Reproductive health care for women with spina bifida.

Women with spina bifida have unique health care concerns and as the life expectancy of this population increases, they are transitioning from adolescence to womanhood and entering their reproductive years with little information about what to expect. Likewise, their health care providers do not have the benefit of evidence-based research that comprehensively addresses the issues these women may face related to reproduction or aging. Few studies have focused on the effects that spina bifida may have on these women's reproductive systems, nor has attention been paid to the effects that possible

The Five Nations model for prison health surveillance: lessons from practice across the UK and Republic of Ireland.

BACKGROUND: Prison populations experience an increased burden of physical, mental and social health needs compared to the community, further impacted by the prison environment. Surveillance systems to monitor health and well-being trends in prisons are lacking, presenting a challenge to services planners, and policy makers who often lack evidence to inform decisions. METHOD: The Five Nations Health and Justice Collaboration, a body of experts on prison health across the UK and Republic of Ireland (ROI), met to share and discuss challenges and opportunities to developing robust prison health s

Assessing the impact of socioeconomic and environmental factors on mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic based on GPS-enabled mobile sensing and survey data.

This study examines the impact of individual socioeconomic factors, living environment factors (e.g., housing conditions), and environmental exposures (e.g., greenspace) on people's mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong. We measured the environmental exposures to greenspace, noise and air pollution using GPS tracking and mobile sensing data collected from survey participants, in addition to obtaining socioeconomic and living environment data from them using conventional survey questionnaires. We used an ordinal logistic regression model to determine the socioeconomic and envi

Pediatric psychopharmacology in primary care: a conceptual framework.

In a 2009 policy statement focused on children's mental health, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that pediatric primary care physicians achieve competence in initiating care for children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, depression, and substance use/abuse. Because treatment for 3 of these conditions--ADHD, anxiety, and depression--may, under certain conditions, include medication, the primary purpose of this article is to offer guidance to assist primary care physicians in decision-making about their use of psychotropic medications for these conditio

[Quality assurance in invasive and interventional cardiology in Austria in 1994. Commissioned by the Interventional Cardiology Working Group of the Austrian Cardiology Society].

A complete National Database is the prerequisite for quality control, quality management and improvement. In Austria, we have been reaching for this goal since more than three years. 21 094 diagnostic coronary angiographies (CA) and 4934 PTCAs were performed in all 27 centers (out of which 17 perform PTCA) in Austria during the year 1994. This is a reduction of 3.2% concerning CA and an 8.6% increase in PTCA compared to 1993. 48% of all PTCAs were done during the diagnostic study (CA), multivessel PTCA in 11%, direct PTCA for ongoing infarction in 2.3%. Concerning "new devices", 437 stents (18

Bridging the epistemic gap: a psychological acceptance model for the cross-cultural health communication of traditional Chinese medicine.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is now included in the ICD-11, reflecting its growing use within systems of medical pluralism worldwide. Its global communication, however, continues to encounter cognitive friction. This friction reflects an epistemic gap between TCM's holistic, pattern-based logic and the reductionist framework of biomedicine, a gap that linguistic translation cannot close on its own. The present study develops the TCM Psychological Acceptance Model (TCM-PAM) to address this challenge and to consider how the ontological insecurity often experienced by non-Chinese audiences

A National Web-GIS Dashboard to Support African Swine Fever Surveillance in Domestic Pigs and Wild Boars in Italy.

African swine fever is a fatal disease that affects members of the Suidae family and also threatens human economic activity. Genotype II of the African swine fever virus was detected in the wild boar population in mainland Italy in 2022. Subsequently, the infection spread to domestic pig populations. To support the monitoring of the national surveillance plan and the implementation of control measures, a dedicated African Swine Fever Web-GIS dashboard (ASF Web-GIS dashboard) was developed by the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell'Abruzzo e del Molise "G. Caporale" (IZSAM), in collabora

Safety Evaluation of Reinforced Concrete Structures Using Multi-Source Fusion Uncertainty Cloud Inference and Experimental Study.

Structural damage detection and safety evaluations have emerged as a core driving force in structural health monitoring (SHM). Focusing on the multi-source monitoring data in sensing systems and the uncertainty caused by initial defects and monitoring errors, in this study, we develop a comprehensive method for evaluating structural safety, named multi-source fusion uncertainty cloud inference (MFUCI), that focuses on characterizing the relationship between condition indexes and structural performance in order to quantify the structural health status. Firstly, based on cloud theory, the cloud

[Pacemaker and implantable defibrillators with telemedical support].

Recent developments in pacemaker and ICD therapy can be characterized by a rising number of implantations (especially in the field of ICD and CRT systems) and an increasing complexity of the units involved. Problems evolving from this trend are the soaring numbers of necessary follow-up examinations, issues of patient safety and the necessity of device management by specialized physicians. Telemonitoring offers various possibilities of improvement in these areas. The manufacturers of the devices have developed applicable solutions for concepts of care including telemedical monitoring of patien

Increasing Immigration Enforcement in the Hospital Setting: Public Health Risks and Guidance for Hospitals and Healthcare Professionals.

Healthcare settings, dedicated to patient care and healing, have traditionally been somewhat insulated from broader political and cultural controversies. However, on January 21, 2025, the Department of Homeland Security rescinded the "sensitive location" designation for hospitals and other healthcare facilities, permitting Immigration and Customs Enforcement to conduct more enforcement actions in these settings. The previous sensitive location designation effectively meant that immigration enforcement actions, such as arrests or surveillance, were to be avoided absent exigent circumstances (i.

What went wrong?: Patient reasons for nonattendance at Women's health physiotherapy.

Nonattendance at women's health physiotherapy sessions involves considerable cost in time and resources. Uncovering factors associated with nonattendance is one priority, and the current research aimed to enhance understanding of this issue. In each of two studies, women referred for women's health physiotherapy were interviewed. Study 1 (N = 80) compared participants who did and did not attend their appointment, and Study 2 (N = 61) compared reasons for nonattendance given by women with pelvic-floor muscle dysfunction and pelvic girdle pain. The results corroborated several key issues associa

A network analysis of cofactor-protein interactions for analyzing associations between human nutrition and diseases.

The involvement of vitamins and other micronutrients in intermediary metabolism was elucidated in the mid 1900's at the level of individual biochemical reactions. Biochemical pathways remain the foundational knowledgebase for understanding how micronutrient adequacy modulates health in all life stages. Current daily recommended intakes were usually established on the basis of the association of a single nutrient to a single, most sensitive adverse effect and thus neglect interdependent and pleiotropic effects of micronutrients on biological systems. Hence, the understanding of the impact of ov

[Epidemiological surveillance of Andes virus: have we really learned anything after COVID-19?].

Recent Andes virus outbreaks have reignited international debate regarding Public Health preparedness for hantaviruses with documented interpersonal transmission capacity. Unlike other orthohantaviruses, Andes virus has demonstrated person-to-person transmission in specific epidemiological settings, including household and nosocomial environments. The recent emergence of cases linked to multinational outbreaks has prompted renewed assessments and recommendations from international public health organizations. This manuscript presents an epidemiological reflection on current surveillance challe

Considering Systemic Barriers to Treating Tobacco Use in Clinical Settings in the United States.

The Comorbidity Workgroup of the Tobacco Treatment Research Network, within the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco, previously highlighted the need to provide tobacco treatment to patients diagnosed with comorbid physical and mental health conditions. Yet, systemic barriers in the United States health care system prevent many patients who present for medical treatment from getting the evidence-based tobacco treatment that they need. The identified barriers include insufficient training in the epidemiologic impact of tobacco use, related disorders, and pharmacological and behavioral t
