Prevalence, trends, and correlates of HIV, syphilis, and HCV infections among male attendees at STD clinics in Southwest China: a 13-year cross-sectional study (2010-2022).

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) impose a substantial health burden and pose a significant threat to human health. However, data regarding long-term epidemiology patterns of STIs among high-risk groups are scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence, trends, and correlates of HIV, syphilis, and HCV among male attendees at sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics in Southwest China. METHODS: Serial cross-sectional surveys were performed annually among male STD clinic attendees in Southwest China from 2010 to 2022. Blood specimens were collected to test HIV, syphilis

Sexual identity and drug use harm among high-risk, active substance users.

Research shows that sexual minorities are at greater risk for illicit substance use and related harm than their heterosexual counterparts. This study examines a group of active drug users to assess whether sexual identity predicts increased risk of substance use and harm from ecstasy, ketamine, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and crack. Structured interviews were conducted with participants aged 15 years and older in Vancouver and Victoria, BC, Canada, during 2008-2012. Harm was measured with the World Health Organization's AUDIT and ASSIST tools. Regression analysis controlling for age, gender, e

Unraveling the Rectal Virome: Microbial Crosstalk, Immune Modulation, and Clinical Outcomes in People with and Vulnerable to HIV.

The rectal mucosa houses a large number of viruses with important roles in shaping the local microbial communities and modulating immune responses, which could influence host susceptibility to infection and other diseases. Unique composition of the gut microbiome, including the predominance of clinically significant eukaryotic viruses like herpesviruses, cytomegalovirus, and human papillomavirus, has been described in both people with HIV (PWH) and men who have sex with men (MSM) vulnerable to HIV. Despite these insights, the rectal virome and the clinical implications of virome-bacteriome-imm

Prevalence, incidence and risk factors of syphilis among men who have sex with men in China from 2013 to 2025: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Syphilis has re-emerged in China in recent decades, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM). We aimed to assess the prevalence, incidence, and associated factors of syphilis among MSM in China. METHODS: We systematically searched major English (MEDLINE via PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library) and Chinese (CNKI, Wanfang, CBM, VIP, Airiti Library) databases for studies on syphilis prevalence or incidence among MSM in China published from January 1, 2013 to March 1, 2025. Study qualities were evaluated using the Hoy et al.'s risk-of-bias tool and the N

Integrated Online-to-Offline Model of Care for HIV Prevention and Treatment Among Men Who Have Sex With Men in Malaysia: Protocol for an Intervention Development and a Multiphase Trial.

BACKGROUND: HIV continues to have a disproportionate impact on specific populations in Malaysia, particularly men who have sex with men (MSM). HIV self-testing (HIVST) is a strategy that has been shown to scale up HIV testing rates. However, it faces shortcomings because of concerns about self-efficacy, result interpretation, and lack of counseling and linkage to care. This underscores the need for an innovative approach that integrates HIVST with timely counseling, expert guidance, and referrals to enhance engagement in relevant HIV prevention or treatment. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to desc

The Syphilis Pandemic Prior to Penicillin: Origin, Health Issues, Cultural Representation and Ethical Challenges.

Syphilis is currently a treatable disease, with a low incidence in most developed countries, although the prevalence has increased recently, especially among men-who-have-sex-with-men. In many of the least developed countries, however, syphilis is still a major health problem, although the problem is not comparable to the desperate situation worldwide less than 80 years ago. At that time, and for many centuries previously, syphilis dramatically affected the lives and health of individuals and threatened the well-being of many societies. This review examines the aetiology, transmission, and man

Mpox Masquerading as Secondary Syphilis.

Mpox is a great masquerader requiring emergency nurse practitioners to rely on their clinical acumen to accurately diagnose and treat this public health emergency. The disease is nearly indistinguishable from other pox viruses and similar in presentation to several viral and bacterial infections associated with enanthems and exanthems. The most recent outbreak disproportionally affects men who have sex with men, particularly those individuals with HIV. Early recognition and intervention are key; however, clinicians' lack of knowledge, limited access to testing, and unfamiliarity with appropria

Characteristics of Reported Gonorrhea Diagnoses During The COVID-19 Pandemic Compared With Pre-COVID-19 Pandemic, Baltimore City, Maryland.

BACKGROUND: Sexual health service disruptions due to COVID-19 mitigation measures may have decreased gonorrhea screening and biased case-ascertainment toward symptomatic individuals. We assessed changes in reported symptoms and other characteristics among reported gonorrhea cases during pandemic versus prepandemic periods in 1 city with persistent gonorrhea transmission. METHODS: Enhanced surveillance data collected on a random sample of gonorrhea cases reported to the Baltimore City Health Department between March 2018 and September 2021 was used. Logistic regression assessed differences in

Malignant syphilis: a new and revised definition.

Malignant syphilis is a rare, severe variant of secondary syphilis that primarily affects immunocompromised patients. Historically, the clinical presentation included a prodrome of constitutional symptoms followed by the development of characteristic skin lesions. The definition of malignant syphilis has not been updated since it was first described as only a cutaneous manifestation. In recent years, syphilis has reemerged as a major public health issue, particularly in men who have sex with men (MSM) and patients with HIV. With increasing rates of syphilis in the HIV-positive population, the

[The roles of two HIV self-testing models in promoting HIV-testing among men who have sex with men].

Objective: To evaluate the roles between two different HIV self-testing models in promoting HIV-testing among men who have sex with men (MSM). Methods: This paper focuses on two HIV self-testing service models. The first; is the online self-testing model (HIV self-testing conventional model) with the sexual health promotion network platform. The other one is an innovative HIV self-testing model (secondary distribution model), based on the previous program. The two different self-testing models, including the number of indexes and alters, the positive rate, and the demographics of indexes and a

Infectious proctitis due to syphilis and chlamydia: an exuberant presentation.

Infectious proctitis by sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in incidence and should be considered in men who have sex with men with rectal symptoms. In this case, we show an exuberant form of syphilitic and chlamydial proctitis that could be diagnosed as another anorectal disease such as inflammatory proctitis or even as a neoplasm if the clinical history is not taken into account.

A mathematical model of syphilis transmission in an MSM population.

Syphilis is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum, and is a sexually transmitted disease with multiple stages. A model of transmission of syphilis in an MSM population (there has recently been a resurgence of syphilis in such populations) that includes infection stages and treatment is formulated as a system of ordinary differential equations. The control reproduction number is calculated, and it is proved that if this threshold parameter is below one, syphilis dies out; otherwise, if it is greater than one, it is shown that there exists a unique endemic equilibrium an

[Review on the association between social culture and HIV prevalence among MSM in China].

Social culture have significant influence on HIV transmission. Men who have sex with men (MSM), have their own sub-culture, by which made them very different with other population in social norm, behavior mode, as well as some HIV related behavior and the disease transmission risk. Up to date, study focused on the association between social culture and HIV transmission among MSM was limited, thus we reviewed relevant studies in the view of social culture and sub-culture of MSM, analyzed how social culture could potentially influence HIV transmission, and how sub-culture could affect MSM's frie
