According to cognitive and interpersonal models, safety behaviors in social phobia (e.g., avoiding eye contact, hiding blushing) erroneously induce negative evaluation by interaction partners. Presumably, a bias about the social outcome of safety behaviors causes this negative interaction cycle. Such a bias might be subject to double standard in social phobia (i.e., having more stringent rules for oneself than for others). Female students (n=81) predicted more negative social outcomes for a prominent type of safety behavior, hiding anxiety, than for the opposite behavior, acknowledgment of anx

BACKGROUND: In times of crisis the need to make sense of the situation becomes particularly evident. The perspective of sensemaking captures how individuals seek to clarify and understand what is going on when they encounter ambiguous, unexpected or confusing events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Sensemaking may occur at different but mutually interrelated organisational, interpersonal and individual levels. During the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers (HCWs) faced multifaceted challenges related to their work. This study aimed to explore how HCWs managed their daily work during the early

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the possible reciprocal relationship between victimization experiences and psychological functioning by assessing abuse experiences in childhood, adolescence, and during a 2-month follow-up period.
METHOD: At the beginning of the study (Time 1), abuse histories, trauma and depressive symptoms, and interpersonal functioning were assessed in 551 college women. Subsequent victimization experiences and psychological outcomes were assessed at the follow-up (Time 2).
RESULTS: Path analyses indicated that verbal abuse by the mother and father were predictive of various ps

CONTEXT: Comparisons of osteopathic physicians (ie, DOs) and allopathic physicians (ie, MDs) on interpersonal manner, including empathy and communication style, have been limited by such methodologic issues as self-assessment and a focus on medical students rather than practicing physicians.
OBJECTIVE: To compare perceptions of the interpersonal manner, empathy, and communication style of DOs and MDs and corresponding clinical measures reported by their patients.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study of adults with subacute or chronic low back pain was conducted within the PRECISION Pain Research

Research supports the existence of a dissociative subtype of posttraumatic stress disorder, although studies have not directly compared the perceived impact of dissociative versus nondissociative posttraumatic symptoms on social and occupational functioning. In addition, research is beginning to differentiate between posttraumatic distress associated with normal waking consciousness (NWC) and dissociative experiences of trauma-related altered states of consciousness (TRASC) along multiple phenomenological dimensions. The current study investigated perceived causal relationships between posttra

Visuo-tactile cross-modal congruence effects (CCEs) refer to impaired tactile processing when task-irrelevant visual cues are presented close to the body but in a spatially incongruent location. This interference extends to visual cues appearing far from the body and on distant objects when individuals are reaching toward those objects or observing someone else grasping them. These effects highlight the impact of motor processes on cross-modal integration. However, it remains unclear whether real-time interpersonal interactions, which require continuous prediction of others' actions, influence

Personality functioning difficulties, which include components of self and interpersonal functioning difficulties, provide an indicator of severity when diagnosing personality disorders using the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD). This study used a sample of 271 adults in the United States who completed both self-report surveys and interview measures of psychopathology to identify multimethod symptom associations for personality functioning difficulties, as measured by the Level of Personality Functioning-Brief Form 2.0 (LPFS-BF 2.0). Correlational and regression analyses indic

An anthropological view of culture and somatic experience is presented through elaboration of the notion that illness has a social course. Contemporary anthropology locates culture in local worlds of interpersonal experience. The flow of events and processes in these local worlds influences the waxing and waning of symptoms in a dialetic involving body and society over time. Conversely, symptoms serve as a medium for the negotiation of interpersonal experience, forming a series of illness-related changes in sufferers' local worlds. Thus, somatic experience is both created by and creates cultur

This study investigated the relationship between guilt induction (GI) in parental psychological control (PPC) and children's interpersonal relationships outside the family, as well as the chain mediating effects of parent-child dependence and conscience in this relationship. Data were collected from 1312 Chinese children using five scales to assess the dimensions of PPC: GI; the two dimensions of parent-child attachment, namely mother-child dependence (MCD) and father-child dependence (FCD); conscience; and two dimensions of children's interpersonal relationships outside the family: peer relat…

This study examined the relationship among early attention skills in infants and measures of dyadic interaction during caregiver-infant play, including interpersonal synchrony and turn-taking behavior. Thirty-five caregivers and their one-year-old infants (mean age = 15.34 months) completed a 5-minute free play session and sessions were coded for communication behaviors (eye contact, vocalizations, and gestures), coordinated attention, and infant visual attention states (focused, unfocused, and casual attention). Coordinated attention with a caregiver was not related to caregiver-infant synchr

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is one of the most severe forms of social exclusion and is an important public health issue. It is characterized by processes of weakening of interpersonal bonds. The objective of this study was, therefore, to elucidate how interpersonal relationships change over the life cycle of homeless drug and alcohol users.
METHOD: We used a qualitative methodology. The participants were adults who had a history of homelessness and use of alcohol and other drugs. The interviews were semi structured and used a timeline instrument. All interview were audio recorded, transcribed, a…

Researchers have consistently found a relationship between psychopathy and the use of sexual coercion in samples of males with and without previous sexual arrests (Abbey, Jacques-Tiura, & LeBreton, 2011; Hare, 1991; Hersh & Gray-Little, 1998; Seto & Lalumiere, 2000). Although there is growing recognition that females also engage in sexually coercive behavior, current understanding of female coercion is limited (Bouffard, Bouffard, & Miller, 2015; Cortoni, Hanson, & Coache, 2010; Muñoz, Khan, & Cordwell, 2011). This study examined the relationship between psychopathic traits and sexual coercion

The purpose of this empirical paper is to shed light on the phenomenon of being touched in professional care practice. The study has a qualitative design and is a phenomenological hermeneutical exploration based on the story of a care provider. In her story, she describes how her interactions with a substance abuser touched her. The narrative data stems from dialogue with her colleagues and demonstrates a moral appeal and challenge in practical care. Investigations reveal that being touched is about allowing one's self to be awakened by the suffering of others. Being touched by others' sufferi

Intimate partner violence has been recognized as a major problem on college campuses and is a source of concern for researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and the general population. Most research has focused on the intergenerational transmission of violence and identifying the intrapersonal mechanisms that enable violence in the family of origin to carry over to adult intimate relationships. This study expands the current literature by examining insecure attachment styles and destructive disagreement beliefs as mediators in the relationship between exposure to hostility or aggression in the f

Currently, there is a relative research lacuna in phenomenological research into the lived experience of motor neurone disease. Based on a sociological research project in the UK, involving 42 participants diagnosed with MND, this article explores the potential of a phenomenological sociology for analysing experiences of this drastically life-limiting neurological disorder. Calls have been made for sociological researchers to analyse more fully and deeply the sensory dimension of the lived body, and this article also contributes to this newly developing body of literature. While the social sci

The well-established association between marital interaction and child well-being is sometimes interpreted as evidence that couple behavior "spills over" to affect parenting and child well-being. Nearly all such studies begin after couples become parents, however, raising the possibility that preexisting effects of children on the marriage are creating or inflating this association. To address this possibility, we observed 84 newlywed couples prior to parenthood as they engaged in standardized laboratory-based, problem-solving and social support interactions. We then used actor-partner interde

Two theoretical approaches to interpersonal experiences and behavior are empirically related to each other: Structural Analysis of Social Behavior (SASB) and attachment theory. The focus is on the most important relationships during life-span: relationships with mother and father in childhood, which were measured retrospectively, and romantic relationships in adulthood. 93 outpatients of a psychosomatic clinic took part in the study. Self-report measures were used to assess SASB-dimensions affiliation and autonomy and attachment variables (Intrex short form, Short measure of attachment to pare

This study aims to establish the convergence of the empirically based Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM)- and theory-based interpersonal behavioral approaches to personality, in opioid-dependent patients (n = 110), with the use of the Structured Interview for DSM-IV Personality [Pfohl et al.: Structured Interview for DSM-IV PD. Iowa City, UICM, 1995] and the Interpersonal Checklist-Revised (ICL-R) [DeJong and VandenBrink: ICL-R. St. Oedenrode/NL, Novadic, 1998]. As hypothesized, based on prior research, we found the two approaches to be complementary rather than interchangeable. However, some

A number of clinicians have developed psychodynamic treatments for people with learning disabilities, but there have been few studies assessing the impact of psychodynamic therapy with this population. In particular, there have been no studies in which investigators have asked clients about their experience of psychodynamic treatment. The current study is an attempt to rectify this by exploring people with learning disabilities' experiences of, and satisfaction with, two psychodynamic groups provided by an inner city service. Nine learning-disabled clients, four from a sexual offenders' group

In contrast to suicide in depression, suicide associated with alcoholism and substance dependence may be preceded more often by interpersonal loss and conflict 6 weeks prior to death. We used psychological autopsy methodology in an effort to clarify and extend these findings using a more comprehensive typology of interpersonal stressors. Subjects included 57 suicide victims with diagnoses of alcohol/substance dependence (A/SD; N = 30) and mood/anxiety disorders (M/AD; N = 27). Consistent with previous studies, a substantial majority of the A/SD suicide victims were confronted with interpersona
