Anthelmintic resistance in canine parasitology: a critical review of an emerging global challenge.

Anthelmintic resistance (AR) in canine parasitology is rapidly emerging as a significant health challenge. Growing reports of multidrug resistance in the canine hookworm Ancylostoma caninum, as well as macrocyclic lactone resistance in the heartworm Dirofilaria immitis, and isolated cases in Dipylidium caninum, highlight the increasing importance of AR. Unlike livestock, AR in dogs develops under different dynamics, shaped by unique epidemiological and biological features, including lower treatment frequencies, smaller parasite populations, and distinct husbandry practices. Nevertheless, frequ

Helminth community of Thrichomys laurentius (Rodentia: Echimyidae) between two contrasting phytogeographic subunits of the Caatinga.

The structuring of parasite communities in small mammals depends on both host-intrinsic factors and environmental conditions. We investigated the helminth fauna of the caviomorph rodent Thrichomys laurentius, comparing populations from two contrasting phytophysiognomies in the Caatinga biome: open shrubland in Carrasco area and seasonal deciduous forest in Mata Seca area. In this context, the influence of biotic predictors (host sex and host body weight) and abiotic predictors (phytogeographic subunit: Carrasco or Mata Seca) on parasite diversity (species richness, Shannon, and Simpson indices

Unveiling helminth diversity in Scinax Wagler, 1830 (Anura: Hylidae): New records from S. x-signatus (Spix, 1824) in the Caatinga domain, Brazil, and an overview of South America.

Amphibian helminth diversity remains poorly documented in semiarid environments, despite its relevance for understanding host-parasite interactions and biogeographical patterns. We investigated the helminth community of the hylid frog Scinax x-signatus from a Caatinga remnant in Petrolina (Pernambuco, Brazil) and reviewed the current state of knowledge on helminth infecting South American Scinax species. Twenty-five S. x-signatus (11 adult females, 9 adult males and 5 juveniles) were examined; of these, 13 specimens (52%) harboured at least 1 helminth taxon, with infracommunity richness rangin

Enteric neurons and immune cells shape anti-helminth immunity.

Wang et al. recently reported that during helminth infection, innate lymphoid cell (ILC)-derived IL-13 is sensed by gut neurons, which in turn secretes CGRP to inhibit ILC2 proliferation and anti-helminth responses. Hence, this study demonstrates a bidirectional crosstalk between enteric neurons and immune cells that regulates type-2 immunity.

Helminth-induced immune modulation in colorectal cancer: exploring therapeutic applications.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most lethal tumors, posing a financial and healthcare burden. This study investigates how helminths and pre-existing diseases such as colitis, obesity, diabetes, and gut microbiota issues influence colon cancer development and prognosis. The immune system's protective immunosuppressive response to helminth invasion minimizes inflammation-induced cell damage and DNA mutations, lowering the risk of colorectal cancer precursor lesions. Helminth infection-mediated immunosuppression can hasten colorectal cancer growth and metastasis, which is detrimental to patient o

Helminth parasites of terrestrial and freshwater chelonians in the Neotropical region: Biogeographic distribution and new record for Phrynops geoffroanus (Schweigger, 1812) (Testudines: Chelidae) in the Brazilian semi-arid region.

The Neotropical region is considered a biodiversity hotspot for reptiles, with eight families of terrestrial and freshwater chelonians. Parasites are of great importance to aquatic ecosystems and are essential to host communities. They help understand the patterns and phylogenetic relationships of their hosts and act to control populations. A literature survey on helminth parasites of chelonians in the Neotropical region was conducted, examining the most commonly found groups of helminths, the most parasitized hosts, compiling their biogeographical and political distribution and recording the

Co-Infection Dynamics of Helicobacter pylori and Helminths: A Double-Edged Sword.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and intestinal helminthes are common in low- and middle-income countries, where co-infection is endemic due to similar modes of transmission and poor sanitation. Whereas H. pylori are recognized gastric pathogens that induce gastritis, ulcers, and gastric carcinoma, helminths possess systemic immunomodulatory functions. The immunological, epidemiological, and clinical features of H. pylori and helminth co-infections will be discussed in this review. Key findings include that helminths induce a Th2-biased and regulatory immune response, potentially counteracting

A new species of Pseudoacanthocephalus (Acanthocephala: Pseudoacanthocephalidae) from Sado Island, Japan, with a report of its accidental occurrence in a marine elasmobranch.

Three species of amphibian-parasitic acanthocephalans belonging to the genus Pseudoacanthocephalus Petrochenko, 1958 have been recorded in Japan. However, only a limited number of localities have been surveyed, and the distribution of these congeners across other regions of Japan remains unclear. In this study, acanthocephalans of the genus Pseudoacanthocephalus were recovered from both definitive (Rana ornativentris Werner - type host, and Zhangixalus arboreus [Okada et Kawano]) and accidental hosts (Scyliorhinus torazame [Tanaka]) from Sado Island, Japan. Morphological analyses indicate that

Worldwide prevalence of protozoans and helminths among disabled people: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Parasitic diseases represent a substantial public health concern on a global scale, particularly affecting communities characterized by low socioeconomic status and insufficient sanitation practices. Within these communities, individuals with disabilities are disproportionately impacted. According to the existing literature, it is posited that the prevalence of parasitic infections among disabled individuals is notably high, a factor often neglected when examining the intestinal parasites present in these individuals, alongside the diverse geographical and socioeconomic variations

Costs of parasite generalism revealed by abundance patterns across mammalian hosts.

Most parasites are able to infect several host species, yet generalism is anticipated to be a costly strategy. Parasite abundance provides an important indicator of fitness because it is promoted by longevity and fecundity, which are correlated with a parasite's basic reproductive number. Using a global database of parasitic helminths of terrestrial mammals, we show that the abundance of parasitic helminths is phylogenetically structured across helminth species. High parasite abundance can be achieved through three separate components: infecting abundant host species, having a high infection s

Constructing a Predictive Model for STH and Schistosomiasis Classification From Microscopic Images.

Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) and schistosomiasis are widespread parasitic diseases in tropical regions, particularly in Africa, with substantial health and socioeconomic burdens. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical for mitigating these impacts. Conventional microscopy-based diagnosis was time-consuming and labor-intensive, posing challenges in resource-limited settings such as Ethiopia. This study developed an innovative system that combined machine learning (ML) and deep learning to analyze microscope images of parasite eggs, improving diagnostic speed and accuracy compared to tra

What's worming Egyptian chickens: Morphological and molecular identification of Raillietina echinobothrida and Ascaridia galli in domestic chickens in Egypt.

Gastrointestinal helminths remain a major constraint to poultry production worldwide, causing significant economic losses and threatening food security. In Egypt, the molecular and phylogenetic data on Raillietina echinobothrida and Ascaridia galli are limited in domestic chickens. This study investigated the prevalence, morphology, and genetic characterization of these helminths infecting domestic chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) in Gharbia province, Egypt. Between April 2018 and March 2019, 150 intestinal tracts were collected from slaughterhouses and poultry processing facilities. Helmin

Networking between helminths, microbes, and mammals.

Just as mammals have coevolved with the intestinal bacterial communities that are part of the microbiota, intestinal helminths represent an important selective force on their mammalian host. The complex interaction between helminths, microbes, and their mammalian host is likely an important determinant of mutual fitness. The host immune system in particular is a critical interface with both helminths and the microbiota, and this crosstalk often determines the balance between tolerance and resistance against these widespread parasites. Hence, there are many examples of how both helminths and th

A general framework to support cost-efficient fecal egg count methods and study design choices for large-scale STH deworming programs-monitoring of therapeutic drug efficacy as a case study.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) control programs currently lack evidence-based recommendations for cost-efficient survey designs for monitoring and evaluation. Here, we present a framework to provide evidence-based recommendations, using a case study of therapeutic drug efficacy monitoring based on the examination of helminth eggs in stool. METHODS: We performed an in-depth analysis of the operational costs to process one stool sample for three diagnostic methods (Kato-Katz, Mini-FLOTAC and FECPAKG2). Next, we performed simulations to determine the probability of detecting a truly

Lymphatic filariases and soil-transmitted helminthiases in Sri Lanka: the challenge of eliminating residual pockets of transmission.

Sri Lanka has successfully met the challenge of controlling both lymphatic filariasis (LF) and soil-transmitted helminthiases (STH) as public health problems. The primary public health strategy for combatting both conditions has been preventive chemotherapy. The national programme for the elimination of LF implemented five annual rounds of mass chemotherapy in the endemic districts from 2002 to 2006 using a combination of diethylcarbamazine and albendazole. The overall microfilaria rate declined from 0.21% in 2001 before the mass chemotherapy, to 0.06% in 2016, at declaration of elimination of

Preschool child growth attainment and velocity during an agriculture intervention in rural Panama may be diminished by soil-transmitted helminths.

BACKGROUND: Agricultural interventions are often recommended to address undernutrition in subsistence farming communities. However, intensified agriculture exposure can increase soil transmitted helminth (STH) infections, which are linked with poor child growth. This study examined impacts of the VERASAN public health and agricultural intervention program on preschool child growth attainment (HAZ and WAZ) and relative growth velocity over 7 months [change in height-for-age (∆HAD) and weight-for-age (∆WAD) difference]. METHODS: VERASAN was initiated in 15 subsistence farming communities in rur
