Correlation between aerial insecticide spraying to interrupt west nile virus transmission and emergency department visits in Sacramento County, California.

OBJECTIVES: Insecticides reduce vector-borne pathogen transmission but also pose health risks. In August 2005, Sacramento County, California, underwent emergency aerial ultralow-volume (ULV) application of pyrethrin insecticide to reduce the population of West Nile virus (WNV)-infected mosquitoes and thereby interrupt enzootic and tangential transmission. We assessed the association between aerially applied pyrethrin insecticide and patterns of emergency department (ED) visit diagnoses. METHODS: We used geographic information systems software to determine ZIP Code-level exposure to pyrethrin.…

Neighborhood-level socioeconomic and urban land use risk factors of canine leptospirosis: 94 cases (2002-2009).

Associations of housing, population, and agriculture census variables, and presence near public places were retrospectively evaluated as potential risk factors for canine leptospirosis using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The sample population included 94 dogs positive for leptospirosis based on a positive polymerase chain reaction test for leptospires on urine, isolation of leptospires on urine culture, a single reciprocal serum titer of 12,800 or greater, or a four-fold rise in reciprocal serum titers over a 2-4 week period; and 185 dogs negative for leptospirosis based on a negative …

First evidence of spatial clustering of lymphatic filariasis in an Aedes polynesiensis endemic area.

Successful elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) requires accurate identification of residual foci of transmission and stringent surveillance strategies to combat potential resurgence. This is challenging in areas where the day-biting Aedes polynesiensis is endemic, such as Samoa, since in previous studies no geographical clustering of infection has been demonstrated. Another challenge for this low prevalence phase is the choice of diagnostic assay as testing for circulating filarial antigen (CFA) or microfilariae (Mf) alone may not have adequate sensitivity. This could be solved by using t

Anti-Toxoplasma gondii Antibodies in European Residents: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Studies Published between 2000 and 2020.

Toxoplasmosis has a major impact on animal and public health. Information regarding the seroprevalence of human Toxoplasma gondii infections from a European perspective has not yet been compiled to date. Thus, the present review summarized available resident data from the period 2000-2020. The overall seroprevalence of anti-T. gondii IgG was 32.1%, with great variability between countries (n = 30). The subgroup analysis identified different pooled prevalence data depending on the geographic area (p < 0.0001), target population (p = 0.0147), and serological diagnosis assays used (p = 0.0059). A

Spatial analysis of schizotypal personality traits in Chinese male youths: evidence from a GIS-based analysis of Sichuan.

BACKGROUND: Schizotypal personality traits are associated with schizophrenia spectrum disorders, stating that schizotypal traits may represent a "prodrome" or other developmental precursor of schizophrenia. Genetic and environmental factors both play importanxt roles in the development of schizotypal traits. Different levels of schizotypal traits across regions may be indicative of similar differences in the incidence of schizophrenia. AIM: The present study identifying where in a given region, schizotypal personality traits are more or less level of schizotypal personality scores in Chinese

GOES ABI-derived hailstorm polygons and tracking dataset for Brazil.

This paper describes a dataset of convective systems (CSs) associated with hailstorms over Brazil tracked using GOES-16 Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) measurements and the Tracking and Analysis of Thunderstorms (TATHU) tool. The dataset spans from June 5, 2018, to September 30, 2023, providing five-year period of storm activity. CSs were detected and tracked using the ABI's clean IR window brightness temperature at 10.3 µm, projected on a 2 km x 2 km Lat-Lon WGS84 grid. Systems were identified using a brightness temperature (BT) threshold of 235 K, conducive to detecting convective clusters wi

Spatial variability in the density, distribution and vectorial capacity of anopheline species in a high transmission village (Equatorial Guinea).

BACKGROUND: Malaria transmission varies from one country to another and there are also local differences in time and space. An important variable when explaining the variability in transmission is the breeding behaviour of the different vector species and the availability of breeding sites. The aim of this study was to determine the geographical variability of certain entomological parameters: human biting rate (HBR), sporozoitic index (SI) for Plasmodium falciparum and entomological inoculation rate (EIR). METHODS: The study was carried out in a small village in the mainland region of Equato

Invisible in the system: Fragmented data and territorial inequalities in sickle cell disease in Brazil.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder strongly shaped by social, racial, and territorial inequalities. We identified, mapped, and characterized the population living with SCD in a state in Northeast Brazil and examined how fragmented institutional records affect the epidemiological visibility of the disease. We carried out a cross-sectional, multi-source study using institutional datasets on people with SCD. Records from these sources were consolidated and complemented by active tracing to update information. Adults were interviewed to describe their sociodemographic conditions, clin

Barriers and facilitators to maternal, newborn, and child health service utilization among internally displaced populations in Somalia.

BACKGROUND: Internally displaced populations (IDPs) in Somalia face a disproportionate burden of poor maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) outcomes due to conflict, recurrent displacement, poverty, and weak health systems. Evidence on the barriers and facilitators influencing MNCH service utilization in these settings remains fragmented. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize the available evidence on barriers and facilitators affecting utilization of MNCH services among IDPs in Somalia, with a focus on antenatal care, skilled delivery, postnatal care, immunization, and care-seeking for childhood ill

Spatial trypanosomosis management: from data-layers to decision making.

The use of geographical information systems (GIS) in the management of African animal trypanosomosis in sub-Saharan Africa offers potential in assisting decisions on allocation of resources, prioritization of control areas, and planning and management of field operations. Here, Guy Hendrickx and colleagues review approaches being used to develop reliable data-layers and to incorporate these data into GIS models. They argue that techniques should be further refined to produce more-detailed data layers and to include a dynamic element, a problem rarely addressed until now.

Parenting and proximity to social services: Lessons from Los Angeles County in the community context of child neglect.

Using a sample of 438 parents in Los Angeles County, CA, this study examines the role of proximity to social services in child neglect. In an extension of social disorganization theory, it seeks to understand the potential sources of support in neighborhoods for families. It uses ordinary least squares regression to examine driving distance from parents' residences to four types of services (child care, domestic violence, mental health/substance abuse, and poverty). The results show an association between proximity to mental health and substance abuse services and parents' self-reported neglec

Mental health in the slums of Dhaka - a geoepidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: Urban health is of global concern because the majority of the world's population lives in urban areas. Although mental health problems (e.g. depression) in developing countries are highly prevalent, such issues are not yet adequately addressed in the rapidly urbanising megacities of these countries, where a growing number of residents live in slums. Little is known about the spectrum of mental well-being in urban slums and only poor knowledge exists on health promotive socio-physical environments in these areas. Using a geo-epidemiological approach, the present study identified fac

Caregiving burden and out-of-home mobility of cognitively impaired care-recipients based on GPS tracking.

BACKGROUND: Out-of-home mobility refers to the realization of trips outside the home, by foot or by other means of transportation. Although out-of-home mobility is important for the well-being of older people with cognitive impairment, its importance for their caregivers is not clear. This study aims to clarify the relationship between caregiving burden and out-of-home mobility of care-recipients using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) technology. METHODS: Seventy-six dyads (care-recipients and caregivers) were recruited from a psychogeriatric center, where they underwent cognitive assessment,

Wide geographic distribution of Cryptosporidium bovis and the deer-like genotype in bovines.

Recent studies in the United States reported that approximately 85% of pre-weaned dairy calves were infected with zoonotic Cryptosporidium parvum, whereas only 1-2% of post-weaned calves and 1-2-year-old heifers were infected with this species. Cryptosporidium bovis and Cryptosporidium deer-like genotype were much more prevalent in the post-weaned animals. It is not clear whether the same infection pattern also occurs in other geographic areas. In this study, to determine whether the same Cryptosporidium infection pattern was present in other geographic areas, we genotyped Cryptosporidium spec
