The protein S100 is an acidic calcium-binding protein, and the subunit S100B is the most abundantly found in the brain. The aim of the present study was a comprehensive analysis of serum S100B levels in medicolegal autopsy cases (within 48 h postmortem, n = 283) including victims with head and non-head injuries and also non-injury fatalities with regard to the cause of death involving brain damage. The serum level was usually higher in the subclavian vein than in the right heart and external iliac vein, and the lowest in the left heart blood, showing no significant postmortem influence. The se

Background Disturbed cerebral autoregulation has been reported in children with congenital heart disease before and during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery, but not after. We sought to characterize the cerebral autoregulation status in the early postoperative period in relation to perioperative variables and brain injuries. Methods and Results A prospective and observational study was conducted in 80 patients in the first 48 hours following cardiac surgery. Cerebral oximetry/pressure index (COPI) was retrospectively calculated as a moving linear correlation coefficient between mean arterial bloo

INTRODUCTION: The wide application of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) in industry, agriculture, environmental remediation, and biomedicine has increased the risk of human exposure to CuO NPs. Recent studies suggested that CuO NPs have genotoxic and cytotoxic effects on various cells. However, little is known about the toxicity of CuO NPs on major peripheral organs after respiratory exposure.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigated the toxicities of CuO NPs on human bronchial epithelial (BEAS-2B) and human cardiomyocytes (AC16) cells in vitro, and on the lungs, liver, kidneys, and heart of

BACKGROUND: There has been an increasing interest in the development and prevention of sports injuries from a complex dynamic systems perspective. From this perspective, injuries may occur following critical fluctuations in the psychophysiological state of an athlete. Our objective was to quantify these so-called Early Warning Signals (EWS) as a proof of concept to determine their explanatory performance for injuries. The sample consisted of 23 professional youth football (soccer) players. Self-reports of psychological and physiological factors as well as data from heart rate and GPS sensors w

Traumatic rupture of the aorta (TRA) is an important transportation-related injury. This study investigated TRA mechanisms using in situ human cadaver experiments. Four quasi-static tests and one dynamic test were performed. The quasi-static experiments were conducted by perturbing the mediastinal structures of the cadavers. The mechanisms investigated included anterior, superior, and lateral displacement of the heart and aortic arch. The resulting injuries ranged from partial tears to complete transections. All injuries occurred within the peri-isthmic region. Intimal tears were associated wi

The mechanisms and pathophysiology of perioperative neurologic injury are reviewed. The principle mechanisms of the ischemic injury are gaseous and particulate emboli and hypoperfusion caused by cerebrovascular occlusive disease. The contribution of the cardiopulmonary bypass circuit to the development of ischemic injury is discussed. The important role of the surgeon in preventing particulate and gaseous microemboli and macroemboli is described and techniques for avoiding hypoperfusion in the presence of occlusive cerebrovascular disease are presented. Patients at greatest risk of perioperati

A 65-year-old male developed acute myocardial infarction due to coronary artery dissection and tricuspid valve injury after blunt chest trauma. Acute myocardial infarction was treated by coronary artery intervention; however, refractory heart failure with pleural effusion remained. The first transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) on admission failed to clearly visualize the tricuspid valve and right ventricle due to poor image quality. A follow-up TTE with contrast ultrasonography revealed pericardial rupture in addition to tricuspid regurgitation. Ruptures of the tricuspid papillary muscle and

BACKGROUND: Intracardiac shunts are rare but very serious lesions after non-penetrating chest trauma. Their diagnosis is difficult. This pathology often goes unrecognized in the context of multiple trauma.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 21-year-old man involved in a motor vehicle crash who presented with multiple injuries including myocardial contusion, severe brain injury, multiple pelvic fractures, closed femur fracture, bilateral lung contusion with a right pneumothorax, and intra-abdominal injuries. Three days after the initial event, a new cardiac murmur and complete heart block ap

Increasing evidence suggests that induction of mild hypothermia (32-35 degrees C) in the first hours after an ischaemic event can prevent or mitigate permanent injuries. This effect has been shown most clearly for postanoxic brain injury, but could also apply to other organs such as the heart and kidneys. Hypothermia has also been used as a treatment for traumatic brain injury, stroke, hepatic encephalopathy, myocardial infarction, and other indications. Hypothermia is a highly promising treatment in neurocritical care; thus, physicians caring for patients with neurological injuries, both in a

Intraoperative biliary tract injuries are relatively uncommon, but are a cause of significant morbidity and mortality. We have repaired open biliary tract injuries found postoperatively in three patients without reoperation by percutaneous intervention. In two cases, biliary stents were placed percutaneously across the injured portion of the bile duct. For this procedure, a unique coaxial guidewire technique was used. The bile leaks resolved soon after insertion of the biliary stents. In one patient, an expandable metallic biliary endoprosthesis was inserted, and the temporary stent was remove

Chest injuries have a high and steadily increasing incidence in western countries, but only some of the most common problems they create require an emergency thoracotomy or surgical video thoracoscopy. Flail chest, persistent pneumothorax, massive haemothorax, mediastinal emphysema, cardiac tamponade and intrathoracic foreign bodies can be identified as major surgical problems. Some of such patients (i.e. those with flail chest or foreign bodies) would be immediately candidates for major intervention. Other require fast but diagnostic procedures, because the choice of a therapy is dependent up

Adult mammalian hearts are non-regenerative, and a majority of studies examining repair and potential regeneration post-myocardial infarction (MI) have focused on cardiomyocyte (CM) proliferation and infarcted zones. Here, we observed aberrantly high expression of lysozyme 2 (Lyz2) in injured mouse hearts at both local injury sites and at remote zones, with sustained Lyz2 expression conspicuous in endocardial cells of non-regenerative hearts. Although traditionally conceptualized as a myeloid marker, we demonstrate that LYZ2 functions as an injury-specific, positive regulator of lysosomal degr

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Honey-processed licorice (HPL) is the roasted product of licorice. It is recorded in the "Shang Han Lun" that licorice has better protection on heart after honey-processed. However, researches regarding its protective effect on the heart and the distribution of HPL in vivo are still limited.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the cardio-protection of HPL and explore the law of ten main components distribution in vivo under physiological and pathological conditions for an attempt to clarify the pharmacological substance basis of HPL in treating arrhythmia.

We studied changes in the content of obscurin and the corresponding mRNA in the left ventricle of rat heart during the development of isoprenaline-induced myocardial injury. Myocardial injury was induced by subcutaneous injection of β-adrenoreceptor agonist isoprenaline hydrochloride at a dose of 150 mg/kg of body weight twice with a 24-h interval. On day 14, the animals were euthanized. An increase (by 28.7%; p ≤ 0.01) in heart weight, as well as an increase (by 17.7%; p ≤ 0.01) in the heart-to-body weight ratio in rats after isoprenaline injection were observed, indicating the development of

Following injury, cells in regenerative tissues have the ability to regrow. The mechanisms whereby regenerating cells adapt to injury-induced stress conditions and activate the regenerative program remain to be defined. Here, using the mammalian neonatal heart regeneration model, we show that Nrf1, a stress-responsive transcription factor encoded by the Nuclear Factor Erythroid 2 Like 1 (Nfe2l1) gene, is activated in regenerating cardiomyocytes. Genetic deletion of Nrf1 prevented regenerating cardiomyocytes from activating a transcriptional program required for heart regeneration. Conversely,

Heart block and arrhythmia are complications of pulmonary artery and cardiac catheterization. Injury to the conducting system of the heart often involves the right bundle causing right bundle branch block (RBBB). If patients already have left bundle branch block (LBBB), complete heart block (CHB) may result. After trauma, impairment of the right bundle is usually transient with recovery in hours, but complete heart block can lead to symptoms requiring invasive treatment. Similar complications are rare with insertion of central venous catheters, as they should not enter the heart. Injury to the

AIM: Thyroid dysfunctions can increase the risk of myocardial ischemia and infarction. However, the repercussions on cardiac ischemia/reperfusion (IR) injury remain unclear so far. We report here the effects of hypothyroidism and thyrotoxicosis in the susceptibility to IR injury in isolated rat hearts compared to euthyroid condition and the potential role of antioxidant enzymes.
METHODS: Hypothyroidism and thyrotoxicosis were induced by administration of methimazole (MMZ, 300 mg/L) and thyroxine (T4, 12 mg/L), respectively in drinking water for 35 days. Isolated hearts were submitted to IR an

BACKGROUND: During heart transplantation (HTx), donor hearts are exposed to injury via brain death (BD) and cardiac preservation using static cold storage (SCS). Preservation using hypothermic oxygenated machine perfusion (HOPE) may reduce myocardial injury compared with SCS preservation. This study sought to better understand how the BD donor cardiac allograft is modified before HTx and posttransplant following HOPE preservation.
METHODS: Using an ovine model, changes in mitochondrial respiratory function, cardiac contractility, and electrophysiology (biventricular endocardial signal amplitu

BACKGROUND: Nitric oxide (NO) has been implicated as a mediator in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, but its functional properties have been conflicting. We investigated whether NO has a protective role against I/R injury.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Using endothelial NO synthase knockout (eNOS KO) mice, inducible NOS KO mice, the NO donor S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP), and the NOS inhibitor N-iminoethyl-L-ornithine (L-NIO), we performed studies of isolated perfused hearts subjected to 30 minutes of global ischemia followed by reperfusion. After 60 minutes of reperfusion, nitrit

The study sought to assess the detrimental effects of isoproterenol (ISO) on major organs and investigate the potential reversibility of these adverse reactions in mice. Male mice were divided into normal control, 0.2 mg/kg.d and 3.0 mg/kg.d ISO groups, and were subcutaneously administered of the respective doses for 14 consecutive days. Subsequently, a recovery period experiment was conducted, replicating the aforementioned procedure, followed by an additional 2-week recovery period for the mice. Following 14 consecutive days of administration, mice treated with ISO exhibited notable cardiac
