The challenges associated with the escalating global population and climate change in crop production and food security are substantial. This underscores the necessity for improvements in crop nutrition, yield, and resilience to environmental stresses. Plant metabolic pathways directly influence growth, nutrient accumulation, and stress responses, rendering them prime targets for crop enhancement. Advances in plant synthetic biology and gene editing are facilitating more precise modifications of genes, regulatory elements, and metabolic pathways. This review highlights the primary technologies…

Insect-mediated transmission is central to the epidemiology of plant viruses and has major implications for global food security and agricultural production. Although several resources have compiled information on plant virus transmission, evidence-traceable integration of virus-insect vector-host plant relationships remains limited. Here, we developed the Virus-Insect-Plant Database (VIP-DB), an evidence-guided database that links literature-derived virus-insect transmission records, host plant information, transmission mode annotations, taxonomic information, and traceable literature evidenc…

For nearly 30 years, Goose/Guangdong-derived highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 viruses have posed significant risks to economic stability, food security, and public health. Virus evolution has resulted in various clades, including the panzootic subclade 2.3.4.4b, recognized for its pandemic potential. Here we present the potent in vitro activity of FNI9, a pan-influenza NA-inhibiting monoclonal antibody, against a range of pseudoparticles with NA spanning decades of H5N1 virus evolution. FNI9 also shows strong prophylactic protection in female mice against lethal challenges with H5N1 from…

One of the greatest threats to public health today is not any single disease, environmental hazard, or conflict, but the erosion of the international rules-based order that enables countries to cooperate in addressing shared risks. Over the past decade, public health has faced increasingly interconnected challenges, including climate change, conflict, pollution, emerging infectious diseases, food and water insecurity, mass displacement, and misinformation. These threats are amplified by fragile governance, growing inequality, and declining trust in institutions. Public health depends fundament

Global soil salinity threatens food security and accelerates environmental degradation. However, the dual impacts of salinization on crop productivity and nitrogen dynamics have not been comprehensively quantified. Here we developed a spatially explicit nitrogen budget for global saline croplands and applied a pairwise comparison framework to assess salinity-induced changes in crop yields and reactive nitrogen (Nr) losses. We find that soil salinity raises nitrogen inputs by 13%, reduces nitrogen harvest by 7% and amplifies Nr losses by 61%. Our synthesis of ten categories of salinity-manageme…

The sustainability of global agricultural systems, a cornerstone for both economic security and food supply chains, is increasingly compromised by phytopathogen invasions. Herein, we characterize RP151—a novel biopesticide engineered through rational concatenation of plant immunity-stimulating peptides. This recombinant protein demonstrates exceptional bioavailability in Solanaceous crops like tobacco and tomato, inducing multifaceted defense responses within 24 h post-application, as evidenced by ROS burst, MAPK cascade activation, and localized callose deposition. Mechanistic studies reveal

Plant bacterial diseases threaten global food security and agricultural product quality. This study aimed to explore natural products with anti-phytopathogenic bacterial activity towards the new target guanosine monophosphate synthase (GMPS). Twelve phenolic compounds, including a new one, peniquinone L (1), were isolated using column chromatography and semipreparative HPLC from Chaetomium grande-JPT2. The molecular structures of the isolated compounds were determined by HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR spectrometry. High-throughput activity screening revealed that compound 11 could inhibit GMPS, yieldi…

Seed longevity (SL) is vital for ensuring food security worldwide. However, the genetic basis of SL has been scarcely documented. Here, we report the cloning of a major SL locus, qSL6, encoding a fatty acyl-ACP thioesterase type B. SL6 is functionally conserved in regulating palmitic acid synthesis in seeds, conferring higher oxidation durability and SL in various species. Through the VP1-SL6 module, a seed desiccation-derived ABA signal is transmitted via VP1, which directly activates SL6 transcription to alter the fatty acid composition and elevate SL in seeds. The ancestral elite allele SL6…

Cowpea wilt disease, caused by the combined infection of Fusarium oxysporum and Phytophthora vignae, poses a persistent threat to crop yields and food security, driving the need for a dual-target detection method for early warning and informed crop management. This study developed a new method that can simultaneously detect two target pathogens, using multiplex recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA), followed by detection via lateral flow dipsticks (LFD) and real-time fluorescence (RF). The optimized system detects pathogens at 10 pg/mL within 20 minutes, with results visible via test stri…

Wheat blast, a devastating disease originally confined to South America, has spread to Asia and Africa, raising serious concerns about global food security. By screening hexaploid wheat accessions collected worldwide, we identified two accessions that showed resistance to wheat blast even under high-temperature conditions and at the heading stage: a Triticum aestivum accession from Ethiopia (KU-7356) and a T. spelta accession from Spain (KU-1062). Genetic analyses revealed that resistance in each accession was controlled by a single gene. The resistance genes in KU-7356 and KU-1062 were mapped…

The seafood sector faces multiple challenges that threaten its contribution to food security. For developing effective governance strategies in response to those transformations, this study proposes a theoretical framework grounded in Actor-Network Theory (ANT), applied to the construction of a Social-Ecological Network (SEN), to better understand the structural complexity of the seafood sector SES in Boulogne-sur-Mer, Europe's leading seafood processing hub. Through semi-structured interviews, direct observations, and participatory workshops, we identified 227 nodes and 595 links across envir…

Climate change threatens global food security by imposing concurrent abiotic and biotic stresses on major crops such as rice. Genetic resources conferring dual resistance to drought and blast disease are rare, limiting the development of climate-resilient crops. Here, using a genome-wide association study, we identify NLR8-Hap2, a natural allele of the rice resistance gene NLR8 that enhances resistance to drought and blast disease. A single-base deletion in the NLR8-Hap2 coding sequence generates a premature stop codon, resulting in a protein lacking the C-terminal leucine-rich repeat (LRR) do…

The application of herbicides plays a critical role in ensuring food security. However, the long-term overuse of herbicides can lead to a range of adverse effects. Therefore, it is essential to develop innovative and sustainable herbicides. A series of pyridazinone derivatives targeting phytoene desaturase (PDS) were designed and synthesized by using a structure-based drug design strategy. A bioassay showed that 16c (100%, 85%) exhibited stronger herbicidal activity against portulaca oleracea (P.o.) than that of norflurazon (NRF, 60%, 45%) in both post- and pre-emergence applications at a dosa…

Fungal pathogens cause devastating diseases in staple crops and pose a tremendous threat to food security. Therefore, it is critical to understand the mechanisms of fungal attack and plant defense. Recent studies provide new insights into the role of nutrient manipulation for both plant and pathogen combatants. On the plant side, a defense signaling system has been discovered that provokes starvation during disease to limit access to carbohydrate by the head smut fungus Sporisorium reilianum. For pathogenic fungi, a novel class of effector proteins in the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae a…

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), a globally cultivated tuber crop, is crucial for food security. The metabolic specialization between tuber skin and flesh directly influences tuber stress resistance and quality. Transcriptome-metabolome analysis of two cultivars (IAW30 and IAY31) revealed tissue-specific metabolic profiles and molecular mechanisms. Flesh accumulates primary metabolites such as saccharides, amino acids and derivatives, and vitamins, whereas skin is enriched in secondary metabolites including glycoalkaloids and flavonoids. Marker metabolite analysis identified four flesh-specific …

Rising atmospheric CO2 has significant implications for crop productivity and food security. Based on studies in C3 plants, elevated CO2 (eCO2) can shape plant-pathogen interactions, although the outcomes are often variable. The question of how eCO2 influences immunity and disease development in C4 plants, such as the globally important cereal crop maize (Zea mays L.), has not been systematically examined. We challenged maize plants grown under ambient CO2 (aCO2, 420 ppm) and eCO2 (550 ppm) with bacterial, viral, fungal, and oomycete pathogens. Plants grown in eCO2 were more susceptible to sug…
