[The role of Helicobacter pyroli in the development of skin diseases].

The paper presents the current state-of-the-art concerning the effect of Helicobacter pyroli infection on the progress of some skin diseases (Raynaud's disease, purpura hyperergica, rosacea, prurigo nodularis, atopic dermatitis, chronic urticaria). The attention was turned to the lack of unanimity among authors respective to the effect of Helicobacter pylori on the progress of some skin diseases, especially those of allergic etiology. The methods of bacteria identification were discussed. The methods are as follows: invasive tests involving endoscopy of the upper segment of the alimentary trac…

Helicobacter pylori infection in the Caribbean: update in management.

Helicobacter pylori infection of the stomach is one of the commonest chronic infections worldwide and in the Caribbean, over 50% of the population are affected. H pylori is probably transmitted from person to person by oro-faecal and oro-oral means. H pylori is directly associated with peptic ulcer disease, chronic antral gastritis, gastric carcinoma and B-cell lymphoma of the stomach. In patients with peptic ulcers and H pylori infection, eradication of infection with antibiotics significantly decreases recurrence of ulcers. All patients with H pylori related disease should be tested and trea…

Treatment of Helicobacter pylori in patients with lymphocytic gastritis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Lymphocytic gastritis is a subtype of chronic gastritis characterized by a marked increase in the number of intraepithelial lymphocytes in the gastric mucosa. Its etiology is unknown, but a proportion of these patients have Helicobacter pylori infection. The aim was to assess the significance of H. pylori treatment in lymphocytic gastritis patients. METHODOLOGY: The 10 patients with lymphocytic gastritis and either serologically or histologically diagnosed H. pylori infection were treated with a triple therapy and followed by serology and histology after 6-18 months. RESULTS…

Helicobacter heilmannii gastritis: a histological and immunohistochemical trait.

AIM: Biopsies of the gastric antrum were reviewed over a period of 10 years to determine the prevalence of Helicobacter heilmannii in symptomatic subjects from this geographical area and to relate its presence to distinctive histopathological and immunohistochemical features. METHODS: Biopsies from 7926 symptomatic patients were reviewed. Ten serial sections were stained with haematoxylin and eosin for conventional histology. Another 10 sections were stained with the Gram method for spiral bacteria. When H heilmannii was suspected, 10 additional serial sections were stained with methylene blu…

[Role of cytokines in chronic gastritis by Helicobacter pylori].

Helicobacter pylori is a curved, gram negative bacterium that inhabits only the gastric mucous membrane. Since its discovery and characterization, it has been related to the physiopathology of gastroduodenal diseases, including gastritis, peptic ulcers, gastric carcinoma and MALT lymphoma. This has resulted in numerous hypotheses that try to explain the different events that take place during the inflammation. The bacterium Settler, characterized by a marked infiltration of inflammatory cells (neutrophils, monocytes, linfocytes, etc.) which, after being activated, liberate locally various chem…

A stain for demonstrating Helicobacter pylori in gastric biopsies.

Helicobacter pylori continues to be a significant health care problem. It is associated with a variety of stomach disorders such as gastritis, gastric ulcer disease, gastric carcinoma and B-cell gastric lymphoma. One common method diagnosing an infection by this bacterium is microscopic examination of routine processed gastric or duodenal biopsies. With this type of specimen, it is necessary to demonstrate visually the presence of H. pylori using an appropriate staining technique. This paper presents a simple staining technique for demonstrating H. pylori in gastric biopsy specimens using carb…

Parietal cell antibodies and Helicobacter pylori in children.

BACKGROUND: Gastric autoantibodies are common in Helicobacter pylori-infected adults, and the presence of these antibodies is associated with atrophic gastritis. The role of H. pylori in the autoimmune type of atrophic gastritis is unresolved, and it is not known at what stage the autoantibodies appear in serum during H. pylori infection. Therefore, we screened children with and without H. pylori infection for gastric parietal cell antibodies. METHODS: Seventy-one children with H. pylori infection verified by examination of gastric biopsy specimens (mean age, 9.4 years), 8 children with posit…

Role of Helicobacter pylori infection in pernicious anaemia.

BACKGROUND: Pernicious anaemia is associated with atrophic body gastritis and considered an autoimmune disease. Whether Helicobacter pylori is involved in the induction of pernicious anaemia is uncertain. AIMS: To investigate the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in pernicious anaemia patients and to ascertain whether the Helicobacter pylori-positive patients had distinctive clinical and gastric morphofunctional characteristics. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A series of 81 consecutive pernicious anaemia patients underwent serological, functional and endoscopic/histological investigations. …

[The role of Helicobacter pylori in abdominal pain in children].

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) colonizes the human stomach, especially during childhood. H. pylori gastritis, in the absence of duodenal ulcer, does not appear to be associated with specific symptoms. After eradication of H. pylori infection, abdominal pain is improved only in children with duodenal ulcer. Children with H. pylori gastritis cannot be distinguished from uninfected children on the basis of initial symptoms. However, although not demonstrated, a relationship between H. pylori and recurrent abdominal pain might exist since some studies showed that H. pylori-infected children prese…

Helicobacter pylori infection and eradication in paediatric patients.

Helicobacter pylori is now recognised to be typically acquired during childhood. Studies also indicate that the infection is frequently lost in childhood; however, it is still unclear whether this is related to the use of antibacterials, the natural history of the infection, or both. H. pylori colonises gastric mucosa and is causally related to chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease in both children and adults. Successful eradication of H. pylori has resulted in the healing of duodenal ulcers and the lowering of the ulcer relapse rate in children. Therapy to cure the infection should be st…

Consequences of Helicobacter pylori cure in ulcer patients.

In the complex pathogenesis of genuine ulcer disease Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is an essential, although not on its own sufficient, causal factor. Eradication of the infection heals the active ulcer and, in the long term, leads to a drastic reduction in ulcer recurrence and attendant complications. Some patients remain symptomatic even without ulcer recurrence, and in these, pre-existing, exacerbated or induced gastro-oesophageal reflux disease is probably of some significance. Possible causes of ulcer relapse are reinfection, the use of ulcerogenic drugs and persistent gastric hypersecr…

Association of Helicobacter pylori infection with gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori has generated public health interest since its identification in 1983. Past studies have suggested that the bacterium plays a role in the pathogenesis of gastric cancer. More recent studies support the conclusion that the association of H. pylori with gastric cancer is causal. The purpose of this article is to review the available evidence supporting the association of H. pylori with gastric cancer. METHODS: We performed a critical review of the relevant literature published in the English language on H. pylori and gastric cancer using MEDLINE, Index Medicus fo…

Dyspepsia is associated with CagA-positive Helicobacter pylori.

OBJECTIVE: The role of Helicobacter pylori in nonulcer dyspepsia is controversial. Speculation has arisen that only strains of H. pylori carrying the CagA virulence factor are important in the development of dyspepsia. The objective of this study was to determine whether nonulcer dyspepsia correlated with CagA-positive H. pylori infection. METHODS: A total of 435 healthy blood donors and 102 general medicine clinic respondents completed the Bowel Disease Questionnaire and the PRIME-MD survey, a validated screen for common psychiatric disorders. Subjects were classified as cases of nonulcer dy…

[Occurrence of Helicobacter pylori in patients with gastroesophageal tumors].

Authors examined the occurrence of H. p. retrospectively in bioptic material for three years. Fifty-one oesophageal and gastric tumorous patients were examined and as a control fourty-seven non tumorous patients with chronic gastritis chosen at random. The demonstration of H. p. was performed by modified Giemsa stain. Different types of chronic gastritis, forms and localisation of the tumours as well as their relation with sex and age were investigated. The occurrence of H. p. was higher in chronic gastritis than in tumorous processes. Seventy-one % H. p. positivity was found in the control gr

[Peptic ulcer and Helicobacter pylori, diagnosis and therapy].

The diagnosis of peptic ulcer must be precise and based on both endoscopic examination (in the case of gastric ulcer to differentiate between benign or malign ulcers), and on bioptic examination. Peptic ulcer is pathogenetically associated with H. pylori. A small group of patients with duodenal ulcers and without H. pylori or without an other known cause (NSAID, etc.) is a poorly defined sub-group of patients. H. pylori has an important role in the pathogenesis of gastritis and bulbitis. Both states are involved in the pathogenesis of peptic ulcer. If H. pylori is eradicated, inflammatory chan

[Characteristics of Helicobacter infections in gastroduodenal ulcers and their complications].

The presence of Helicobacter pylori (HP) was studied in 143 patients with ulcer disease of the stomach and duodenum. The urease test, immunoenzyme analysis, "AEROTEST" and culture of HP in laboratory conditions were used for diagnosis of HP. On the grounds of the culture method three degrees of colonization of the gastroduodenal mucosa were established. It was found that 96.3% of the patients were infected with HP, 86.3% of them having massive colonization. All the patients with complicated ulcers of the duodenum were HP-positive. A severe degree of the HP-infection with the predominant involv…

Relationship of Helicobacter pylori infection with gastrointestinal motility.

The interest of gastroenterologists in the relationship between Helicobacter pylori and gastrointestinal motility emerges from the observation that Helicobacter pylori may be involved in the pathogenesis of functional dyspepsia and that a relatively large percentage of patients with dyspepsia may show impaired gastrointestinal motility. A number of studies have been published on the interaction between Helicobacter pylori infection and gastrointestinal motility with controversial results, and, therefore, there are no definite conclusions, as yet, as to whether Helicobacter pylori is able, at a…
