StarPicker: A Technique for Selecting Dense Small Targets in AR-Based Data Visualization Environments.

In the era of Big Data, augmented reality (AR)-based 3D visualization technology is gradually becoming an essential tool of effective information dissemination. However, 3D data visualization inevitably faces a series of challenges, particularly when visualizing large datasets within limited physical spaces. This often results in high spatial density, characterized by smaller target objects and occlusion of data objects, which greatly complicate object selection and subsequent interaction. To address these issues, this paper proposes a multimodal progressive target selection technique-StarPick

Design and Preliminary Evaluation of a Smart Orthotic Videogame Controller Dedicated to Children.

This paper describes the development, fabrication and testing of Playcuff, a wearable device designed to act as a videogame controller for children with motor disabilities, which also provides an orthotic action to improve the control of the upper limb. The aim of this device is to empower children with motor impairment and enable them to access and enjoy gaming despite their disabilities. The videogame controller function was achieved through on-board gesture classification using a two-tiered Fine Tree machine learning algorithm integrated into the device's firmware. Based on features extract

Working through emotions: Sadness predicts social engagement and physiologic linkage for men and disengagement for women in dyadic interactions.

We investigated whether sadness leaves an "emotional residue" by inducing sadness in one individual and testing its transfer to an unaware new acquaintance. Participants (N = 230; 115 dyads) completed cooperative tasks in same-gender dyads. Before meeting, participants recalled a personal event. In half the dyads, one participant (sad actor) recalled a sad event, while their partner (sad-paired partner) recalled a neutral event. In control dyads, both participants recalled neutral events. We examined self-reported emotions, affective language, behavior, and measures of sympathetic arousal to c

Research on Multimodal Control Method for Prosthetic Hands Based on Visuo-Tactile and Arm Motion Measurement.

The realization of hand function reengineering using a manipulator is a research hotspot in the field of robotics. In this paper, we propose a multimodal perception and control method for a robotic hand to assist the disabled. The movement of the human hand can be divided into two parts: the coordination of the posture of the fingers, and the coordination of the timing of grasping and releasing objects. Therefore, we first used a pinhole camera to construct a visual device suitable for finger mounting, and preclassified the shape of the object based on YOLOv8; then, a filtering process using m

Tactile Exploration Strategies With Natural Compliant Objects Elicit Virtual Stiffness Cues.

When interacting with deformable objects, tactile cues at the finger pad help inform our perception of material compliance. Nearly all prior studies have relied on highly homogenous, engineered materials such as silicone-elastomers and foams. In contrast, we employ soft plum fruit varying in ripeness; ecological substances associated with tasks of everyday life. In this article, we investigate volitional exploratory strategies and contact interactions, for comparison to engineered materials. New measurement techniques are introduced, including an ink-based method to capture finger pad to fruit

Prosociality.

Prosociality refers to behaviours that are intended to benefit others. This definition appears to be so straightforward that it hardly bears mentioning: like certain forms of adult entertainment, we know it when we see it. Yet, determining what counts as prosocial is not as simple as it first appears. There are numerous behaviours that appear prosocial but, on scrutiny, may not have been intended and motivated for the well-being of others. Consider a banal scenario: a seated passenger on a crowded bus stands up and someone takes his seat. Did the person standing up intend that someone else tak

Force-time course parameters and force fatigue model during an intermittent fatigue protocol in motorcycle race riders.

Fatigue in forearm muscles may be critical for motorcycle riders in relation to performance and forearm disorders. Force-time course parameters were examined to better characterize the reduction in the maximal force generating capacity (MVC) during an intermittent fatigue protocol (IFP) specifically designed for motorcycle riders. Also, a mathematical force fatigue model is proposed. Forty motorcyclists (aged 27.6 ± 6.8 years) performed an IFP that simulated the braking gesture and posture of a rider. Fatigue was confirmed by a 40% decrement of the normalized MVC in comparison with basal value

Designing virtual audiences for fear of public speaking training - an observation study on realistic nonverbal behavior.

Virtual Reality technology offers great possibilities for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy of fear of public speaking: Clients can be exposed to virtual fear-triggering stimuli (exposure) and are able to role-play in virtual environments, training social skills to overcome their fear. Usually, prototypical audience behavior (neutral, social and anti-social) serves as stimulus in virtual training sessions, although there is significant lack of theoretical basis on typical audience behavior. The study presented deals with the design of a realistic virtual presentation scenario. An audience (consisti

Cognitive mechanisms of visuomotor transformation in movement imitation: examining predictions based on models of apraxia and motor control.

When we observe a movement and then reproduce it, how is this visual input transformed into motor output? Studies on stroke patients with apraxia suggest that there may be two distinct routes used for gesture imitation; an indirect route that recruits stored movement memories (motor programs) and a direct route that bypasses them. The present study examined 30 healthy adults ages 18-80 (mean age=44.0 years, SD=19.5) to learn how motor programs are recruited or bypassed in movement imitation depending upon task conditions (whether familiar letters or novel shapes are imitated) and perceptual fa

The PDD Behavior Inventory: a rating scale for assessing response to intervention in children with pervasive developmental disorder.

The PDD Behavior Inventory (PDDBI) is a rating scale filled out by caregivers or teachers that was designed to assess children having a Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD; autism, Asperger disorder, PDD-NOS, or childhood disintegrative disorder). Both adaptive and maladaptive behaviors are assessed in the scale, making it useful for treatment studies in which decreases in maladaptive behaviors and improvements in adaptive social and language skills relevant to PDD are expected. The adaptive behaviors assessed include core features of the disorder such as joint attention skills, pretend play

Timing of events in normal swallowing: a videofluoroscopic study.

Dynamic videofluoroscopic swallow studies were performed on 60 normal adult volunteers to establish normative data for clinically useful timing measures. The relation of swallowing gesture timing to the timing of actual bolus transit was of particular interest because it provides insight into the physiology of larger bolus volume accommodation. Parameters evaluated include the timing of bolus pharyngeal transit, soft palate elevation, aryepiglottic fold elevation and supraglottic closure, arrival of the bolus in the vallecula, hyoid bone displacement onset and duration, arrival of the bolus at

[Recovery of the "instrument-hand" and the "communication-hand" in the hemiparetic child].

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation techniques have always attached great importance to the recovery of hand functions in the different forms of child cerebral palsy. The human hand has complex structure and functions, and it can be defined as "instrument-hand", "expression-hand", "relation-hand" and "constant challenge to rehabilitation programmes. Among the most common techniques used today, neuromuscular facilitation allows the recovery only of the instrumental function, and cortical facilitation allows only the awareness of the motor learning. The psychomotor approach is aimed at a global recovery

The syndrome of partial seizures in infancy.

Partial seizures, the most frequent type of epilepsy at all ages, remain a distinct yet relatively understudied disorder in early life. Their true incidence has not been defined, despite an extremely unfavorable long-term prognosis. They differ from partial seizures presenting later in life in several important aspects and are prone to misdiagnosis because of the difficulties inherent in recognizing subtle seizure manifestations and in assessing level of consciousness in very young patients. Most seizures are symptomatic of assorted prenatally acquired hemispheric insults; perinatal damage and

Modification of cervical dystonia by selective sensory stimulation.

Cervical dystonia is often refractory to all forms of therapy. Many patients, however, are able to transiently abolish their spasms following a specific gesture that presumably enhances sensory input. Such observations prompted us to develop a protocol to determine if various forms of sensory stimulation could modify the motor control patterns in cervical dystonia. Surface EMG recordings of multiple neck and trunk muscles were obtained in 11 consecutive cervical dystonia patients. Baseline patterns of voluntary and involuntary muscle activation were established during a series of motor and non

Self-touch: Contact durations and point of touch of spontaneous facial self-touches differ depending on cognitive and emotional load.

Every human being spontaneously touches its eyes, cheeks, chin and mouth manifold every day. These spontaneous facial self-touches (sFST) are elicited with little or no awareness and are distinct from gestures and instrumental acts. Self-touch frequency has been shown to be influenced by negative affect and attention distraction and may be involved in regulating emotion and working memory functions. Yet, even though self-touch research dates back several decades fundamental aspects, like the temporal progression of sFST or the effects of executing hand and touched face area, have not yet been …

Florida Apraxia Battery-Extended and revised Sydney (FABERS): design, description, and a healthy control sample.

There exist few clinical assessments for limb apraxia, a disorder of learned, purposeful action, that enable clinicians to distinguish pathological from normal variance in limb praxis performance. We describe a theoretically motivated, comprehensive assessment battery for limb apraxia and present control comparison scores for 16 older healthy normal individuals on subtests designed to distinguish the integrity of components of the praxis system.
