BACKGROUND: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH, histiocytosis X, ICD-O 9751/1) refers to a neoplastic proliferation of Langerhans cells. The course of the disease determines the treatment and prognosis. Solitary forms (eosinophilic granuloma) and limited multilocational lesions may be treated successfully with local surgical intervention and intralesional corticosteroid injection.

We describe a 35-year-old man who was initially treated with standard inguinal orchiectomy and prophylactic radiotherapy for Stage I seminomatous germ cell tumor of the testis. We report the case because of the unique nature of the later disease recurrence, which was a solitary cranial bony recurrence that extended both intracranially and extracranially. The patient had complete remission after combined cisplatin-based chemotherapy.

From 1957 to 1992, 18 cases of primary mediastinal germ cell tumours were referred to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute (PMCI). Six were seminomas, six were mixed germ cell tumours, two were embryonal cell carcinomas, three were teratocarcinomas and one was labelled an 'anaplastic germ cell tumour'.
