Cycling injuries and alcohol.

BACKGROUND: Most of the cycling accidents that occur in Finland do not end up in the official traffic accident statistics. Thus, there is minimal information on these accidents and their consequences, particularly in cases in which alcohol was involved. The focus of the present study is on cycling accidents and injuries involving alcohol in particular. METHODS: Data on patients visiting the emergency department at North Kymi Hospital because of a cycling accident was prospectively collected for two years, from June 1, 2004 to May 31, 2006. Blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was measured on adm

How safe is your motorcycle helmet?

PURPOSE: Motorcycle crash helmets do not totally prevent head and facial trauma. The aim of this study was to investigate if protection offered by helmets differs according to helmet type. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, outpatient records of motorcyclists were analyzed for the Facial Injury Severity Scale (FISS), traumatic brain injury (TBI), facial fractures, and helmet use. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Fisher and Bonferroni tests, bivariate regression analysis, and 1-way analysis of variance. RESULTS: There were 253 motorcyclists who sustained cr

The aging road warrior: national trend toward older riders impacts outcome after motorcycle injury.

Industry statistics suggest that motorcycle owners in the United States are getting older. Our objective was to analyze the effect of this demographic shift on injuries and outcomes after a motorcycle crash. Injured motorcyclists aged 17 to 89 years in the National Trauma Databank were reviewed from 1996 to 2005. Age trends and injury patterns were assessed over time. Injury Severity Score (ISS), length of stay (LOS), intensive care unit (ICU) use, comorbidities, complications, mortality, injury patterns, helmet use, and alcohol use were compared for subjects 40 and older versus those younger

Risk factors for riding and crashing a motorcycle unhelmeted.

BACKGROUND: Currently, less than half of all U.S. states require helmets for motorcycle operators. Although research has demonstrated the effectiveness of helmets, less is known about the characteristics of individuals who choose to ride motorcycles unhelmeted. OBJECTIVES: The specific aims of this study were to identify risk factors leading to riding and crashing a motorcycle without a helmet and to compare outcomes of helmeted vs. unhelmeted motorcyclists involved in a motorcycle crash. METHODS: This 13-year (1994-2006) retrospective study of adult motorcycle crashes admitted to a Level II

Bicycle-related injuries.

Bicycle riding is a popular form of recreation among persons of all ages, and related injuries cause significant morbidity and mortality. Most injuries occur in males and are associated with riding at high speed; most serious injuries and fatalities result from collisions with motor vehicles. Although superficial soft tissue injuries and musculoskeletal trauma are the most common injuries, head injuries are responsible for most fatalities and long-term disabilities. Overuse injuries may contribute to a variety of musculoskeletal complaints, compression neuropathies, perineal and genital compla

Facial fractures in a level I trauma centre: the importance of protective devices and alcohol abuse.

Urban trauma centres have recently noted a shift in the causative mechanism of facial fractures away from motor vehicle crashes (MVC) to blunt assaults (BA). This study was conducted to examine the incidence and aetiology of facial fractures at our institution as well as the relationship with alcohol and protective device use. Trauma registry records of all patients admitted to a level I trauma centre from 1 January 1988 to 1 January 1999 were reviewed. There were 13594 trauma admissions during the 11-year period. Facial fractures were sustained by 1429 patients (10.5%) and this group forms th

Fabrication and Implantation of Refined Silicone Strain Gauges for Long-Term Monitoring of Gastric Motility in Freely Moving Mice.

This protocol describes the fabrication and surgical implantation of flexible, biocompatible silicone strain gauges for long-term monitoring of gastric motility in freely moving C57BL/6J mice. Continuous assessment of gastric motor activity in conscious animals remains technically challenging because anesthesia and invasive procedures can alter normal gastrointestinal physiology. To address these challenges, this protocol combines refined silicone encapsulation of the strain gauge with secure head-mounted connector fixation to improve device stability during long-term recordings while protecti

Assessing long-term outcomes of open and endoscopic sagittal synostosis reconstruction using three-dimensional photography.

Sagittal synostosis has been successfully managed with numerous surgical techniques. Nevertheless, few data on long-term outcomes exist to justify use of one surgical technique over another. In this study, we compared children with surgically corrected sagittal synostosis to their age-matched control subjects to assess the longevity of their corrections. Furthermore, the outcomes of open repairs were compared with endoscopic repairs.Following institutional review board approval, three-dimensional photographs of patients who underwent surgical reconstruction for nonsyndromic sagittal synostosis

Out-of-hospital helmet CPAP in acute respiratory failure reduces mortality: a study led by nurses.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Acute respiratory failure (ARF) is a condition that must be treated as quickly as possible. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is a common method used to treat ARF in hospital. The main objective of our study was to investigate the effect of CPAP prior to admission to the emergency room, on the reduction of endotracheal intubation, in-hospital mortality and on the length of stay in hospital (HLOS). METHODS: A prospective, observational (non-randomised) study with a historical control group. Data from 3 groups of patients with ARF, irrespective of cause, was collect

Motorcyclist "biker couples": a descriptive analysis of orthopaedic and non-orthopaedic injuries.

The term "biker couple" is becoming an increasingly common site in emergency departments. The purpose of this study was to identify orthopaedic and non-orthopaedic injury patterns among this unique patient group. A 14-year (1993-2006) retrospective review of a Level I Trauma Institute Registry was performed. Patient demographic and injury data were obtained from 21 confirmed biker couples (n=42). Nineteen of 21 biker couple pairs (90.5%) included a male driver and a female passenger. Drivers were more likely to have a positive blood alcohol concentration/toxicology test. Drivers had a greater

Sagittal synostotic twins: reverse pi procedure for scaphocephaly correction gives superior result compared to endoscopic repair followed by helmet therapy.

A unique situation of twins with similar sagittal synostosis pathology who underwent different surgical corrective procedures allowed us an opportunity to compare an endoscopic technique to the more traditional technique of a modified cranial vault remodeling (CVR). At 4 months of age, 1 twin underwent an endoscopic-assisted extended strip craniectomy with postoperative helmet therapy for 12 months, and the other underwent a reverse pi CVR procedure. Cephalic index, the Whitaker Aesthetic score, and developmental tests were used for comparison during a 6-year follow-up. The modified CVR had a

Snow sports related head and spinal injuries: an eight-year survey from the neurotrauma centre for the Snowy Mountains, Australia.

Neurotrauma from snow-sports related injuries is infrequently documented in the literature. In Australia no collective data has ever been published. The aim of this study is to document the injury pattern of snow sports related neurotrauma admissions to The Canberra Hospital, the regional trauma centre for the Snowy Mountains. A computerised hospital record search conducted between January 1994 and July 2002 revealed 25 head and 66 spinal injury admissions. The incidence of severe injuries requiring referral to tertiary trauma hospital was estimated to be 7.4 per 100,000 skier-days and for hea
