Exploring Media Portrayals of Individuals With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Considering past evidence highlighting the role of media portrayal in shaping community attitudes towards people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), we analyzed depictions of IDD in seven television shows and three movies. Characters with IDD were coded based on categories representing (a) their attributes (demographic, disability-related, and personality), (b) the salience of IDD and character with IDD, (c) treatment by other characters, and (d) quality of life. The majority of the characters were White and male, and persons with IDD played characters with visible disabili

Social Isolation Among Individuals with Incontinence: A Scoping Review.

Introduction: Urinary and fecal incontinence, as well as the presence of an ostomy, are globally prevalent conditions with substantial implications for individuals' daily lives. Among the psychological consequences, social isolation is a frequently reported experience but remains poorly explored in the existing literature. The aim of this scoping review is to explore how social isolation has been conceptualized and operationalized in research on individuals with incontinence and to synthesize evidence on its antecedents and outcomes. Methods: This review was conducted in accordance with the Jo

Facilitators and barriers to care among individuals with osteogenesis imperfecta.

OBJECTIVES: Limited research has examined facilitators and barriers that affect patient care in osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). The present study seeks to identify (1) facilitators and (2) barriers to care as reported by medical providers and caregivers of individuals with OI, and (3) common themes between both stakeholder groups. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted to assess treatment access, treatment quality, knowledge of OI, and patient mental health. Transcripts were coded, and salient themes were abstracted using thematic analysis to find themes related to barriers and faci

Individualizing Management of Pregnancy of Unknown Location and Uncertain Prognosis.

Pregnancy of unknown location is a temporary physiologic state of early pregnancy with a positive but no ultrasound findings of pregnancy, while pregnancy of uncertain prognosis is an early intrauterine pregnancy without cardiac activity. A broad differential and swift diagnosis are important to limit the morbidity and mortality associated with ectopic pregnancy. Knowledge of available management options along with patient-centered approaches is important to improve clinical provision of care, although this may be limited by state and institutional policies.

Reliability of an upper limb isokinetic evaluation in healthy individuals.

BACKGROUND: Muscle strength is a key functionality indicator and can be objectively assessed using isokinetic dynamometry (IKD). However, IKD evaluation of the upper limb remains clinically challenging as in research settings. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the test-retest reliability of IKD measurements for the shoulder, elbow, forearm, and wrist at different speeds, as well as for isometric handgrip strength. METHODS: Isokinetic strength and isometric handgrip assessments were performed using the Biodex System 4 Pro™ and the Jamar™ dynamometer. Participants were tested twice with a 7-day interval.

Evaluating Activity Levels in Individuals with TBI using IMU.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is one of the leading causes of sensorimotor deficits in adults and often results in gait deficits. In this context, inertial measurement units (IMU) have emerged as an effective tool for objectively quantifying activity levels. This work evaluates IMU-derived activity levels using activity counts from ankles, wrists, and sacrum during walking and stair climbing tasks in individuals with TBI and healthy controls, and relates these counts to functional measures (timed up and go, dynamic gait index, and gait speed). Results show that TBI participants had reduced acti

Microbiome analysis in individuals with human papillomavirus oral infection.

Microbiome gained attention as a cofactor in cancers originating from epithelial tissues. High-risk (hr)HPV infection causes oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma but only in a fraction of hrHPV+ individuals, suggesting that other factors play a role in cancer development. We investigated oral microbiome in cancer-free subjects harboring hrHPV oral infection (n = 33) and matched HPV- controls (n = 30). DNA purified from oral rinse-and-gargles of HIV-infected (HIV+) and HIV-uninfected (HIV-) individuals were used for 16S rRNA gene V3-V4 region amplification and sequencing. Analysis of different

Unraveling the impact of congenital deafness on individual brain organization.

Research on brain plasticity, particularly in the context of deafness, consistently emphasizes the reorganization of the auditory cortex. But to what extent do all individuals with deafness show the same level of reorganization? To address this question, we examined the individual differences in functional connectivity (FC) from the deprived auditory cortex. Our findings demonstrate remarkable differentiation between individuals deriving from the absence of shared auditory experiences, resulting in heightened FC variability among deaf individuals, compared to more consistent FC in the hearing

How to effectively treat arterial hypertension in elderly individuals?

Hypertension is the most common cardiovascular risk factor in older adults, significantly contributing to morbidity and mortality. Its prevalence rises with age and is strongly associated with vascular aging, isolated systolic hypertension, and comorbidities, such as cognitive impairment and chronic kidney disease. However, treatment in older adults-especially those with frailty-requires a careful balance between benefit and potential harm. This review aimed to provide an updated synthesis of pathophysiological mechanisms, epidemiological trends, diagnostic considerations, and evidence‑based t

Symptom Clusters in Individuals Seeking Treatment for Gambling Disorder.

Gambling Disorder (GD), diagnostically, is a unidimensional construct where each additional symptom corresponds to increased severity. Many individuals experience addiction symptoms in specific symptom clusters, with membership to one profile of symptoms or other better representing disorder severity than raw symptom counts. This study explored whether similarly informative symptom clusters exist among adults seeking treatment for gambling harms. The sample included 440 adults seeking treatment for gambling disorder who completed an assessment of diagnostic criteria at intake. Three distinct c

Is the convergence insufficiency symptom survey applicable to elderly individuals?

BACKGROUND: The psychometric properties of the Convergence Insufficiency Symptom Survey (CISS) have been previously determined across the younger adult population. This study investigated the psychometric properties of the CISS in presbyopic adults via classical and Rasch analysis. METHODS: A total of 100 presbyopic individuals (40-60 years) were selected with far and near acuity of 20/20 with their habitual spectacles; 50 had convergence insufficiency and 50 had normal binocular vision. Refraction, cover test, near point of convergence, and positive fusional ranges were examined. The Persian

A case of clozapine-induced stuttering in a HIV-positive individual.

INTRODUCTION: Stuttering, a speech disorder marked by disruptions in fluency, can be developmental or acquired. Acquired stuttering often stems from neurological causes, psychological trauma or certain medications, with antipsychotics such as clozapine implicated in several cases. Clozapine, particularly at higher doses, has been associated with dose-dependent stuttering although the precise mechanisms remain uncertain. While clozapine's effects dopamine pathways and seizure thresholds are proposed mechanisms, movement disorders such as focal dystonia and prior extrapyramidal symptoms (EPSEs)

Patient-Reported Distress in Individuals With Head and Neck Cancer.

IMPORTANCE: Distress is common among patients with cancer, and evidence of disparities associated with distress has been mixed. Head and neck cancer (HNC) is one of the most emotionally distressing cancers and is also a highly disparate disease. However, it is unknown whether there are disparities associated with patient-reported distress in HNC. OBJECTIVE: To examine racial and sociodemographic factors associated with clinically meaningful distress in a cohort of patients with HNC. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed data from a single tertiary instit
