Public Perceptions of Gambling in the UK Armed Forces: Understanding Stigma Via a Vignette Experiment.

Gambling-related harm among armed forces (AF) personnel is a growing concern, yet public perceptions remain underexplored. Anticipated public stigma (the fear of how others perceive you) of gambling among the AF is a potential barrier to help-seeking. Understanding how the public perceives gambling in the AF is essential for shaping stigma-reduction strategies. A randomised, online 2 × 2 between-subjects experiment was conducted. A representative sample of the United Kingdom public (N = 396) was recruited through Prolific and randomly assigned to view a vignette featuring either an AF member o

A pre-post pilot study of electronic cigarettes to reduce smoking in people with severe mental illness.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is the largest single contributor to poor physical health and increased mortality in people with serious mental illnesses. The aim of the study was to investigate the utility of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) as a harm reduction intervention in this population. METHOD: Fifty tobacco smokers with a psychotic disorder were enrolled onto a 24-week pilot study (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT02212041) investigating the efficacy of a 6-week free e-cigarette intervention to reduce smoking. Cigarette and e-cigarette use was self-reported at weekly visits, and verified using carbon …

Piloting a Point-of-Care Drug-Checking Service at Syringe Service Programs in New York City.

BACKGROUND: Drug checking is an evidence-based harm reduction strategy that can contribute to safer use by providing people who use drugs (PWUD) with actionable information about the contents of the drugs they are using and ways to reduce harm. In response to persistently high overdose rates largely driven by adulteration and volatility of the unregulated drug supply, the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH) initiated a point-of-care drug-checking pilot study in partnership with syringe service programs. METHODS: Drug-checking services were piloted at 6 sites over t…

Electronic prescribing and patient safety: a rigour-stratified systematic review of medication error, adverse drug events, workflow, and communication.

BACKGROUND: Electronic prescribing is promoted to improve medication safety. Whether its benefit differs between process failure and patient harm is rarely asked. OBJECTIVE: To synthesise the evidence on electronic prescribing and medication error, adverse drug events, workflow and communication against the designs able to establish each. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, Embase and ProQuest (1994 to 2024, English), reporting to PRISMA 2020 and PRISMA-S. Risk of bias was assessed at domain level with design-matched tools. Non-poolable metrics precluded meta-analysi

A Qualitative Study on the Impact of COVID-19 on Overdose Risk from the Perspective of Survivors and Witnesses of Drug Overdose: Lessons for Future Public Health Emergencies.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic had a devastating impact on people who use drugs (PWUD). Reductions in access to harm reduction tools and treatment services elevated rates of fatal overdose for many. We explore the mechanism through which these factors influenced the rise in overdose mortality during COVID-19 from the perspective of people with overdose encounters. METHODS: We conducted in-depth, semi-structured, 60-minute telephone-based interviews with 43 overdose survivors and witnesses between January and May 2022. Participants were from nine states (ME, MI, MD, NJ, NY, NM, PA, TN, WV…

Detected substance abuse among injecting drug users through analysis of used syringes in Tunisia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Injecting drug use poses significant public health risks due to unsafe practices such as syringe sharing, reuse, and risky sexual behaviors, which increase the transmission of bloodborne viruses. In Tunisia, limited data on injecting drug use hinders the development of informed health and harm reduction policies. METHODS: A syringe collection campaign was conducted in Tunis in November 2022. The used syringes were provided by the Tunisian Association for Information and Orientation on AIDS and Addiction (ATIOST), a harm-reduction service. These syringes had been distribut…

Social networks, secondary syringe exchange, and opioid agonist therapy retention among people who inject drugs in Hartford, CT.

BACKGROUND: Opioid agonist therapies (OAT) and  harm reduction such as syringe service programs (SSP) have been shown to be effective in preventing adverse outcomes such as overdose deaths, HIV and Hepatitis C infections among people who inject drugs (PWID). The importance of social network influence on disease transmission is well established, yet the interplay between harm reduction and network structures is, generally, not well understood. This study aims to analyze how social networks can mediate the harm reduction effects associated with secondary exchange through syringe service programs…

High-Throughput Qualitative and Quantitative Drug Checking by MALDI HRMS.

Illicit drugs are a global health problem, since both their acute and chronic consumption have negative impacts on the drug user's health. Drug checking facilities are receiving growing interest as they allow drug users to chemically analyze their product prior to consumption to assess the presence of adulterants or other non-expected substances. Such harm reduction programs allow the reduction of the risks associated with drug consumption without encouraging it. In particular, the emergence of new psychoactive substances (NPS) emphasizes the risk for the population increasing the diversity an…
