Laboratory evaluation of five pesticides for control of Leptotrombidium fletcheri (Acari: Trombiculidae).

Five pesticides were evaluated against laboratory colonies of Leptotrombidium fletcheri (Womersly and Heaslip) by the Pasteur pipet technique. The pesticides were dieldrin (LC50 = 3.6 ppm, LC99 = 18.2 ppm), bromopropylate (LC50 = 9.2 ppm, LC99 = 239.6 ppm), dicofol (LC50 = 27.8 ppm, LC99 = 118.1 ppm), fenthion (LC50 = 15.4 ppm, LC99 = 29.7 ppm), and malathion (LC50 = 84.7 ppm, LC99 = 313.9 ppm). Dieldrin was the most toxic. Dicofol was recommended for further evaluation in field trials.

Entomopathogenic fungi for mosquito control: a review.

Fungal diseases in insects are common and widespread and can decimate their populations in spectacular epizootics. Virtually all insect orders are susceptible to fungal diseases, including Dipterans. Fungal pathogens such as Lagenidium, Coelomomyces and Culicinomyces are known to affect mosquito populations, and have been studied extensively. There are, however, many other fungi that infect and kill mosquitoes at the larval and/or adult stage. The discovery, in 1977, of the selective mosquito-pathogenic bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner israelensis (Bti) curtailed widespread interest i

Household papular urticaria.

BACKGROUND: Papular urticaria often occurs after bites of insects such as mosquitoes, sandflies, bed bugs and fleas. Multiple bites and local pruritus are characteristic symptoms. Treatment is usually symptomatic and includes antihistamines and corticosteroids. The reappearance of the symptoms can be prevented by successful control of the parasite. OBJECTIVES: To find the causative agent of papular urticaria in afflicted households with involvement of numerous family members, all in a narrow geographic area. PATIENTS: We describe the cases of 20 patients belonging to seven families, who pres

Dual role of the Anopheles coluzzii Venus Kinase Receptor in both larval growth and immunity.

Vector-borne diseases and especially malaria are responsible for more than half million deaths annually. The increase of insecticide resistance in wild populations of Anopheles malaria vectors emphasises the need for novel vector control strategies as well as for identifying novel vector targets. Venus kinase receptors (VKRs) constitute a Receptor Tyrosine Kinase (RTK) family only found in invertebrates. In this study we functionally characterized Anopheles VKR in the Gambiae complex member, Anopheles coluzzii. Results showed that Anopheles VKR can be activated by L-amino acids, with L-arginin

Mechanical transmission of Bacillus anthracis by stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans) and mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti and Aedes taeniorhynchus).

We evaluated the potential of stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans, and two species of mosquitoes, Aedes aegypti and Aedes taeniorhynchus, to transmit Bacillus anthracis Vollum 1B mechanically. After probing on Hartley guinea pigs with a bacteremia of ca. 10(8.6) CFU of B. anthracis per ml of blood, individual or pools of two to four stable flies or mosquitoes were allowed to continue feeding on either uninfected guinea pigs or A/J mice. All three insect species transmitted lethal anthrax infections to both guinea pigs and mice. Both stable flies and mosquitoes transmitted anthrax, even when they

Mechanisms mediating false codling moth, Thaumatotibia leucotreta (lepidoptera: Tortricidae), mating disruption using point-source pheromone dispensers.

BACKGROUND: False codling moth (FCM) is a polyphagous Tortricid moth that is a priority agricultural pest. Mating disruption shows potential as an environmentally friendly and sustainable control option against FCM in stone fruit, table grapes and citrus. How the technique alters the mate-finding ability of FCM and what factors are important to ensure the control success is uncertain. Recent work indicated that Lepidoptera are disrupted either competitively or non-competitively. No studies have yet been conducted on FCM to determine its disruptive mechanism. However, studies conducted on close

Efficacy of Spatial Repellents in Malaria Prevention: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

The efficacy of spatial repellents in preventing malaria infections is unclear. In the present study, a meta-analysis of four randomized controlled trials conducted in China, Indonesia, and Kenya, involving 6,745 participants, was conducted to assess the efficacy of spatial repellents in reducing malaria infections. The risk of malaria infection was lower with the use of spatial repellents (681 [20.0%] of 3,399 participants) compared with controls (1,055 [31.0%] of 3,346 participants), resulting in a 52% risk reduction (pooled risk ratio: 0.48; 95% CI: 0.33 to 0.70; P <0.001). Go big or go home: A model-based assessment of general strategies to slow the spread of forest pests via infested firewood.

Invasive pests, such as emerald ash borer or Asian longhorn beetle, have been responsible for unprecedented ecological and economic damage in eastern North America. These and other wood-boring invasive insects can spread to new areas through human transport of untreated firewood. Behaviour, such as transport of firewood, is affected not only by immediate material benefits and costs, but also by social forces. Potential approaches to reduce the spread of wood-boring pests through firewood include raising awareness of the problem and increasing the social costs of the damages incurred by transpo

Dechorionation and Permeabilization of Podisus nigrispinus (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) Eggs: Limiting Factors for Cryopreservation.

Cryopreservation protocols have been developed for eggs of Diptera, Lepidoptera, and Hymenoptera; however, for Heteroptera, such as Podisus nigrispinus Dallas, 1851 (Pentatomidae), no procedures have been described yet. The objective of this study was to evaluate the processes of dechorionation and permeabilization on the viability of eggs of P. nigrispinus with different embryonic ages. In the laboratory, embryos of 24, 48, 72, and 96 h of age were submitted to sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite, isopropyl, and hexane solutions for dechorionation and permeabilization. The experiment was ca

Evaluation of mass trapping and mating disruption for managing Prionus californicus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) in hop production yards.

Larvae of Prionus californicus Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) feed on the roots of many types of woody perennial crops and are serious pests of hop in the northwestern United States. The adult males are strongly attracted to a volatile sex pheromone, (3R,5S)-3,5-dimethyldodecanoic acid, that is produced by females. Here, we summarize the results of field experiments that evaluated the potential for using the synthetic pheromone (in a blend of all four possible stereoisomers) to manage infestations of P. californicus in commercial hop yards by mass trapping or mating disruption. Our res

Contributions of Anopheles larval control to malaria suppression in tropical Africa: review of achievements and potential.

Malaria vector control targeting the larval stages of mosquitoes was applied successfully against many species of Anopheles (Diptera: Culicidae) in malarious countries until the mid-20th Century. Since the introduction of DDT in the 1940s and the associated development of indoor residual spraying (IRS), which usually has a more powerful impact than larval control on vectorial capacity, the focus of malaria prevention programmes has shifted to the control of adult vectors. In the Afrotropical Region, where malaria is transmitted mainly by Anopheles funestus Giles and members of the Anopheles ga

Hydrogen cyanide-producing rhizobacteria kill subterranean termite Odontotermes obesus (Rambur) by cyanide poisoning under in vitro conditions.

The subterranean termite Odontotermes obesus is an important pest of the Indian subcontinent, causing extensive damage to major agricultural crops and forest plantation trees. Control of termites by strategies employing their parasites has limitations because they have evolved a complex social structure, immune responses, and adaptive behavior toward pathogen-infected individuals. Nonparasitic rhizobacteria that produce harmful metabolites might facilitate the biocontrol of termites. In the present investigation, three different species of hydrogen cyanide-producing rhizobacteria were tested f

Environmental sanitary interventions for preventing active trachoma.

BACKGROUND: Trachoma is the second or third major cause of blindness. It is responsible for about six million blind people worldwide, mostly in the poor communities of developing countries. One of the major strategies advocated for the control of the disease is the application of various environmental sanitary measures to such communities. OBJECTIVES: To assess the evidence for the effectiveness of environmental sanitary measures on the prevalence of active trachoma in endemic areas. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials - CENTRAL (which contains the

Evaluation of the CatanDog's tag to prevent flea infestations, inhibit flea reproduction or repel existing flea infestations on cats.

To evaluate the ability of the CatanDog's tag to eliminate fleas, inhibit egg production and prevent flea infestations, six domestic shorthaired cats were randomly allocated to two treatment groups and housed individually in stainless steel metabolic cages. Three cats were each fitted with a CatanDog's tag; the other three cats were not fitted with tags and served as controls. Following a 42-day acclimation period, each of the six cats was infested with 100, 1-3 day post-emergence, adult Ctenocephalides felis felis (Bouché) on days 0, 7, 14, 21, and 27. [Bovine setariasis (Note I):trap for the capture of possible intermediate hosts of Setaria labiatopapillosa].

The authors describe a trap utilized in the field to catch possible intermediate hosts of Setaria labiatopapillosa attracted by naturally infected bovine. The trap was bulky and stable but also decomposable and removable. It was tested in an area of Friuli Venezia Giulia (Udine province, NE Italy) during 21 nights in the summer 1994 (29/6-29/9) and allowed to catch 16159 mosquitoes and 218 other Diptera, showing a very good efficiency.

[Infectivity of the entomopathogenic fungus Verticillium lecanii in mice and guinea pigs].

The resistance of plague insects to chemical insecticides as well as the importance of a healthy environment demands an alternative for agricultural plagues. Among others, biological control seems an alternate strategy with fungal entomopathogens playing a relevant role. The hyphomycete Verticillium lecanii is a natural bioregulator of aphids, scales and white-flies that attack different agricultural plantations. Its use in biological control programs must be assessed previously by safety procedures such as its innocuity in mammals and useful animals and plants. The aim of this study was point

The ecological basis of parasite control: ticks and flies.

Tick and fly control programmes have undergone radical review in recent years. Insecticidal control measures are now often seen as a means of reducing target populations to a level sufficiently low for final eradication by biological or ecological techniques, the sterile male method (SIRM) being particularly favoured. As a preliminary, the new range of insecticidal application techniques includes insecticidal tags, bands, blouses, implants and pheromone baits. The final eradication programme could then involve the use of sterile flies or sterile hybrid ticks, for example. Immunization of cattl

Exposure to copper sulfate impairs survival, post-embryonic midgut development and reproduction in Aedes aegypti.

Aedes aegypti is a vector of several global human viruses responsible for high human morbidity and mortality. The method to prevent the transmission of vector-borne viruses is mainly based on the control of the insect vector using insecticides. Among these chemicals, copper sulfate is a compound widely used in agriculture with the potential to be used as an alternative to control these insects. This study evaluated the effects of the exposure of A. aegypti larvae to copper sulfate on survival, midgut morphology, blood-feeding and fecundity. The exposure to CuSO4 decreased the survival of A. ae
