UNLABELLED: Nerve cuffs have been used to anchor and protect penetrating electrodes in peripheral nerves and have been used as non-penetrating electrodes for neural recording and nerve stimulation. INTRODUCTION: The term "gossypiboma" is used to describe any mass of non-absorbable surgical material. It is estimated that this complication appears every 1.000-10.000 procedures. It may lead to peritonitis, acute abdominal pain, intraperitoneal abscess, bowel obstruction, or perforation.
REPORT OF A CASE: We present the case of an 80-year-old female patient admitted for chronic abdominal pain and fever. A CT scan and MRI were performed with a probable diagnosis of carcinoma or pelvic abscess. A surgical history of hysterectomy and repair of abdominal wall hernia with a mesh were mentioned.

Antiinflammatory activity of aqueous extract of Tragia involucrata was tested on carrageenan-induced hind paw oedema and cotton pellet granuloma models in albino rats. Silicone abrasion particles are known to cause inflammatory changes following Swanson arthroplasty. Titanium grommets were introduced to protect the implants from wear and abrasion. A first case is reported of illicit intravenous injection of pentazocine tablets recognized in a country other than the USA. The pulmonary complications of i.v. drug abuse in general and in particular the hazards of injection of aqueous suspensions of pharmaceutical preparations intended for oral consumption, with embolization of abundant insoluble foreign material, are discussed. Diagnostic, therapeutic and prophylactic procedures are suggested.

The author has noted that the frequency of epithelial lesions appearing during the course of trials with soft hydrophilic lenses containing 40% water diminished almost completely with soft hydrophilic lenses containing 70% water. He attributes these epithelial lesions to anoxia occurring with soft hydrophilic lenses with 40% water. He compares the permeability to oxygen of different types of lenses according to their thickness. He concludes that at present the materials utilised and the thickness of the lenses do not allow permanent wear.

With rabbit corneas we did comparative biomicroscopical and histological investigations on material tolerance of the following threads at present used in microsurgery: Barraquer silk (virgin silk), nylon 30 mum (Tübinger nylon), dacron (polyester) 40 mum and plain collagen 7-0. The sutures were implanted into the cornea intra-lamellarly, completely under the microscope. The examinations showed only very little tissue reaction in all these materials.
