Lobular capillary hemangioma (LCH), previously known as pyogenic granuloma, is a benign vascular lesion commonly found within the oral and nasal cavities. However, it is rarely encountered within the trachea, especially in pediatric patients, where it manifests as hemoptysis, cough, and wheeze, and is frequently misdiagnosed as bronchitis or asthma. There is limited literature on the presentation, behavior, and management of tracheal LCH. Herein, we describe a rare case of tracheal LCH in an 11-year-old boy with a history of hemoptysis, which was successfully managed with arterial embolization

BACKGROUND: Pilomatricoma is a common but easily misdiagnosed tumor in children.
AIMS: To differentiate pilomatricoma from other common subcutaneous nodules in children.
PATIENTS/METHODS: Misdiagnosed subcutaneous nodules in four children were recorded.
RESULTS: A red mass on a 7-year-old boy's head which had been misdiagnosed pyogenic granuloma was proved to be pilomatricoma. A red mass on an 8-month-old boy's face which had been misdiagnosed infantile hemangioma also turned to be pilomotricoma. A red mass on a 21-month-old girl's breast, which had been misdiagnosed pilomatricoma, was prov

There is little discussion of tumors arising in the digits in the dermatology literature. The patient with an undifferentiated mass of the finger is frequently encountered in the clinic, and variances in presentation of common and uncommon entities pose a challenge that may prompt further investigation for proper diagnosis and treatment. In this review, the authors illustrate the approach and work-up of an unknown digit mass of a 45-year-old female patient. They go on to discuss the presentation and treatment of common tumor lesions of the finger likely to be encountered in the dermatologist's

Aggressive digital papillary adenocarcinoma (ADPCA) is rare tumor of the sweat glands, which is characterised by lesions on the fingers, toes and the digits. The lesion is serious but often overlooked because it is confused clinically with benign and non-tumorous entities. In this paper, we present an interesting case of ADPCA in a 40-year-old lady, suspected clinically as pyogenic granuloma, with the initial excision biopsy indicating a malignant tumor in the sweat gland. Ray amputation of the affected finger was done followed by a thorough work up to rule out metastasis. Histopathological fe

PURPOSE: To evaluate the feasibility of performing sutureless amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) using fibrin glue for conjunctivochalasis.
DESIGN: Noncomparative interventional case series.
METHODS: In 25 eyes of 16 patients with refractory conjunctivochalasis (CCh), AMT using fibrin glue was performed to cover the bare sclera.
RESULTS: The mean age was 55.2 +/- 18.5 years with nine patients (56.2%) younger than 60 years. The Tenon capsule was dissolved in all eyes. Fibrin glue was effective in securing the amniotic membrane to the sclera. For a mean follow-up of 10.6 +/- 4.3 months,

PURPOSE: A 66-year-old woman presented with a 1-month history of prominent mucoid discharge and foreign body sensation in her left eye.
METHODS: Ocular evaluation revealed a moderately severe superficial punctate keratitis involving the temporal half of the left cornea. The superior tarsal conjunctiva showed marked papillary reaction with an area of indentation temporally. A mass was present in the superior temporal aspect of the fornix, clinically resembling a pyogenic granuloma. At the posterior aspect of this mass and covered by mucoid material, was a soft contact lens.
RESULTS: Upon remo

Excisional biopsies require wide margins to facilitate removal of diseased tissue. Such margins often result in soft-tissue defects. These defects can cause reduced esthetics, ineffective oral hygiene performance, and postsurgical root sensitivity. This case documents the combination of two dental procedures: biopsy and the free gingival graft. A pyogenic granuloma, as diagnosed by histologic report, was removed by excisional biopsy and the resultant defect repaired by using a free gingival graft. Palatal tissue was grafted immediately to the site of the biopsy and sutured in place to cover th

This article reviews literature regarding tumors and tumor-like lesions of the conjunctiva and cornea as published in 1995. Causative and prognostic factors, as well as treatment options, are discussed. Ocular surface squamous neoplasia has been suggested as an "umbrella" term for dysplastic and carcinomatous lesions of the cornea and conjunctiva. Squamous cell carcinoma shows a higher incidence in patients with AIDS. A high prevalence (36%) of primary acquired melanosis is reported in one article, and the need for biopsy of all these lesions is questioned. Reviews of conjunctival myxoma, corn

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Medial canthoplasty surgically fuses the upper and lower lids medial to the puncta. The authors modified the procedure by inserting a temporary lacrimal stent in order to avoid kinking and scar contracture of the canaliculi.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A medial canthoplasty successfully corrected lower eyelid laxity in 14 patients with the following conditions: (1) exposure and/or neurotrophic keratitis with medial ectropion and/or retraction of the lower eyelid (11 patients), and (2) inability to retain a prosthesis because of lower eyelid ectropion and contracture of th

The carbon dioxide laser is useful for vaporizing lesions and applying incisions, the argon laser coagulates superficial vascular lesions and the neodymium-YAG laser is used for large vascular and more deeply situated lesions. Many patients with port-wine stains have been treated with excellent to poor results, major problems consisting of incomplete color removal and hypertrophic scarring (occurring in 4% to 23% of cases). While results are imperfect, patients are satisfied with the improvement in 86% of cases. Lasers have been used with good results for treating patients with strawberry angi

The occurrence of Masson's "hemangio-endotheliome vegetant intravasculaire" (Masson's pseudoangiosarcoma) in the skin and soft tissues is illustrated with 17 surgically excised specimens. Two forms are recognized; it may appear either as a pure lesion or as a focal condition in a pre-existing vascular process, such as pyogenic granuloma or hemangioma. The clinical appearance is not specific and the diagnosis can only be established by microscopic examination. It shows a predilection for the head and extremities. Its characteristic morphologic appearance makes possible its differentiation from

A transparent acrylic hamster cheek-pouch chamber was used to investigate the elaboration of a tumor angiogenic factor (TAF) by human cutaneous neoplasms; direct tumor implantations, transfilter diffusion, and soluble tumor extracts were used in the study. A diffusible and filterable TAF was extracted from cutaneous tumors and produced distinctive patterns of sequential vasodilatation, tortuosity, and neovascular proliferation in the cheek-pouch membrane. Malignant human neoplasms (eg, melanoma, basal cell epithelioma, squamous cell carcinoma, lymphoma) produced striking neovascularization; va

Kaposi sarcoma is a low-grade vascular neoplasm that has been shown by molecular analysis to uniformly express the latent nuclear antigen-1 of human herpes virus 8. Differentiating Kaposi sarcoma from other benign or malignant vascular tumors, as well as other nonvascular spindle cell soft-tissue neoplasms, can be challenging. Thus, detection of human herpes virus 8 in fixed tissues would be diagnostically useful. Recently, a monoclonal antibody to human herpes virus 8 latent nuclear antigen-1 has become commercially available for immunohistochemical analysis. We sought to study the sensitivit

Microscopic diagnosis of early Kaposi's sarcoma continues to be a challenge to the pathologist, as does the identification of bacillary angiomatosis (BA) which may have a similar appearance. 120 oral Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) biopsies submitted to the UCSF oral pathology service from 1981-1991 were reviewed in order to describe the clinical-pathologic spectrum of these lesions and to search for unrecognized cases of BA. Also, histopathologic features of oral KS were compared to 30 oral pyogenic granulomas, and immunohistochemical stains for endothelium-associated CD34 antigen were done. The diagno

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to quantify the number of mast cells in focal reactive hyperplastic lesions of the oral cavity and to compare these two number of mast cells in normal gingival tissues and to correlate their presence with the state of connective tissue changes in reactive lesions and probably suggest a role for mast cells in these lesions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patient records were retrieved during a 10 year period from 2001 to 2010. Data of all reactive hyperplasias namely focal fibrous hyperplasia, pyogenic granuloma (PG), peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) and periphe

OBJECTIVE: Oral and maxillofacial lesions vary regarding their clinical presentation in different populations. Until now, oral and maxillofacial lesions in Iranian children and adolescents have not been studied. The aim of this study was to determine the type and distribution of biopsied oral lesions among children and adolescents in Southern Iran.
METHODS: All the patients referred to the pathology department of Shiraz Faculty of Dentistry from 1991-2009 were enrolled in this retrospective, case-series study. The information regarding the patients' age, gender as well as the histopathologic

Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) is a rare disorder characterized by spontaneous and progressive bone resorption. Its clinical presentation varies from unremarkable to life-threatening, making diagnosis and treatment challenging. Despite extensive research, no definitive correlations have been established between GSD and age, gender, race, or environmental and infectious risk factors. A 32-year-old woman with GSD presented during her second pregnancy, experiencing gingival mass recurrence after 20 years. Biopsy revealed pyogenic granuloma, leading to 20 cycles of radiotherapy with no disease progres

T-cell-rich angiomatoid polypoid pseudolymphoma (TRAPP) is a rare and recently defined entity, conceptualized just over a decade ago. Recognition of TRAPP is important because it can be clinically and microscopically confused with low-grade cutaneous lymphomas and other vascular proliferations. We report a case of a 28-year-old male with a solitary 1.2 cm red polypoid papule on the middle posterior base of the neck. The histopathological examination revealed a well-circumscribed dermal nodular proliferation of banal-appearing lymphovascular spaces with plump endothelial cells. Immunohistochemi

Capillary hemangiomas and pyogenic granuloma (PG) are well-recognized benign entities of the oral cavity which are vascular in origin. PG is said to have a predilection for gingival area, whereas capillary hemangioma involves the lips, cheek, and tongue. They may mimic more serious conditions such as malignancies making the clinical diagnosis quite challenging. There have been cases reported where PG was found on extra-gingival sites such as the palate, lips, and tongue. We present the two cases of lobular capillary hemangioma (LCH) on extragingival sites, namely the palate and buccal mucosa,
