Ending preventable newborn deaths in a generation.

The end of the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) era was marked in 2015, and while maternal and child mortality have been halved, MGD 4 and MDG 5 are off-track at the global level. Reductions in neonatal death rates (age <1 month) lag behind those for post-neonates (age 1-59 months), and stillbirth rates (omitted from the MDGs) have been virtually unchanged. Hence, almost half of under-five deaths are newborns, yet about 80% of these are preventable using cost-effective interventions. The Every Newborn Action Plan has been endorsed by the World Health Assembly and ratified by many stakeholders

Outcomes of singleton small for gestational age preterm infants exposed to maternal hypertension: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are a major cause of small for gestational age (SGA). Preterm SGA infants have higher rates of adverse outcomes than appropriate for gestational age infants. However, the outcomes are not well established in the setting of HDP. METHODS: Retrospective population-based study using the Canadian Neonatal Network database from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2016 of SGA infants <33 weeks gestation. Using multivariable models, we determined the adjusted odds ratios (AORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for mortality, bronchopulmonary dysplas

[Perinatal mortality in Brazil in 2018: an epidemiological analysis according to the modified Wigglesworth classification].

Perinatal mortality includes fetal mortality and early neonatal mortality (0 to 6 days of life). The study described perinatal deaths in Brazil in 2018 according to the modified Wigglesworth classification. The data sources were the Brazilian Mortality Information System and the Brazilian Information System on Live Births. Fetal mortality and perinatal mortality rates were calculated per 1,000 total births (live births plus stillbirths) and the early neonatal mortality rate per 1,000 live births, compared using their respective 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). Perinatal deaths were classified

Increased mortality among women who drank alcohol during pregnancy.

Women giving birth to children with fetal alcohol syndrome have a higher risk of early mortality. However, the risk of increased mortality associated with drinking at lower levels during pregnancy has not been evaluated previously. Accordingly, mortality at 20 years post recruitment was examined in a sample (N=570) of women recruited between 1980 and 1986, who drank more than 1 ounce of absolute alcohol per week (oz AA/wk) during pregnancy and compared to that in abstainers from the same low socioeconomic, African-American population. Not Crying After Birth as a Predictor of Not Breathing.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, every year, 6 to 10 million infants require resuscitation at birth according to estimates based on limited data regarding "nonbreathing" infants. In this article, we aim to describe the incidence of "noncrying" and nonbreathing infants after birth, the need for basic resuscitation with bag-and-mask ventilation, and death before discharge. METHODS: We conducted an observational study of 19 977 infants in 4 hospitals in Nepal. We analyzed the incidence of noncrying or nonbreathing infants after birth. The sensitivity of noncrying infants with nonbreathing after birth was

Mortality Among Parents of Children With Major Congenital Anomalies.

BACKGROUND: A mother whose child has a chronic condition, such as a major congenital anomaly, often experiences poorer long-term health, including earlier mortality. Little is known about the long-term health of fathers of infants with a major congenital anomaly. METHODS: In this population-based prospective cohort study, we used individual-linked Danish registry data. Included were all mothers and fathers with a singleton infant born January 1, 1986, to December 31, 2015. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to generate hazard ratios for all-cause and cause-specific mortality among m

Association between hypothermia in the first day of life and survival in the preterm infant.

OBJECTIVE: Hypothermia is associated with elevated mortality in the preterm infant. The preterm infant's thermoregulatory capacity is limited, and the thermal environment in an incubator is often perturbed by nursing procedures. We evaluated the incidence of a postnatal low body temperature and hypothermia in preterm infants and its association with mortality. METHODS: We measured the lowest body temperature during the first 24h of life (TBody Nadir 24h) and hypothermia (TBody Nadir 24h<36.0°C) in preterm infants (gestational age: 230-316 weeks) in a neonatal intensive care unit. Education and infant survival in rural Bangladesh.

This paper explores the mechanism through which socioeconomic status affects infant deaths. The data used here come from a prospective study in rural Bangladesh. Both neonatal deaths and postneonatal deaths were found to be higher in number among those whose mothers have no schooling. Again, education of the mother has been found to be related to gestational month at termination and this gestational month at termination (which is the maturity of the newborn) determines the neonatal death. The other factors affecting infant mortality were the height of the mother and the weight of the infant. T…
