Improved diagnostic confidence in evaluating bone non-union using virtual monochromatic dual-energy CT.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine whether virtual monochromatic dual-energy CT imaging improves the evaluation of suspected non-union of the appendicular skeleton treated with titanium or stainless steel intramedullary nails and plates. METHOD: Forty-one patients with a clinical suspected non-union with hardware in place were included and scanned on a dual-source CT-scanner using 100/Sn150kVp. Images including titanium hardware were extracted at 130 keV. Images including stainless steel hardware were extracted at 150 keV. Monochromatic 70 keV images served as reference. Non-unio

Automated Analysis for Retinopathy of Prematurity by Deep Neural Networks.

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a retinal vasproliferative disorder disease principally observed in infants born prematurely with low birth weight. ROP is an important cause of childhood blindness. Although automatic or semi-automatic diagnosis of ROP has been conducted, most previous studies have focused on "plus" disease, which is indicated by abnormalities of retinal vasculature. Few studies have reported methods for identifying the "stage" of the ROP disease. Deep neural networks have achieved impressive results in many computer vision and medical image analysis problems, raising expec

Influence of gantry rotation time and scan mode on image quality in ultra-high-resolution CT system.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the image quality of helical scan (HS) mode and non-helical scan (non-HS) mode on ultra-high-resolution CT in different gantry rotation time. METHODS: non-HS with 0.35 s/rot (non-HS200 mA/0.35 s). Three observers compared each non-HS image with HS image, and scored non-HS images by using 3-point scale, paying attention to normal findings, abnormal findings, noise, streak artifact, and overall image quality. Statistical analysis was performed with Steel-Dwass test. RESULTS: Overall image quality (score: 2.45) and noise (score: 2.42) of non-HS 200 mA/1.5s was statist

FissureNet: A Deep Learning Approach For Pulmonary Fissure Detection in CT Images.

Pulmonary fissure detection in computed tomography (CT) is a critical component for automatic lobar segmentation. The majority of fissure detection methods use feature descriptors that are hand-crafted, low-level, and have local spatial extent. The design of such feature detectors is typically targeted toward normal fissure anatomy, yielding low sensitivity to weak, and abnormal fissures that are common in clinical data sets. Furthermore, local features commonly suffer from low specificity, as the complex textures in the lung can be indistinguishable from the fissure when the global context is

Dose and Image Quality in Low-dose CT for Urinary Stone Disease: Added Value of Automatic Tube Current Modulation and Iterative Reconstruction Techniques.

The aim of this study was to compare dose and image quality (IQ) of a baseline low-dose computed tomography (CT) (fix mAs) vs. an ultra-low-dose CT (automatic tube current modulation, ATCM) in patients with suspected urinary stone disease and to assess the added value of iterative reconstruction. CT examination was performed on 193 patients (103 baseline low-dose, 90 ultra-low-dose). Filtered back projection (FBP) was used for both protocols, and Sinogram Affirmed Iterative Reconstruction (SAFIRE) was used for the ultra-low-dose protocol only. Dose and ureter stones information were collected

Abdominal aortic aneurysms revisited: MDCT with multiplanar reconstructions for identifying indicators of instability in the pre- and postoperative patient.

Rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm is commonly a fatal event. Multidetector computed tomographic (CT) signs of frank aortic rupture are usually readily apparent and widely understood. However, diagnosing an impending aortic rupture on the basis of imaging findings can prove more difficult. CT is the primary modality used for serial imaging in patients with aortic aneurysm and may show findings indicative of aortic instability. Therefore, it is critical that radiologists be familiar with the CT findings of aortic instability to avert the potential complications of hemorrhage, end organ or

Quantitative computed tomography.

Quantitative computed tomography (QCT) was introduced in the mid 1970s. The technique is most commonly applied to 2D slices in the lumbar spine to measure trabecular bone mineral density (BMD; mg/cm(3)). Although not as widely utilized as dual-energy X-ray absortiometry (DXA) QCT has some advantages when studying the skeleton (separate measures of cortical and trabecular BMD; measurement of volumetric, as opposed to 'areal' DXA-BMDa, so not size dependent; geometric and structural parameters obtained which contribute to bone strength). A limitation is that the World Health Organisation (WHO) d

Maximum intensity projection of cranial computed tomography data for dental identification.

Dental radiographs play the major role in the identification of victims in mass casualties besides DNA. Under circumstances such as those caused by the recent tsunami in Asia, it is nearly impossible to document the entire dentition using conventional x-rays as it would be too time consuming. Multislice computed tomography can be used to scan the dentition of a deceased within minutes, and the postprocessing software allows visualization of the data adapted to every possible antemortem x-ray for identification. We introduce the maximum intensity projection of cranial computed tomography data f

A generative adversarial network-based abnormality detection using only normal images for model training with application to digital breast tomosynthesis.

Deep learning has shown tremendous potential in the task of object detection in images. However, a common challenge with this task is when only a limited number of images containing the object of interest are available. This is a particular issue in cancer screening, such as digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), where less than 1% of cases contain cancer. In this study, we propose a method to train an inpainting generative adversarial network to be used for cancer detection using only images that do not contain cancer. During inference, we removed a part of the image and used the network to comp

A desk top computer program for visualized statistical analysis of lesional images in intracerebral hemorrhage.

Statistically identified information on the relationships between the sites of lesions in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), risk factors such as a smoking or drinking habit, anamnesis, and biochemical data through blood tests will extend assistance to neuromedical clinicians on their daily clinical duties. It will provide them with a useful guide to determine the method of treatment. Also, it will be a basic research material for their clinical studies on diagnosis, progress, or prognosis in ICH. In order to obtain such statistics with the help of the computer, we need to have a computationally

Assessment of low-dose paranasal sinus CT imaging using a new deep learning image reconstruction technique in children compared to adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction V (ASiR-V).

PURPOSE: To compare the effects of deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR) and adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction V (ASiR-V) on image quality in low-dose computed tomography (CT) of paranasal sinuses in children. METHODS: Low-dose CT scans of the paranasal sinuses in 25 pediatric patients were retrospectively evaluated. The raw data were reconstructed with three levels of DLIR (high, H; medium, M; and low, L), filtered back projection (FBP), and ASiR-V (30% and 50%). Image noise was measured in both soft tissue and bone windows, and the signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and contrast-

Potential lung nodules identification for characterization by variable multistep threshold and shape indices from CT images.

Computed tomography (CT) is an important imaging modality. Physicians, surgeons, and oncologists prefer CT scan for diagnosis of lung cancer. However, some nodules are missed in CT scan. Computer aided diagnosis methods are useful for radiologists for detection of these nodules and early diagnosis of lung cancer. Early detection of malignant nodule is helpful for treatment. Computer aided diagnosis of lung cancer involves lung segmentation, potential nodules identification, features extraction from the potential nodules, and classification of the nodules. In this paper, we are presenting an au

The applications of non-ECG-gated MSCT angiography in children with congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: To minimize radiation exposure during a multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) examination in children with congenital heart disease (CHD), we assessed diagnostic value and the various applications of MSCT without electrocardiography (ECG)-gated image acquisition. METHODS: Three-dimensional (3D) images were reconstructed to include volume rendering and differential color-coding of the arteries and veins. The vessel diameter in MSCT was measured with CT attenuation profiles and compared with that of angiography. Ventricular volumetry was initially validated by phantom experiment an

Computer-aided diagnostic scheme for the detection of lung nodules on chest radiographs: localized search method based on anatomical classification.

We developed an advanced computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) scheme for the detection of various types of lung nodules on chest radiographs intended for implementation in clinical situations. We used 924 digitized chest images (992 noncalcified nodules) which had a 500 x 500 matrix size with a 1024 gray scale. The images were divided randomly into two sets which were used for training and testing of the computerized scheme. In this scheme, the lung field was first segmented by use of a ribcage detection technique, and then a large search area (448 x 448 matrix size) within the chest image was auto

[Unenhanced spiral CT in urolithiasis: indication, performance and interpretation].

Unenhanced spiral computed tomography is now applied in the investigation of patients with acute flank pain to search for suspected urinary tract calculi. Spiral CT can depict urinary calculi more accurately than plain radiographs, sonography or excretory urography, and can be performed using a low dose protocol. Almost all urinary calculi, including calculi composed of uric acid, xanthine and cystine, can be detected. In addition to determining size and location of the stone, unenhanced helical CT can predict its composition. Furthermore, it reveals secondary signs of obstruction, such as dil

DFuse-Net: Disentangled feature fusion with uncertainty-aware learning for reliable multi-modal brain tumor segmentation.

Accurate brain tumor segmentation from multi-modal MRI is critical for clinical diagnosis and treatment planning. However, effectively exploiting the complementary information across different modalities remains challenging due to modality-specific noise, semantic inconsistency and inherent model uncertainty. To tackle these issues, we propose a Disentangled Fusion Network named DFuse-Net that integrates disentangled feature fusion with uncertainty-aware learning for reliable multi-modal brain tumor segmentation. Specifically, DFuse-Net explicitly disentangles modality-shared and modality-spec
