Two exemplary cases of minimal and extensive dismemberment.

Dismemberment is the voluntary removal of body parts after death, and today it is very often associated with criminal activity (murder). It can be distinguished as localised or generalised, depending on whether one or a few pieces are separated from the body or multiple pieces are involved. In another classification, dismemberment is divided into defensive, aggressive, offensive and necromantic, based on the psychological motivation of the perpetrator. A dismembered body poses a series of difficulties for the forensic pathologist because it is often difficult to establish the cause and time of

Screening for familial cancer risk: Focus on breast cancer.

A breast or an ovarian cancer occurring at a young age and/or in a family where other cases preexist suggests that those patients should be candidates for screening for mutations. Despite decades of medical research, less than 30% of cases with a suggestive personal and/or family history of hereditary breast cancer have an identified causative gene mutation. The vast majority of these cases are due to a mutation in one of the highly penetrant breast cancer genes (BRCA1, BRCA2, PTEN, TP53, CDH1, and STK11) and various guidelines direct the management of these patients. A minority of cases are d

Providing Adaptation Solutions to the Problems Faced by Adoptive Families.

BACKGROUND: Adoption is frequently viewed as a way to complete the family because of the infertility that some families experience and the desire for kids and teenagers, especially orphans, to have a loving family. AIMS: This work intends to identify and propose adaptation solutions to address the psychological problems faced by adoptive families. By doing so, it is hoped that the mental health and overall well-being of individuals and society as a whole will be enhanced. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the first stage of this study, the grounded theory approach based on Strauss and Corbin's metho

Workplace gaslighting in nursing practice: a concept analysis.

BACKGROUND: Gaslighting is a subtle and insidious form of psychological abuse in the workplace that operates through the distortion or denial of reality and the induction of cognitive doubt, ultimately undermining individuals' confidence in their perceptions and professional judgment. Although the concept has gained increasing attention in organizational and psychological literature, gaslighting remains theoretically underdeveloped and conceptually ambiguous within nursing practice. It is frequently conflated with related phenomena such as workplace bullying, psychological violence, or incivil

The Impact of Functionality and Psychological Outcome on Social Engagement 3-months after Intracerebral Hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Although it is well-known that intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is associated with physical and psychological morbidity, there is scant data on factors influencing social engagement after ICH. Understanding the relationship between functionality, psychological outcome and social engagement post-bleed may facilitate identification of patients at high risk for social isolation after ICH. METHODS: Patients ≥18-years-old with non-traumatic ICH from January 2015-March 2023 were identified from the Neurological Emergencies Outcomes at NYU (NEON) registry. Data on discharge functionality w

A perspective on precision therapeutics in polycystic ovary syndrome: integrating multi-omics, AI-driven stratification, and emerging biologics.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most prevalent and heterogeneous disorders in reproductive endocrinology, contributing to substantial reproductive, metabolic, and psychological morbidity. Despite major advances in genomics, neuroendocrinology, and systems biology, translation into disease-modifying therapies remains limited. This Perspective argues for a strategic shift toward precision medicine, supported by molecular subtyping, multi-omics profiling, and artificial intelligence (AI). These tools now enable biologically informed patient stratification and the identification of

The African Rhinoplasty.

Across ethnicities, patients seeking rhinoplasty have similar goals-a natural looking nose that fits and complements the rest of their facial features. Beyond a harmonious nose, patients of African descent have a particularly strong desire for ethnically congruent results in spite of individual aesthetic rhinoplasty preferences. This strong appeal for ethnically sensitive alterations is fueled by the desire to maintain physical identification with one's African ethnicity. There are psychosocial penalties when rhinoplasty outcomes stray toward complete racial transformation. Consequently, rhino

Intimate Partner Violence and Orthopaedics: AOA Critical Issues.

One in 50 women presenting to an orthopaedic clinic with an injury have been injured from intimate partner violence (IPV). This number does not include the additional patients who have experienced psychological or emotional abuse. Musculoskeletal injuries, such as fractures, sprains, strains, and dislocations, are the second-most prevalent injury type after head and neck injuries that occur after physical violence. Therefore, it is incumbent on health-care workers who provide care in fracture clinics to recognize musculoskeletal manifestations of IPV. Given the serial follow-up assessments for

Diagnosis and management of Children with Post-Intensive Care Syndrome in Paediatrics: Clinical Practice Guidelines by the French National Authority for Health (HAS).

OBJECTIVE: Advances in paediatric intensive care have resulted in a growing population of survivors exposed to long-term morbidity. Paediatric post-intensive care syndrome (PICS-p) encompasses new or worsened physical, cognitive, psychological/psychiatric, and socio-familial impairments that may affect children and their families after discharge from the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Despite increasing recognition of PICS-p, post-PICU follow-up remains highly heterogeneous worldwide, and systematic screening and management strategies are rarely integrated into routine care. These guid

Design and Validation of an AI-Assisted Sequential Screening Framework for Psychological Distress in Glaucoma.

PURPOSE: Psychological distress is highly prevalent in glaucoma and is associated with worse adherence, reduced quality of life, and faster disease progression. However, distress is rarely assessed in ophthalmology settings due to time, workflow, and staffing constraints. We evaluated two artificial intelligence (AI)-based screening strategies, designed to efficiently identify distressed primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) patients during routine care, aiming to achieve effective, resource conscious, low burden clinical screening. DESIGN: Hybrid retrospective cohort and prospective cross-secti

[Coordination between Primary Care and the Primary Care Clinical Psychology Program (PSICAP) for the Detection and Management of Suicidal Behavior: Recommendations for Good Clinical Practice].

Suicidal behavior is a major public health concern and one of the leading causes of preventable death worldwide. Primary care plays a strategic role in suicide prevention owing to its accessibility, continuity of care, and longitudinal knowledge of patients, facilitating the early identification of individuals at risk. Collaboration with the Primary Care Clinical Psychology Program (PSICAP) strengthens this approach through continuous professional training, clinical consultation, and the establishment of shared criteria for assessment, follow-up, and referral. This paper provides evidence-base

Presentations of Cutaneous Disease in Various Skin Pigmentations: Keratosis Pilaris.

Description Keratosis pilaris (KP) is a common benign disorder involving hyperkeratosis of the skin. It is associated with other common dry skin disorders such as atopic dermatitis and ichthyosis vulgaris. Lesions are clinically characterized as symmetrically distributed, monomorphic, folliculocentric, hyperkeratotic papules with a variable degree of perifollicular erythema. The appearance can be likened to spikey bumps that are commonly located on the arms, legs, and buttocks. Awareness of KP is important as every primary care clinician will see patients with this disorder. Identification can

The importance of the individual's micro-environment in drug consumption : A novel conceptual framework applied to the modeling of binge drinking.

The identification of psychosocial risk and protective factors associated with substance use during adolescence is crucial for the prevention and treatment of addictive behaviors. However, in the mathematical modeling of addictions, these psychological and social dimensions are often addressed in isolation. By focusing on the immediate socialization environment of adolescents, comprising peers, parents and family, and school, and considering them as risk and protective factors, we mathematically model binge drinking behavior from interaction dynamics among individuals and their predisposition

Historical Consciousness: Recollections of Major Historical Events in the Personal Life Story.

How do people incorporate collective major historical events into their personal life stories? This study investigates the concept of historical consciousness, which is the extent to which individuals integrate the recollection of major historical events into their narrative identity in personally meaningful ways. A sample of 134 midlife adults were asked to describe in detail two major historical events, social movements, or societal changes that impacted them and explain their personal significance. Individual differences in the degree to which the participants incorporated these collective

Psychiatric and Neurological Manifestations of Celiac Disease in Adults.

Celiac disease (CD), a chronic inflammatory disorder of the intestines, affects 0.7% to 1.4% of the world's population. CD causes diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, bloating, flatulence, and, in rare cases, constipation in the digestive tract. Since the identification of gluten as the disease-causing antigen, CD patients have been treated with a gluten-free diet, which is advantageous but has limitations for certain patient groups. CD is associated with mood disorders, such as manic-depressive disease, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder, as well as other disorders such as depression and anxiety.

The intersection of social determinants of health and family care of people living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias: A public health opportunity.

In this Perspective article, we highlight current research to illustrate the intersection of social determinants of health (SDOHs) and Alzheimer's disease and related dementia (ADRD) caregiving. We then outline how public health can support ADRD family caregivers in the United States. Emerging research suggests that family care for persons with ADRD is influenced by SDOHs. Public health actions that address these intersections such as improved surveillance and identification of ADRD caregivers; building and enhancing community partnerships; advancing dementia-capable health care and related pa

Virtual Assessment of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students in the Schools.

The COVID-19 pandemic placed stress on all aspects of the educational system. Many state departments of education acknowledged the disruption to individualized education program evaluation and implementation but insisted that evaluation timelines and services continue undisrupted. School psychologists were therefore forced to navigate the viability of virtual assessment without established research supporting this type of student evaluation. Formal assessments used in the identification of learning disabilities and other areas of disability were not standardized with virtual administration pro

What is new in adult acne for the last 2 years: focus on acne pathophysiology and treatments.

Acne affects more than 640 million people worldwide, including about 85% of adolescents. This inflammatory dermatosis affects the entire population, from teenagers to adults, which reinforces the need to investigate it. Furthermore, in adults, acne has serious consequences, including a psychological impact, low self-esteem, social isolation, and depression. Over the last years, the understanding of acne pathophysiology has improved, mainly thanks to the identification of the pivotal role of the microbiota. The aim of this review was to screen the most recent scientific literature on adult acne
