedule of reinforcement, free feeding, and lever pressing with conditioned reinforcement. After training, the rats were subjected to 10 daily heroin (2 mg/kg) or salin

Food image-induced brain activation is not diminished by insulin infusion.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The obesity epidemic appears to be driven in large part by our modern environment inundated by food cues, which may influence our desire to eat. Although insulin decreases food intake in both animals and humans, the effect of insulin on motivation for food in the presence of food cues is not known. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of an intravenous insulin infusion on the brain response to visual food cues, hunger and food craving in non-obese human subjects. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Thirty-four right-handed healthy non-obese subjects (19F/15M, age:

Prevalence and molecular identification of zoonotic Anisakis and Pseudoterranova species in fish destined to human consumption in Chile.

Zoonotic larvae of the family Anisakidae found in several fish species represent a serious risk in public health since they may cause food-borne anisakidosis in humans. Chile has culinary preferences including eating raw fish in many traditional preparations. In the present study, a total of 180 fish specimens representing three different fish species, i.e., Chilean hake (Merluccius gayi), snoek (Thyrsites atun), and sea bream (Brama australis), were caught at central coast of Chile. Parasitological examination was performed on musculature and abdominal cavity for subsequent extraction and qua

Spatial distribution and spread potential of sixteen Leptospira serovars in a subtropical region of Brazil.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that represents a major problem in animal and public health due to its high prevalence and widespread distribution. This zoonotic disease is most prevalent in tropical environments where conditions favour pathogen survival. The ecological preferences of Leptospira serovars are poorly understood, limiting our knowledge of where and when outbreaks can occur, which may result in misinformed prevention and control plans. While the disease can occur consistently in time and space in tropical regions, research on the ecology of leptospirosis remains limited in su

Rabies response, One Health and more-than-human considerations in Indigenous communities in northern Australia.

Australia is currently canine rabies free; however, the spread of rabies in eastern Indonesia poses an increasing risk to northern Australia. Domestic dogs are numerous in East Arnhem Land (EAL) and the Northern Peninsular Area (NPA), usually unrestrained and living in close relationships with humans. The response to any rabies outbreak on Australian territory will focus on dog vaccination, controlling dog movements and depopulation. A One Health approach to zoonotic disease control should seek to co-promote human and animal health, whilst also seeking to accommodate the preferences of affecte

Prevalence of Internet Addiction and Its Association With Lifestyle Factors Among University Students: A Pilot Study in Eastern India.

BACKGROUND: Internet addiction (IA), identified as compulsive use of the internet, is characterized by an individual's unwillingness to cease internet usage despite adverse impacts on their mental, physical, and psychological well-being. Recent studies reporting a high prevalence of IA among university students have also found an association of IA with factors such as academic performance, depression, obesity, substance abuse, unhealthy diet, and more. Among all the factors, lifestyle factors were the least explored. Hence, this study was carried out to find the prevalence of IA and its associ

Acceptability and effect on food choices of incentives promoting more sustainable diets among low-income consumers: A qualitative study.

In the context of rising food costs, low-income consumers are likely to lack financial access to a sustainable diet primarily composed of healthy plant-based food. To promote a change towards more sustainable food habits, vouchers for fruit, vegetables and legumes redeemable in supermarkets have been experimented in the urban area of Dijon (France). The objective of the study was to explore the acceptability of the intervention and the effects of the vouchers on food choices through participants' perceptions. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with twenty-seven participants

Diet quality and associations with motivation and ability to consume a healthy diet among adolescents from urban low-income households in Bangladesh.

In low- and middle-income countries, particularly in urban areas, adolescent diets consist mainly of energy-dense and nutrient-poor foods, putting them at risk of malnutrition and non-communicable diseases (NCD). In Bangladesh, little is known about the diet quality of adolescents, their food choices and the drivers of such choices. This study assessed motivations and ability to consume a healthy diet among adolescent girls and boys from low-income urban families and how these drivers were associated with dietary diversity and diet quality. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 299 adol

"We know what we should be eating, but we don't always do that." How and why people eat the way they do: a qualitative study with rural australians.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that most people are aware of the importance of healthy eating and have a broad understanding regarding types of food that enhance or detract from health. However, greater health literacy does not always result in healthier eating. Andreasen's Social Marketing Model and Community-Based Social Marketing both posit that, in order to change health behaviours, it is crucial to understand reasons for current behaviours and perceived barriers and benefits to improved behaviours. Limited research has been conducted, however, that explores these issues with general popula
